Friday, September 18th from 1:30pm – 2:55pm is the Sixth Grade Mixer Dance Student Council News Connolly’s Student Council had an informational meeting on Wednesday, August 12th. Students interested in applying for STUCO officer positions need to pick up an application as soon as possible. All applications must be received by Tuesday, August 18th with all required components complete. Presidential campaigning occurs from August 20th - 24th. Only eighth graders interested in the presidential officer position are allowed to campaign. If you have any questions, please contact the STUCO advisor - Mrs. Olsen. Student Council is selling SaveAround Coupon Books for $20.00. Please consider purchasing one to support Connolly Middle School. They will be available in the office until August 28th. Calling All Sixth Graders Sixth Graders Music and Friends Sixth Grade Mixer Dance Make sure to attend the very first dance of the school year! WHO: Only sixth graders WHEN: Friday, August 28, 2015 WHERE: Connolly Cafeteria WHAT: Sixth Grade Mixer Dance WHY: Meet new friends at the mixer COST: $3.00 per ticket SNACK PACKS: $5.00 Snack Bar items are available. The dance is from 1:30 until 2:55pm sharp. You must have a ride home. NO BUSSES!! You need to have your ID and lanyard to purchase a ticket during lunches that week. You cannot attend the dance if you are listed on office probation or library probation. Make sure all books from fifth grade are returned to our library. Scholastic Book Fair During the week of Parent/Teacher Conferences, September 1st through the 3rd, Connolly will host a Scholastic Book Fair in the school library. The book fair will be open during the evening when conferences are in session as well as before and during school. Please stop by to check out new books, support the school, and the Connolly Library. See you at the Book Fair! Busy on Curriculum Night? Parents, if you missed our Curriculum Night and Title 1 Parent Night on August 11th, please view our Title 1 video. Connolly Middle School National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) Current NJHS members will meet this month to discuss the focus for the school year. Specific meeting times will be announced during lunches. Listen for news! Students in seventh or eighth grades interested in applying for NJHS will be eligible in October after the first quarter grades and GPAs are posted. Look for more information in October, 2015. Sixth graders interested in NJHS will be eligible at the end of the semester in January, 2016. Look for more information at that time. Parents All students must have their parent/guardian sign page 3 of the student discipline handbook and return it to their teacher as soon as possible. If you have not seen a paper copy of this you may find the handbook on the Tempe Elementary Schools website. Parents and Students - Bell Schedule This year, Connolly’s first bell rings at 8:15am, the tardy bell rings at 8:20am and the dismissal bell rings at 3:20pm Monday through Thursday. Friday’s schedule starts the same as the other days, but dismissal time is 1:30pm. Please note that our starting time this year is 30 minutes later than last year. Due to the later start time, students may not be on campus before 7:50am. Tempe Elementary School busses drop off students at 7:50am. Connolly’s cafeteria begins serving breakfast at 7:50am. Connolly teachers are out supervising the students at 7:50am. Please refrain from dropping students off early. We appreciate your help keeping your students and our campus safe. If you have any questions, please contact an administrator or School Resource Officer Baggs. Booster Club The Connolly Booster Club needs your support! Donations are being accepted to fund activities for students and to assist teachers in purchasing supplies. Please contact [email protected] to learn how to donate! You can also attend Booster Club meetings which are held the first Tuesday of each month at 6:00pm in the Connolly Library. The second Booster Club meeting of the year will be held Tuesday, September 1st. Come join us and thank you! Cafeteria Reminder If you were on free and reduced lunches last year, and haven’t turned in your new pink application, you need to do so. Applications expire in September and it takes time for new ones to be processed. Applications can also be done online through the Tempe Elementary School website, http://www.tempeschools.org/ . If you have already received a letter telling you that you have been approved, then you may ignore this reminder. For the months from September through March, it will be published on the first and third Thursdays. With testing and so many other activities in April and May, there will be only one issue in those months. The publishing dates for those months will be determined closer to the time, when testing dates are set. The newsletter will feature various items throughout the year, so stay tuned! PARENT NOTIFICATION OF TEACHER QUALIFICATIONS: As a parent of a student at Tempe Elementary School District No. 3, you have the right to know the professional qualifications of the classroom teachers who instruct your child. Federal law allows you to ask for certain information about your child's classroom teachers. It is our goal to give you this information in a timely manner if you ask for it. Specifically, you have the right to ask for the following information about each of your child's classroom teachers: Whether the Arizona State Board of Education -Certification Unit has licensed or qualified the teacher for the grades and subjects he or she teaches. Whether the Arizona State Board of Education has decided that the teacher can teach in a classroom without being licensed or qualified under state regulations because of special circumstances. The teacher's college major; whether the teacher has any advanced degrees and, if so, the subject of the degrees. Whether any teacher's assistant or similar paraprofessionals provide services to your child and, if they do, their qualifications. If you would like to receive any of this information, please contact the principal of your child's school who will assist you in getting the requested information. Gifted Child Find Tempe Elementary District #3 offers gifted testing in the areas of verbal, quantitative (math), and nonverbal reasoning on a State Board approved test for gifted identification. Referrals for testing of students in kindergarten through eighth grade come from teachers, administrators, parents, and students. If you would like to recommend a student for testing, referral forms can be requested from the school office or the Gifted Education Department. Referral forms can be completed at any time during the school year. Three opportunities to test are provided during the school year, although individual students may only test once per year. The next test session will be held August 31 – September 15 and the referral deadline for this test session is Wednesday, August 19. Additional opportunities to test will be available in January and April. If you have any questions about referring your child for testing, contact our gifted teacher or the Gifted Education Department at 730-7306.
