PARISH OF ST. JOSEPH
08/14/2016
From the desk of Father Philip
In the Catholic Spiritual tradition we constantly examine and moderate the longings
of the heart . This is possible by conforming our desires entirely according to the Lord’s good pleasure. We should not be lovers
of self but earnest doers of His will. When desires inflame and drive us madly on we must consider whether we act for His honor
or for our own advantage. If God is the cause we will be well content with whatever He ordains. Whereas if any self-seeking lurk
in us it will trouble us and will weigh us down. We must learn not to rely too much on preconceived desires that have no reference to the Lord. We must check the tendency to follow every desire that seems good at the outset which may prove undesirable
later.
It is sometimes good to use a little restraint even in good desires and inclinations. Too much eagerness may bring distraction of
mind. Through the lack of discipline one may create scandal for others. It can also cause sudden upsets due to resistance from
others. Sometimes we have to violently resist our sensual appetites. You must pay no attention to what the flesh desires. It should
be subjected to the spirit. Desires should be chastised and forced to remain in subjection. This will bring about great joy and tranquility in our daily lives.
If we fail to acquire this discipline we will not be different from the rest of the world.
Traditionally all Catholics do an examination of conscience daily to screen ourselves and make sure that our life and its inclinations are in tune with the Lord’s will and plans. This will bring about a sense of responsibility for our sense of holy. This will help
us to check the tendency for developing bad habits and undesirable attitudes of the world.
Daily examination of conscience will prepare us to behold the Lord without any fear of His judgement at the end of life. This
good habit will refine our character reminding us to embrace what is pleasing to God at all times. On the psychological level, this
will make us positive thinkers. If our children are trained to do this at a very young age, it will lay the foundation for the nobility
of character. This will enhance their interest in spiritual life and will generate responsible and studious habits at school.
In this age children, and even adults, are exposed to all the enticing programs on the social media. The devil is using that to inject
evil into our minds through pornography and ideas against our faith and traditions. Greed and addictions are fostered by these.
An irresistible urge is seen among the young minds to rush to them. that isolates their minds from any interest in spiritual activities like prayer and meditation. If we encourage the habit of the examination of conscience it will create a balance and improve
positive behavior. These days parents allow all such games and activities on the media to keep the kids busy which results in their
addictive habits. Eventually they become alienated from the parents and find joy in their own world. They are deprived of parental involvement in their lives and begin to defy them and rebel. Many of our children drop out of faith life due to this dysfunction
that develops without our examination and eradication.
God bless you all.

GIVING BACK
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Long ago, a signet ring was an essential part of the
wardrobe of influential people. A letter or document
would be sealed with hot wax, and a signet ring pressed
into the wax would affirm the origin of the document.
In the case of the pope, at least from the thirteenth
century, the ring was used to seal public documents
with hot lead, saving the red wax for private letters.
The public documents were called bullae after the
Latin name for the lead stamp, and we still call
them “papal bulls.”
It is not surprising, therefore, that a signet ring has
long been bestowed as part of the inauguration of a
pope. The ring is called the Pescatorio, or “Ring of the
Fisherman.” It reminds the wearer of his link with
Peter, and his responsibility to continue the apostolic
ministry of “fishing for human beings.” Until 1842 it
actually functioned as a signet ring. Now, each pope
receives a new gold ring at the beginning of his ministry. It goes on the fourth finger of his right hand and
bears some fisherman design, usually St. Peter casting
nets from a boat, as well as the pope’s name in Latin.
A custom that endures for the pope, but not so much
for bishops, is for people being introduced to him to
kiss the Pescatorio as a sign of respect for his teaching
authority. Another enduring custom is for the ring to
be smashed and defaced at the pope’s death, originally
a way of preventing counterfeit deathbed documents.

Mucha ansiedad traerá distracción a nuestra mente.
Algunas veces debemos resistir violentamente nuestros apetitos concupiscentes.
