SPA 102b SPANISH LANGUAGE II
(Tuesday & Thursday at 8h15 – H303)
For the purpose of professional activity, there will be no classes March 12th and 14th.
DESCRIPTION
The course is a continuation of Spanish Language I. It is proficiency-based and
includes an elementary survey of the basic categories of Spanish grammar. The
general objective is Spanish communication. Oral exercises (CD Audio) are
included. Prerequisite: Spanish 100, Spanish 101 or equivalent (in Spanish)
CONTENT
1. ¿Qué has hecho? Hablar de hechos pasados (I). Preguntar por la causa y
justificarse. Aceptar excusas. Hablar de un pasado reciente. Gramática:
Pretérito Perfecto. Participios. Marcadores temporales (II). Pretérito
indefinido (1era persona) de estar, ir. Léxico: expresiones de sorpresa,
decepción y aburrimiento. Accidentes geográficos.
2. Cuéntame qué pasó. Hablar de hechos pasados (II). Expresar una cantidad
indeterminada o inexistente. Interesarse por el estado de alguien. Describir
estados de ánimo. Gramática: Pretérito indefinido de verbos regulares.
Pretérito Indefinido de estar, ir, ver, tener, hacer. Pronombres y adjetivos
indefinidos. Marcadores temporales (II). Léxico: Estados de ánimo.
3. Viajar en avión. Pedir y dar información sobre medios de transporte. Hacer
comparaciones. Expresar la propiedad. Gramática: Adjetivos demostrativos
(II). Pronombres posesivos. Estructuras comparativas. Verbos impersonales:
llover, nevar. Léxico: El clima y el tiempo atmosférico.

4. Antes y ahora.
Hablar de hechos pasados (III). Describir acciones
habituales en el pasado. Expresar la frecuencia con que se hacen las cosas.
Hablar de la salud y de los estados físicos. Gramática: Pretérito imperfecto
de los verbos regulares. Pretéritos imperfectos irregulares: ir, ser. Formas
negativas: nunca. Verbo doler. Léxico: Partes del cuerpo. Enfermedades,
estados físicos, remedios.
5. Instrucciones. Expresar obligación en forma personal e impersonal.
Expresar posibilidad / prohibición. Expresar condiciones reales. Gramática:
Hay que + infinitivo. Uso de se. Pronombres personales de Complemento
indirecto. Oraciones condicionales. Léxico: Deportes e instalaciones
deportivas.
6. Acontecimientos del pasado. Hablar de hechos pasados (IV). Acciones
interrumpidas por otra acción. Narrar acontecimientos. Contar la vida de una
persona. Gramática: Revisión de los tiempos del pasado. Pretérito indefinido
de leer, morir y nacer. Estructuras comparativas y superlativas. Léxico:
Sucesos y acontecimientos históricos.

COURSE POLICIES
1) Supplemental Exams: None. There will be no make-up or in-class work for
missed exams
2) Absenteeism: Students who miss more than three classes will not be allowed
to write the final exam(s). Attend class regularly. The study of a foreign
language is a communicative process; you must interact with your professor and
your classmates in order to make progress.
3) Assignments are due at the beginning of class on the dates indicated. Any
student who does not write a midterm or who fails to submit a required paper
will receive a zero. Late assignments will not be accepted.
4) Electronic submissions of work (e.g., email) will not be accepted.
5) Please turn all cell phones or technological gadgets that might cause a
disruption during class OFF.
6) I expect utmost academic integrity. That means that any type of academic
dishonesty (e.g., cheating, plagiarism, not turning in your work) will not be
tolerated. Plagiarism is defined by the Policy on Academic Integrity at Bishop’s
University
7) Have fun with the language and take risks as you try to speak it. Do not wait
until you have the perfect answer to participate in class. Let your professor and
your fellow students assist you and make learning a joint and cooperative
experience. You will learn more quickly and more thoroughly when you are fully
engaged in the learning process.
