Sunday evenings after the 6:00 mass, teens grade 9-12 gather to grow in their
faith. A typical evening includes social time, a fun activity, a short catechesis,
small group discussion, an opportunity for journaling or worship and of course,
prayer. Teens, please join us. Currently, LifeTeen is run by parish volunteers who
are passionate about teaching our teens that having Christ in their lives is the
most important decision they can make. If you are a parent or adult, wanting to
share your Catholic faith with the Teens of St. Monica Parish, please contact Fr.
Martin Rodriguez.

Your Pastor
I like simplicity. I like concepts boiled down to a sentence or two that helps me make the decisions
that are best for me. I really like the two great commandments: “You shall love the Lord, your God,
with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and first
commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. (Matt 22:37-39)”.
Once I know these two things, I can apply them to all sorts of situations without having to read or
look up a lot of information. How should I treat my family, my parishioners, my friends, my
enemies? How often should I be praying, seeking God’s direction, helping the poor, or sacrificing my
life for others? It’s all right there in the two great commandments.
January 22nd of this week marks the 42nd anniversary of the 1973 Roe vs. Wade Supreme Court decision which effectively
legalized abortion in this country. There are all sorts of implications for this decision that would be far to detailed to address in a
short little pastoral letter for the bulletin. It is a complicated decision that has implications for women, men, marriage, human
rights, responsibilities, sexual practice, and, sometimes unfortunately forgotten in all the debate, our children who are not being
given a chance to enter into the world.
The United States Catechism of the Catholic Church, like most Catholic Catechisms, has its third section dedicated to Christian
Morality. It opens with a simple concept, one sentence, which informs the entire rest of the Catechism. In fact, you could only
read that one sentence and have a pretty good understanding of how to make all Christian moral decisions for the rest of your
life. It says this: “The most basic principle of the Christian moral life is the awareness that every person bears the dignity of
being made in the image of God (USCCB, 310)”. As we reflect and pray this week, pray in particular for an end to abortion. It is
important that we return to see all human life as valuable and to be treated with dignity and respect. Let’s begin by respecting
life inside the womb in in the hopes with we will begin to see the dignity of human life outside of it.

Me gusta la simplicidad. Me gustan los conceptos que se resumen en una frase o dos que me ayuda
a tomar las decisiones que son los mejores para mí. Me gustan mucho los dos grandes
mandamientos: "Amarás al señor, tu Dios, con todo tu corazón, con toda tu alma y con toda tu
mente. Este es el mayor y primer mandamiento. El segundo es semejante: Amarás a tu prójimo
como a ti mismo. (Mat 22:37-39) ". Una vez que se estas dos cosas, puedo aplicarlas a todo tipo de
situaciones sin tener que leer o ver una gran cantidad de información. ¿Cómo debo tratar a mi
familia, mis feligreses, mis amigos, mis enemigos? ¿Con qué frecuencia debo orar, buscando la
dirección de Dios, ayudar a los pobres o sacrificar mi vida por otros? Todo está allí, en los dos
grandes mandamientos.

Turn to the Lord in 2015
The start of a New Year gives us the feeling of a fresh
start, a new beginning, and new opportunities.
Although there is nothing in the Bible about New Year’s
resolutions, many good stewards take advantage of this
time of year to become closer to the Lord. They may
re-commit themselves to pray more, to read the Bible,
or to attend Mass more regularly. If you are looking for
some ideas for your New Year’s resolutions, here are a
few to get you started: Practice gratitude – Cultivating
a grateful heart is the hallmark of a Christian steward.
Every day, express thankfulness to the Lord and to
others. Encounter the Lord each day – Find time to be
with the Lord each day, whether it be for an hour or ten
minutes. Our encounters will keep our eyes and ears
open to the presence of Christ in our midst. Give more
– Good stewards realize that everything they have is
entrusted to them as a gift to be shared. Make a
difference in your parish community – Your parish
community can use your talents. Offering your talents
to your faith community is one of the most effective ways to feel useful and connected to others. Get
healthy – Be a good steward of your body with a good
diet and exercise habits. Turn to the Lord – Ask the Lord
for guidance, strength, and perseverance in achieving
your resolutions. If God is at the center of our New
Year’s resolutions, they have a better chance for
success.

RESPECT LIFE
ABOUT THE MINISTRY
Our committee focuses on educating the St. Monica community
about respect for life from conception to natural death
especially in those situations where life is actually threatened
like abortion, euthanasia, stem cell research, and contraception.
(Yes, some contraceptive measures are lethal for the fertilized
egg!)
SPIRITUAL GIFTS REQUIRED: A spiritual awareness of what the
popes have called “The Culture of Death” that we live in and a
desire to love and protect the lives of all people.
SKILLS REQUIRED: Creativity, Organization, Teaching
TIME COMMITMENT: one 2-hour meeting a month and
participation in other events throughout the year.

SAM Recovery Mass
The Annual Recovery Mass sponsored by Substance
Addiction Ministry of the Pro-Life and Family Life Office will

K of C Men’s Retreat Weekend
Planning for the 2015 Honduran mission trip has begun, and
we would love for you to join us on the trip! If you’re
interested in going on this annual trip, you must attend one
information session. Info sessions are all on Sundays,
February 1, February 22, and March 8. All meetings
are 2:30pm. Watch the bulletin for the location yet to be
determined.
In the Name of the Father is the theme for The 4th
Annual Men's Retreat sponsored by the St. Monica
Knights of Columbus, beginning on Friday evening
March 6 to Sunday morning March 8 at St Meinrad
Archabbey in southern Indiana. Please join us for
prayer, conversation, praise and fellowship. There will
an opportunity to pray with the monks of St. Meinrad
Archabbey and to enjoy the beauty of St Meinrad
countryside. Fr Todd will be joining us this year for
spiritual direction. The cost of the weekend is $150 for

God’s Plan For Your Marriage
Beggar's for the Poor Ministry
On February 6 Ed Mitchell & Sharon Thompson, both
licensed Marriage & Family Therapists, will present an
evening called “God’s Plan for Your Marriage.” This evening
starts with a wine and cheese gathering at 6:30 pm:
presentation follows 7:00-9:00 pm. Register online or in the

St. Monica's Beggars for the Poor ministry will be
serving again on Saturday, February 7. We will be
collecting warm men's clothing in the Narthex on the
weeks preceding our service. We could use a few

Almost every week someone new comes to St. Monica
seeking faith through the RCIA process. These seekers are
of different ages and nationalities, but they are all attracted
because of the faith of the parishioners they have met in
their neighborhoods and workplaces. We welcome these
curious persons all year round. We need Sponsors,
Confirmations Sponsors, or Godparents who can walk with
these individuals and their families. Will you be an RCIA

Sunday Evenings: “Letters of Paul—The Writing and Teaching of the Missionary Apostle.” Father Todd,
Fr. Martin, Mike Gootee, Tony Stephanus, Natalie Hoefer and the Book Club will present different sessions.
Please join us in exploring and reflecting on the writing and teaching of the missionary apostle Paul during
the upcoming Lenten season. The series will last six weeks. The Sunday Scripture Series begins February
8following the 6:00pm Mass (approximately 7:10pm) in the St. Augustine Room and concludes March

Friday Mornings: “Matthew: the King and His Kingdom” The King and His Kingdom shows how Jesus builds

El comienzo del Año Nuevo nos da un sentimiento de un
empezar de nuevo, y nuevas oportunidades. Aunque no hay
nada en la Biblia acerca de las resoluciones de Año Nuevos,
muchos administradores toman ventaja en este tiempo del
año para acercarse más al Señor regularmente. Si está
buscando nuevas ideas para sus resoluciones de Año Nuevo,
aquí están algunas para empezar: Práctica de gratitud –
Cultivando un corazón agradecido es el sello de un administrador Cristiano. Cada día, exprese gratitud al Señor y a los
demás. Encontrándose con el Señor cada día – encontrando
tiempo para estar con el Señor cada día, ya sea por una hora
o diez minutos. Nuestros encuentros mantendrán nuestros
ojos y oídos abiertos a la presencia de Cristo entre nosotros.
Dar más – los buenos administradores se dan cuenta que
todo lo que tienen se les ha encomendado como un don para
ser compartido. Haga una diferencia en su comunidad
parroquial – su comunidad parroquial puede utilizar sus
talentos. Ofreciendo sus talentos a su comunidad de fe es
una de las formas más efectivas de sentirse útil y conectado
a los demás. Recupere la salud – sea un buen administrador
de su cuerpo con buenos hábitos de dieta y ejercicio.
Regrese al señor – pida al Señor guía, fuerza y perseverancia
para lograr sus propósitos. Si Dios está en el centro de sus
resoluciones de Año Nuevo, tiene una mejor oportunidad de
lograr el éxito.

Nuestro compromiso se enfoca en educar a la comunidad de
Santa Mónica acerca del respeto a la vida desde el momento a
la concepción hasta la muerte natural especialmente en las
situaciones donde la vida es una amenaza como el aborto,
eutanasia, investigación de células madres, y anticonceptivos.

Viaje a Nuestra Parroquia Hermana 2015
La planeación para la misión a Honduras 2015 ha
empezado, ¡y nos gustaría que viniera a este viaje! Si
está interesado en ir al viaje anual, tiene que asistir a
una de las reuniones de información. Las reuniones de
información son los domingos, 1 de febrero, 22 de
febrero, y 8 de marzo. Todas las reuniones son a las

RICA
Casi cada semana alguien nuevo viene a Santa Mónica
buscando la fe a través del proceso de RICA. Estas personas
son de diferentes edades y nacionalidades, aunque ellos son
atraídos por la fe de los feligreses que conocen en sus
vecindarios o lugares de trabajo. Damos la bienvenida a estas
personas curiosas durante todo el año. Necesitamos

Misa
No tiene que esperar el domingo para asitir a la
Santa Misa. Venga de lunes a jueves a las 5:30. Seguido
de la Adoración al Santísimo hasta las 9:00 pm.
Bienvenida a los Inmigrantes en St. Mónica
¿Intentado obtener respuestas información de cómo
encontrar recursos y servicios acerca de empleos, asistencia
con sus utilidades, consejo legal, ESL, acceso a cuidado de
salud, vivienda y otros servicios y programas? La Iglesia Santa
Mónica tiene una sucursal del Centro de Bienvenida al
Inmigrante abierto cada domingo de 2 p.m. a 5 p.m.
Talleres de Formación Contínua
Santa Monica le invita a los talleres de formación
continua. Estos talleres le dan la oportunidad de crecer en su
fe bajo la luz de las enseñanzas Católicas. Los talleres se
realizan cada 3er domingo de cada mes de 2-4 PM en el salón
de San Agustín.
La Escuela de Sta. Mónica
Cada año el Derecho a la Vida de Indianápolis patrocina un concurso
anual para los estudiantes del grado 7-12. Estamos orgullosos de que el
ganador del concurso 2014 es un estudiante de Santa Mónica, Alex
Taylor y tenemos el placer de presentarles el escrito ganador:
En mi clase de Artes del lenguaje, leímos la novela ‘Es una Historia
Divertida’ por Ned Vizzini acerca de un adolescente problemático,
Craig. En un momento Craig dice, "eventualmente un bebé nacerá y
los doctores al mirarlo enseguida se preguntarán si ha preparado para
lidiar con el mundo. Dice que los médicos decidirán si no parece feliz y
medicado y crearán otro consumidor. Al igual que los bebés no
necesitan medicamentos para actuar de cierta manera, ni necesitan ser
abortados porque ellos no "encajan".
Los bebés no nacidos con discapacidades pueden ser protegidos
dejando saber a las personas que no existe tal cosa como un niño
"imperfecto". En la clase de religión, vi un video de Nick Vujicic nació
sin brazos ni piernas y tiene éxito en su trabajo y su vida de casado. De
niño, la sociedad trató de decirle que no era
importante. Es un milagro de vida y prueba de que Dios no hace
basura. También es un orador motivacional y muy divertido. Protege a
otros niños con discapacidades al dejarle a la gente saber que son
importantes y valiosos. No hay ni habrá nadie como él. Podemos
cerciorarnos de que su historia se propagan de boca en boca, sus
videos de YouTube, Facebook y otras redes sociales con su mensaje de
aceptación puede ser escuchado por quienes piensan que su vida no
vale la pena vivir.
Leer acerca de las personas con discapacidad no es suficiente. Para
que la sociedad valore a las personas con discapacidad es importante
“vivir en sus zapatos”. En la escuela Santa Mónica cada año en la clase
del octavo grado tenemos una semana de concientización acerca de la
discapacidad con la Fundación Maley Joseph. A los estudiantes se les
"da" una discapacidad o enfermedad y “viven” con ella la semana
escolar. Ellos pueden ser confinados a una silla de ruedas, o tienen un
protector bucal si tienen una enfermedad que afecta el habla. Otros
estudiantes usan muletas, usan anteojeras o usan guantes en las
manos si la enfermedad afecta el uso de sus manos. Siento que este
programa debe utilizarse en todas las escuelas como una forma para
que los jóvenes aprendan lo que es tener una discapacidad y empatizar
con la gente. Si los jóvenes aprenden a valorar la vida, entonces se
pasará de generación en generación. La mejor manera de proteger a
las personas con discapacidad y parar el aborto es que las personas
valoren la vida en todos los niveles.
Como acomodador en la Misa de 10:00 en la Iglesia Santa Mónica, he
podido ver que hay feligreses regulares que se sientan en la primera
fila de mi sección que tienen discapacidades. Cuando los vi por primera
vez pensé que podría ser problemático o vergonzoso si ocurriera algo
inesperado como tratar de subir al altar en medio de la Misa. Pero
después de verlos en la Misa semana tras semana y ver que con alegría
alababan al Señor sin ningún escrúpulo, me di cuenta de que es el
único regalo que nos ofrecen. Simplemente por estar en nuestra
sociedad y el que nos muestren la diversidad y belleza de la vida y toda
la creación, nos están mostrando los únicos dones de Cristo. Debemos
apoyarlos en nuestra sociedad y no permitir leyes ni límite donde nos
relacionamos con ellos en la vida diaria.
Podemos celebrar toda la vida y las diferencias de todo el mundo
aprendiendo a aceptarse mutuamente incondicionalmente a través de
Dios. Podemos apreciar y ampliar nuestra sociedad a través de los
dones únicos de cada miembro. A través de la conciencia sobre
minusvalías podemos movernos más allá de la idea de que alguien es
imperfecto o indigno de la vida. Protegiendo a nuestros miembros más
débiles, protegemos a algo más grande, nuestra propia humanidad.

St. Monica School
Each year Right to Life of Indianapolis sponsors an annual Essay
Contest for area 7-12 grade students. We are proud that the winner
of the 2014 essay contest is St. Monica School 8th-grade student Alex
Taylor and pleased to present you with his winning essay:
In my language arts class, we read the novel It’s Kind of a Funny
Story by Ned Vizzini about a troubled teen, Craig. At one point Craig
says, “Eventually a baby will be born and the doctors will look at it
and wonder right away if it’s unequipped to deal with the world.” He
says the doctors will decide if it doesn’t look happy and medicate it
and create another consumer. Just as babies don’t need to be
medicated to act a certain way, nor do they need to be aborted
because they don’t “fit in”.
Unborn babies with disabilities can be protected by letting people
know there is no such thing as an “imperfect” child. In religion class, I
watched a video about Nick Vujicic who was born with no arms or
legs and is successful in his job and married life. As a child, society
tried to tell him he was not important. He is a living miracle and
proof that God doesn’t make junk. He is also a motivational speaker
and very funny. He protects other children with disabilities by letting
people know that he is important and valuable. There is no one else
like him and there never will be again. We can make sure his story is
spread through word of mouth, his YouTube videos, Facebook, and
other social media so that his message of acceptance can be heard by
those who think his life isn’t worth living.
Reading about people with disabilities is not enough. In order for
society to value those with disabilities it is important to live in their
shoes. At St. Monica School each year the eighth grade class puts on
a disability awareness week with the Joseph Maley Foundation.
Students are “given” a disability or disease and live the school week
with it. They may be confined to a wheel chair, or have a mouth
guard if they have a disease that affects speech. Other students have
crutches, wear blinders, or have gloved hands if their disease affects
the use of their hands. I feel this program should be used in all
schools as a way of young people learning what it’s like to have a
disability and empathize with people. If young people learn to value
life, then it will be past down from generation to generation. The
best way to protect those with disabilities and stop abortion is for
people to value life on all levels.
As an usher at 10:00 mass at St. Monica Church, there are regular
parishioners who sit in the front row of my section that have
disabilities. When I first encountered them I thought it might be
troublesome or embarrassing if something unexpected should
happen such as they tried to go up on the altar in the middle of Mass.
But after watching them in Mass week after week joyfully praise the
Lord with no inhibitions, I realized that this is the unique gift they
offer us. By merely being in our society and showing us the diversity
and beauty of life and all creation they are showing us their unique
gifts of Christ. We must support them in our society and not allow
laws or even sidewalks limit where we interact with them in daily life.
We can celebrate all life and everyone’s differences by learning to
accept each other unconditionally through God. We can appreciate
and expand our society through the unique gifts of every member.
Through disability awareness we can move past the idea that anyone
is imperfect or unworthy of life. By protecting our weakest members,
we are protecting something even greater, our own humanity.
