Dayco has been a pioneer in Original Equipment automatic belt tensioners since obtaining their first
tensioner patent in 1976; progressing through the development of the revolutionary serpentine belt drive
system for the 1979 Ford Mustang and ultimately, the development and patenting of the first
production “flat spring” automotive tensioner.
In 1997, Dayco scored another first by introducing the Dayco Tensioner to the Aftermarket. In the
process, Dayco generated a completely new and profitable avenue of sales for automotive part
suppliers. The Dayco commitment to the Aftermarket then…as it continues to be…was “to
continually set the industry standard for tensioner quality and VIO tensioner replacement coverage.”

Tensioners... What Do They Do?
Serpentine drive systems utilize a single long belt which “snakes” around most, if not all, of the
Automatic Belt Tensioner utilizes a “flat spring” technology,
accessory pulleys. The Dayco
which allows for an increase in torque to be transmitted to the belt when needed. In a conventional
V-belt system, this torque is limited to static tension due to the belt adjustments having locked centers.
If, when installed, the belt was tensioned insufficiently, or if the belt has stretched or worn through use,
it will slip when placed under a load resulting in poor accessory performance and premature belt
failure. If the belt was over tensioned when installed, there is risk of premature accessory bearing
failure. A spring-loaded automatic tensioner compensates for the belt’s stretch and wear by
maintaining a constant tension on the belt throughout the life of the belt.

Replace A Tensioner When:
Serpentine belt drives consist of a single belt, which powers a variety of accessory drives. To maintain
the proper tension and to prevent the belt from slipping or flipping off the pulleys, an automatic (spring
loaded) tensioner is incorporated into the drive system.
Tensioner Noise
Listen closely to the tensioner when the engine is
running. When the engine is shut off and the belt is
removed...check the pulley for free rotation. If you
hear noise or feel resistance to turning this could be
the sound of impending bearing failure.
Loss Of Tension
Tension loss is evidenced by belt squeal or an
accessory that has stopped working completely.
Metal To Metal Contact
If there is any metal to metal contact between arm
and spring case, this is a sign of spring bushing or
pivot bushing wear.

Belt Tracking Improperly
If the belt is tracking off center, at or off the edge of
the pulley, or if the belt flips off the tensioner, this is
a sign of bushing wear resulting in tensioner
misalignment.
Sticking Or Notchy Movement
When removing or replacing the belt, check the
tensioner torque by applying torque to move the
tensioner arm from stop to stop. The arm should
move smoothly and without hesitant movement.
Broken Or Cracked Tensioner “Stops”
When removing or replacing the belt, check the
tensioner “stops” located on both the tensioner arm
and of spring case to see if they are broken.
