ROLE OF SPONSOR
The Code of Canon Law states “the person to be confirmed is to have a sponsor. The
sponsor’s function is to take care that the person confirmed behaves as a true witness of
Christ and faithfully fulfills the duties inherent in this sacrament.” Canon #892





A sponsor is a role model, a guide and encourager.
They must be living their Catholic faith.
They must be fully initiated (received Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation)
If married, it must be a valid Catholic marriage.
They must live a life of active faith in the Catholic Church. {They must attend
Mass each Sunday as both the Ten Commandments and the precepts of the
Church teach. A sponsor must be one who is in full communion with the Roman
Catholic Church and able to receive communion.}
Parents are not allowed to sponsor their own children. Sponsors must be over the age
of 16 and should be significantly more mature than the person being confirmed.
Candidates may have only one sponsor present them to the Bishop at Confirmation.
Sponsors are asked to:
 Pray with and for the candidate.
 Share what Confirmation means to them with candidate.
 Be an active member of their local parish.
 Share conversation and encouragement.
 Attend the Rehearsal and Confirmation Liturgy.
 By signing the Sponsor Covenant, the sponsor is saying they fulfill the
requirements above.

The Code of Canon Law (Church Law) specifies the requirements for serving as a
sponsor at Confirmation (Canon 893) are the same as those for godparents at Baptism
(Canon 874): You may not be the parent of the person being confirmed; you must be at
least 16 years old; you must be fully initiated (Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist); if
married, be in valid Catholic marriage; and live a life of active faith in the Catholic
Church.

RESPONSABILIDAD DEL PADRINO
La ley del Código del Canon de la Iglesia Católica dice en el numeral 892: “En la medida de
lo posible, tenga el confirmando un padrino, a quien corresponde procurar que se comporte
como verdadero testigo de Cristo y cumpla fielmente las obligaciones inherentes al
sacramento.”
El padrino es un modelo a seguir, una guía y animador. Por lo tanto, tiene que estar
viviendo su fe católica. Debe estar iniciado completamente (Bautismo, Primera Comunión y
Confirmación) y si es casado, debe estar casado en la Iglesia Católica. Debe asistir a Misa
cada domingo como enseñan los Diez Mandamientos y los preceptos de la Iglesia. El
padrino debe ser UNO en comunión completa con la Iglesia Católica Romana.
Los padres de familia no pueden ser padrinos de sus hijos. En Sta. Elizabeth el padrino
debe ser mucho más maduro que la persona a confirmarse, por lo tanto, alumnos de
secundaria no pueden ser padrinos de sus compañeros o amigos.
Los candidatos deben tener solo un padrino que lo presente al Obispo al momento de la
confirmación.
Los padrinos deben:
 Orar con y por el candidato.
 Compartir el significado del la confirmación con el candidato.
 Ser un miembro activo en su parroquia.
 Compartir pláticas y dar apoyo.
 Estar presente en el ensayo y misa de confirmación.
 Firmar el convenio de padrino de confirmación.

Como padrino de Confirmación, su papel es fomentar la fe de su candidato, ser un “ejemplo” para él
y reflexionar junto con él sobre el significado de la vida como discípulo católico.
El Código de la Ley Canónica (Ley de la Iglesia) especifica los requerimientos para fungir como
Padrino de Confirmación (Ley 893), los cuales son semejantes a los requisitos para el padrino de
bautismo (Ley 874): Usted no puede ser el padre de la persona que será confirmada; usted debe tener
