Welcome to our Chile Update.
It has, unbelievably, been more than 8 years since our last update for press,
educators and trade on Chile’s wine industry. So much has happened in this
time to change both the physical wine map and the styles of wines that Chile
is producing, and there has never been a more exciting time for a review than
now.
We are delighted that Peter Richards MW has agreed to present this seminar.
His talk and the tasting afterwards will bring you up to speed on new wine
regions and classifications, the development of Chile’s Sustainability code and
the innovations in both vineyard and winery that together make Chile one of
the most dynamic wine countries today.

An Old New-World Wine Country
•
Wine has been made in Chile since the mid 16th century
•
Vines were brought by the Spanish ‘Conquistadors’
•
The ‘classic’ vine varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot,
Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc were brought from France in the
middle of 19th century
•
Carmenere arrived from Bordeaux in mid-19th century (before
phylloxera) but was not properly identified until 1994
•
Although best known for its red wines, mainly Cabernet Sauvignon,
Merlot and Carmenere, some of Chile’s most exciting wines are now
from Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Noir, and
Syrah/Shiraz
Chile’s Unique Geography
Chile’s geographic barriers - the Atacama Desert to the north, the Andes
Mountains to the east, the Patagonian ice fields to the south, and the
Pacific Ocean to the west - make Chile a veritable agricultural island.
Together they help maintain healthy conditions and protect vineyards
against pests and disease. And with a geography as diverse as Chile’s,
you can be sure that the climate will have terrific variation
