Dear Friends,
“EMBRACING THE JOY OF LOVE”
A Pastoral Letter on
Marriage and Family by Pope Francis
Peace and all Good!
It is reported that when Pope Saint John XXIII was
asked: “What should we be doing when Jesus comes
again?” he replied, “Look busy!” While Good Pope John
was always full of humorous anecdotes, we should not
miss the importance of the pope’s message. Perhaps
Pope John had in mind today’s parable about the good
and faithful servant versus the foolish one. Jesus is telling us to be attentive and ever watchful of the Lord’s return. When the Lord comes, we do not want to be
caught idle –that is, not living a faith-filled life. Christian
procrastinator groups, if they ever get started, will be in
big trouble. Let us make no mistake. Much has been
given to us. And much will be required. We are to break
open the mystery of God’s love witnessed in the prudent
servant “found busy” as Pope Saint John the XXIII would
say. There is no time to waste. Let’s get busy.
The month of August is filled with many beautiful feast
days including our patronal feast of St. Louis the King to
be celebrated on August 26th. In particular, I would like
to highlight the Feast of St. Clare of Assisi which we will
celebrate this Thursday, August 11th. On Palm Sunday
night, March 28, 1212, Clare escaped her father’s house
to whisk her way down the Assisi hills to the Portiuncula
down in the valley below the city where St. Francis received her into her new way of life—a life of prayer and
poverty in the hidden confines of the cloister. Clare was a
tenacious woman who wanted to live the holy gospel as
purely as possible. Through the centuries, the Poor Clare
Sisters have kept the spirit of St. Francis and St. Clare
alive! Please see the back cover of today’s bulletin for an
invitation to celebrate a Solemn Mass on August 11th at
6:30 p.m. in the Mission Church. A reception will be held
on the front portico of the Mission.
In closing, I wish to thank everyone who worked so
hard to make our production of “Late Nite Catechism”
such a success! There were over 400 people in the audience! It was fun to laugh out loud! We had a little relief
from all the cares of our world right now and were able
to raise some much needed funds for the operation of
our beloved parish. God bless you all!
Love,
Chapter 7: Toward a Better Education of
Children
Children who are lovingly corrected feel cared for; they
perceive that they are individuals whose potential is recognized. (#267)
The family is the first school of human values, where
we learn the wise use of freedom. (#274)
Every day the family has to come up with new ways of
appreciating and acknowledging its members. (#288)

$1,248.04, many parishioners responded to the needs of
the Parish in the final week so that the overall loss was
minimized. If you were one of them, THANK YOU! Your
generosity is always recognized and appreciated! There
were also a lot of new online and EFT signups this week more parishioners saving the hassle of weekly envelopes,
providing the Parish with consistent income and maybe
even earning rewards on their credit cards! If you'd like
to join the EFT/Online "club", contact Elizabeth Rose at
760-547-0711. Thanks and have a great week!

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT
In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus concludes his teaching
about those who are “faithful and prudent stewards” with
that classic stewardship teaching: “Much will be required of
the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more.” Christian
stewards recognize that God is the ultimate source of their
gifts, talents, resources and aptitudes, and that God wants
them to use these varied gifts in his service. This week
might be a good time to reflect on our God-given gifts. Are
we using those gifts to serve the Lord? If Christ came back
to us unexpectedly tomorrow would we be able to give a
full accounting of how we have exercised stewardship over
these gifts?
FR. ARTURO’S FAREWELL! A BIG THANK YOU!
Last Sunday’s Mass and Farewell Reception for Fr. Arturo
were absolutely amazing! Much appreciation to the parish
staff, volunteers from different ministries and the Hispanic
Committee for this labor of love to thank Father for his
ministry among us! Everyone had a delightful afternoon
with great people, great food and great entertainment!
This past week, Fr. Arturo packed his room and office and is
now in his new parish. If you would like to keep in touch,

A NEW PARISH MINISTRY IS BORN!
“THE PARISH COMMUNITY LIFE COMMITTEE”
Hospitality and a welcoming atmosphere should be the
hallmark of every parish. Visitors tell us that we are a
very welcoming community of faith. The Pastoral Council and Stewardship Committee have initiated a new
committee to help foster a greater awareness of hospitality by establishing a Parish Community Life Committee
whose function is to enhance our parish life by welcoming newcomers and visitors and by fostering opportunities to celebrate our life together through receptions,
parties and other social activities. If you are a people
person and like to plan social events, then this new venture is for you! If you would like to learn more about this
new venture, please call Claudia LaBarge at 760-4585937 and/or Marta Werner at 760-724-7393. All are invited to a special informational meeting on Wed., August
10, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Dining Rm. Help us
welcome, connect and foster friendships in our Mission
Parish!

QUERIDOS AMIGOS,
¡Paz y Bien!
No hagamos ningún
error. Mucho se nos ha dado. Y mucho se nos pedirá. Hemos
Papa San Juan XXIII.
San Francisco y Santa Clara vivo!

DID YOU KNOW...
...that 1 in every 17 persons in our country lives
with a serious mental illness?
...that, each year, one in 18% of adults deal with
mental disorder?
...that mental and behavioral disorders account
for nearly 14% of the leading diseases in our
country—3% less than cardiovascular disease?
...that mental disorders include depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, eating disorders, substance abuse, bipolar disorder and more?
...that many of these people do not seek help or
treatment because they think they are “the
only ones” with such a problem?
The stigma attached to mental illness keeps
people from getting the help they need. If you
or someone you love is suffering with mental
health challenges, you may not know where to
turn for help.
You are NOT alone!

Feast of St. Clare of Assisi
Thursday, August 11th

A reception will be held on the
front portico of the Mission
Born: July 16, 1194, Assisi, Italy
Died: August 11, 1253, Assisi, Italy
Full name: Chiara Offreduccio
Major shrine: Basilica di Santa Chiara
Organization founded: Poor Clares
Clare of Assisi possessed an indomitable resolve to
lead the simple, literal gospel life as Francis taught
her. She was courageous in her resistance to the
ever-present pressure to dilute the ideal. She had a
passion for poverty and humility and lived an ardent
life of prayer and a generous concern for her sisters.
On her deathbed on August 11, 1253, she was heard
praying: “Go forth in peace, for you have followed
the good road. Go forth without fear, for he who
created you has made you holy, has always protected you, and loves you as a mother. Blessed be you,
my God, for having created me.”
