GOD’S MERCY
Christ makes this revelation: “If anyone comes to me without hating
wife and children, even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.” Saint
Paul demonstrates the depths of his discipleship in sending back to
Philemon the beloved Onesimus whom Paul cherishes as “my child, my
own heart.” The Lord wants to give us a grace that exceeds even the
love of a parent, a spouse, or a child. The kind of detachment that
Jesus calls for in the Gospel today creates the desire that disposes us
to receive all that God is eager to give us. Since “the earthen shelter
weighs down the mind that has many concerns,” the Lord insists that
we carry our own cross. For that cross separates us from anything that
conforms us to our own inadequate ideas and measures, so that we
can follow Christ faithfully.

St. Rosalia
St. Rosalia, daughter of Sinibald, Lord of Roses and Quisquina, was
a descendant of the great Charlemagne. She was born at Palermo in
Sicily. In her youth, her heart turned
from earthly vanities to God. She left
her home and took up her abode in a
cave, on the walls of which she wrote
these words: "I, Rosalia, daughter of
Sinibald, Lord of Roses and Quisquina,
have taken the resolution to live in this
cave for the love of my
Lord, Jesus Christ." She remained there
entirely hidden from the world. She
practiced great mortifications and lived
in constant communion with God. Afterward she transferred her abode to
Mount Pellegrino, about three miles
from Palermo, in order to triumph entirely over the instincts of flesh and
blood, in sight of her paternal home.
She is said to have appeared after
death and to have revealed that she
spent several years in a little excavation near the grotto. She died alone, in
1160, ending her strange and wonderful life unknown to the world. Her body
was discovered several centuries later,
in 1625, during the pontificate of Pope
Urban VIII. In 1624, a plague beset
Palermo. During this hardship Saint
Rosalia appeared first to a sick woman,
then to a hunter, to whom she indicated
where her remains were to be found.
She ordered him to bring her bones to
Palermo and have them carried in procession through the city. The hunter
climbed the mountain and found her
bones in the cave as described. He did
what she had asked in the apparition.
After her remains were carried around
the city three times, the plague ceased.
After

fielmente a Cristo.

Santa Rosalía, hija de Sinibald,
Señor de las Rosas y Quisquina, era

en Sicilia. En su juventud, su corazón
se apartó de vanidades terrenales a
Dios. Ella salió de su casa y tomó su
residencia en una cueva, en las
paredes de las cuales ella escribió
estas palabras: "Yo, Rosalía, hija de
Sinibald, Señor de Rosas y
Quisquina, he tomado la resolución

Santa
Rosalía
apareció por primera vez a una mujer
enferma, a continuación, a un
cazador, a quien le indicó donde sus
restos se encontraban. Ella le ordenó
recoger a sus huesos a Palermo y
tenerlos llevadas en procesión por la
ciudad. El cazador subió a la
montaña y encontraron sus huesos
en la cueva como se ha descrito. Él
hizo lo que había pedido en la
aparición. Después de que sus restos
fueron llevados por la ciudad tres
veces, la plaga cesó. Después de
esta Santa Rosalía fue venerado
como el santo patrón de Palermo, y
un santuario fue construido en la
cueva donde se encontraron sus

Father in heaven, we thank You for the communion of
saints so that we can draw near to You through the
prayers of St. Rosalia. Through her prayers help us to
remember that our destiny is heaven. As St. Rosalia
forsook all for Your Kingdom, through her prayers may
we love more fully for Your Son our Lord Jesus Christ,
who together with You and the Holy Spirit are one God
forever and ever. Amen.
O God, our Father, You are offended by sin but
pleased by penance. Mercifully look upon Your people
who come to You and grant through the intercession of
St. Rosalia, who turned away from earthly delights to
the joys of contemplation, that we may be delivered
from the consequences of our sins and those of the world
through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
