SUSTAIN aims at bringing about a high level of environmental protection, social equity and cohesion, and
economic prosperity through the active promotion of sustainable development in coastal areas of the
EU. It will contribuye to the delivery of the renewed EU Sustainable Development Strategy.
SUSTAIN promueve activamente el desarrollo sostenible de las áreas litorales de Europa a través
del aumento de los niveles de protección ambiental, la equidad y cohesión social, y la prosperidad
económica.
OBJECTIVES
OBJETIVOS
To have in place, at the end of three years (2010-2012), a fully
implementable policy tool which will enable the measurement
of sustainability in coastal areas. It will help coastal authorities
and communities from all coastal regions in the EU to deliver
sustainability.
El desarrollo, a lo largo de los tres años de proyecto (2010-2012),
de una herramienta para la evaluación de la sostenibilidad
de áreas litorales, lista para su implementación. Servirá a las
autoridades y comunidades de las regiones costeras de Europa
para la mejora de la sostenibilidad.

• to draw up a definitive list of readily implementable, sustainability indicators for littoral areas,
• to self-assess the identified indicators in order that they can be used on a Pan-European scale,
• to increase the sustainability of partner areas through interchange of experience and transfer of practice during the lifetime of the project, on sustainability issues in the coastal zone.
EXPECTED RESULTS
• A coherent, sustainable policy driven management tool.
• A set of agreed indicators, implementable at local and regional partner authority level.
• Partners with increased sustainability through exchange of experience.
• Contribution to the implementation of the EU Sustainable Development Strategy, especially in littoral areas.

• autoevaluar los indicadores identificados a efectos de su uso a escala pan-Europea,
• aumentar a lo largo del proyecto la sostenibilidad de las áreas participantes a través del intercambio de experiencias y transferencia de buenas prácticas sobre cuestiones relacionadas con el litoral.
Collaboration between 12 partners belonging to different EU
regions and profiles (public local and regional authorities, NGOs
and research institutions) has been established to achieve
the project objectives. SUSTAIN’s activities will entail the
incorporation of objective quality information and targets related
to key aspects of the EU Sustainable Development Strategy,
and will focus its activity in the coastal zone, which are among
Europe’s most fragile areas.

¿CÓMO?
La colaboración entre los 12 socios participantes, procedentes
de diferentes regiones de la UE y con perfiles complementarios
(entidades públicas locales y regionales, ONGs y centros de
investigación), permitirá alcanzar los objetivos del proyecto.
La actividad a desarrollar supondrá la incorporación de datos e
información de calidad y objetivos asociados a los aspectos clave
de la Estrategia Europea de Desarrollo Sostenible, todo ello en
relación a las áreas litorales, una de las zonas más frágiles de la UE.
