Dear Parents,
Today, we are bringing home a “Sight Word List” in your child’s STAR
book. Each list will have words that we have learned or will be learning
together in class, and need to be mastered by the end of Kindergarten. We call them sight
words, star words, or even popcorn words because they pop up or star in almost all the books
we read.
We will test over these sight word lists each Friday. Make sure the word list stays in
their STAR book every day. Every child is not on the same list but will be tested over all the
words. They will be working at their own pace using their own list. Your child will not get a
new sight word list until they are able to read every word and phrase without hesitation or
sounding out. They should be able to read it within 3-5 seconds. It is also a good idea to go
back over old words at home, so they do not forget!
The lists will have:

Fry Sight Words 1-100 (these words should be mastered by the end of kindergarten)
Color and Number Words
Fry Phrases
Will have more challenging words once Kindergarten preprimer and primer words have
been memorized and passed
This may seem like a lot of words; however, the more words your child knows the more
fluently he/she will be able to read. Please practice a few minutes each night. Please do not
wait until they get behind to learn the sight word lists- it is tough to catch up. By fall in first
grade, they will need to be able to read 140 sight words without hesitation.
Your child will be tested using the Star Early Literacy computer assessment four times
this year as well as over their sight words the next three quarters for report cards. We also
assess their reading progression using running records. They will continue to read books on
their reading level and get one on one help in guided reading groups and intervention groups.

Ideas for practicing sight words
Learning Rings- Use your child's list of sight words to make flashcards. Print each word on a small,
square piece of card stock . As your child masters a word, punch a hole in the card and place it on a large ring
or key chain. Even after your child has mastered all the words the ring can be used for review.
Beanbag Toss- Write your child's sight words or several Dolch words on sturdy paper. Place the words
on the floor face up. Take turns tossing a beanbag onto a word and saying the word out loud. Identifying the
word quickly and correctly earns a point. The first person to 25 points wins.
Dominoes- Write your child's sight words on index cards. Deal the cards out equally to all players. Take
turns placing the cards down, making sure the last letter of the word matches the first letter of another word.
This is similar to a game of dominoes.
Swat The Word- Print your child's sight words on sturdy paper and lay them out on a table or the
floor. Give your child a flyswatter. Have her "swat" the words as you call them out. Allow three seconds to find
the word. If the word is found, a point is given.
Go Fish- Print two copies of each sight word on card stock or write the words on index cards. Use the
cards to play "Go Fish" with your child.
Bingo- Use your child's list of sight words to print customized Bingo cards. Play Bingo by calling out a
sight word. Give your child a crayon to color the words as they are called. As an alternative, use pennies for
markers. Words are marked only if they are identified without assistance. Once Bingo is called reward your
child with a small prize. Dollar store trinkets or candy make good prizes.

Aprendizaje anillos- Uso su hijo lista de palabras para hacer tarjetas. Imprimir cada palabra en una
pieza pequeña, cuadrada de tarjeta Acción . Como su hijo domina una palabra, perfore un agujero en la tarjeta y
colóquela sobre un anillo grande o llavero. Incluso después de que su hijo ha dominado todas las palabras el
anillo puede ser utilizado para la revisión.
Beanbag Toss- Palabras de escritura de su hijo, o varias palabras Dolch en papel resistente. Coloque las
