My dear parishioners,
Thirty years ago tomorrow, October 10, I entered
into the United States Air Force. It was one of the most
important days of my life. At the young age of seventeen,
a recent high school graduate, I left home to serve my
country. All my life up to that point I had dreamed of
serving the United States in the military. My paternal
grandfather had come over from Ireland and joined the
U.S. Navy, serving in the South Pacific during World
War II. My father joined the Air Force as a young man
and I grew up hearing his stories and one of his biggest
regrets in life was when he separated. Filled with enthusiasm and a bit of apprehension, I left for basic training. I
remember getting off the bus at Lackland Air Force Base,
San Antonio, Texas and immediately being yelled at by
the training instructors. We had to button up our jackets
or zip them up. It was a culture shock and even though
we had heard stories, nothing could prepare you for the
intensity of basic training.
My time in the US Air Force enabled me to grow
as a man, develop confidence in my abilities, begin my
college education, travel to different countries and make
incredible friendships. The one aspect of my time for
which I am most grateful was the rediscovery of my
Catholic faith. I was one of those who received confirmation and never went back to church. In high school, I declared myself an atheist and mocked others who believed.
During basic training, we had two options on Sundays,
either stay in the barracks and clean or go to church. I
despised cleaning, so I went to Mass. One week a sergeant came up to me during Mass and ordered me to sing.
I told him I cannot sing and did not want to. He said if I
did not sing, I would be put on report. That could have
caused me to lose time and be held up in my training. I
began to sing, as bad as I was. I actually began to enjoy
it. I then began to really listen to the readings and then
the homilies. I asked for permission to speak to the chaplain and went to confession for the first time in over five
years; that following Sunday, I received Jesus in Holy
Communion again also for the first time in over five
years. It was a joyous moment and my renewed faith
helped me through the difficult times of basic training.
I continued to grow in my faith during my fiveplus years in the Air Force. I became involved in different ministries, I found my vocation to the priesthood
while serving in Germany and I began going to daily
Mass because I did not want to wait until Sunday to receive Jesus. I was helped by some very good Air Force
chaplains who took me under their wing (no pun intended) and helped me to learn more about the greatness of
our Catholic faith and to help me with my discernment.
The only reason I separated from the Air Force was to
study for the priesthood. It was a blessed time for me and
I am forever grateful.

Mis queridos feligreses,
Mañana 10 de octubre serán treinta años que yo me
enlisté en la Fuerza Aérea de Los Estados Unidos. Fue uno de
los días mas importantes de mi vida. A la corta edad de diecisiete años, habiéndome graduado recientemente de la escuela
secundaria, dejé mi hogar para ir a servir a mi país. Toda mi
vida hasta ese día yo había soñado con servir a los Estados
Unidos como militar. Mi abuelo paterno quien vino de Irlanda
se unió a la Marina, sirviendo en Pacifico Sur durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Mi padre se unió a la Fuerza Aérea en
su juventud y yo crecí escuchando sus historias y uno de sus
grandes arrepentimientos fue haber dejado la Fuerza Aérea.
Lleno de entusiasmo y un poco de aprehensión me fui al entrenamiento básico. Recuerdo bajándome del bus en la Base de la
Fuerza Aérea Lackland en San Antonio, Texas e inmediatamente ser gritado por uno de los instructores de entrenamiento.
Deberíamos tener nuestras chaquetas abotonadas o con el zíper
cerrado. Fue un choque cultural y aunque habíamos escuchado
historias, nada nos podía haber preparado para la intensidad
del entrenamiento básico.
Mi tiempo en la Fuerza Aérea de los Estados Unidos
me permitió crecer como hombre, desarrollar confianza en mis
habilidades, comenzar mi educación universitaria, viajar a
diferentes países y hacer amistades increíbles. Un aspecto de
ese tiempo por lo cual estoy muy agradecido fue el redescubrimiento de mi fe Católica. Yo fui uno de esos que después de
recibir mi confirmación no regrese mas a la iglesia. En la escuela secundaria, me declare ateo y me burlaba de aquellos que
creían. Durante el entrenamiento básico teníamos dos opciones
los domingos, quedarnos en el cartel y limpiar o ir a la iglesia.
Yo despreciaba limpiar así que iba a Misa. Una semana un
sargento vino donde mi durante la Misa y me ordeno que cantara. Yo le dije que no podía cantar y que no quería hacerlo. El
me dijo que si no cantaba, me reportaría. Eso me podía causar
perder tiempo y quedarme mas tiempo en entrenamiento básico. Comencé a cantar, tan mal como yo era. En realidad empecé a disfrutarlo. Entonces comencé a prestar atención a las
lecturas y a las homilías. Pedí permiso para hablar con el capellán y me confesé después de no hacerlo en mas de cinco años;
el domingo siguiente recibí a Jesús en la Sagrada Comunión,
otra vez, ya que igualmente no lo había recibido en mas de
cinco años. Fue un momento de mucho gozo y mi fe renovada
me ayudo en los momentos difíciles del entrenamiento básico.
Yo continué creciendo en mi fe durante los cinco
años y un poco mas que estuve en la Fuerza Aérea. Me involucre en diferentes ministerios, encontré mi vocación al sacerdocio mientras servía en Alemania y comencé a ir Misa todos
los días porque no quería esperar hasta el domingo para recibir
a Jesús. Algunos muy buenos capellanes de la Fuerza Aérea
me brindaron su ayuda, teniéndome bajo su cuidado y me ayudaron a aprender mas acerca de la grandeza de nuestra fe Católica y en mi discernimiento. La única razón por la cual dejé la
Fuerza Aérea fue para estudiar para el sacerdocio. Fue un tiempo muy bendecido y estaré agradecido por siempre.

Parish Poland Pilgrimage
Recently Fr. O’Connor announced a parish pilgrimage to
Poland and the Czech Republic, July 2 – 11, 2017. Flyers
with more information are available at the entrances of the
church, in the rectory and on the parish website. Join us as
we walk in the footsteps of some of the great saints of the
last century, St. John Paul, St. Faustina and St. Maxmillian
Kolbe. Mass will be celebrated each day as we deepen our
faith. Join us as we travel to the land of the Divine Mercy
apparitions.

Bridge Women’s Support Center is a pregnancy resource
center with locations in Flushing and Astoria. They provide pro-life counseling to abortion-minded women. They
also give material assistance (such as clothing, strollers,
car seats, and cribs) to thousands of mothers and their
children each year.

What better way to serve the church, and our Lord Jesus
Christ, than through the power of music? Register your child
to join our music ministry for FREE. Each practice will take
place in the new music room on Wednesdays at 5pm, after the
3:15 session of Religious Education Classes, and we will be
singing for Family Mass every month at 10am. The new music room is now located near the lower church, downstairs

Centro de Apoyo para Mujeres (Bridge Women’s
Support Center) Antiguamente se llamaba
The Bridge to Life
Es un centro de recursos para mujeres embarazadas con
centros en Flushing y Astoria. Ellos proveen consejería
pro-vida a mujeres que están pensando hacerse un aborto.
Ellos también dan ayuda material como (ropa, coches,
sillas para el carro y cunas para los bebes) a miles de mujeres y a sus niños cada año.
Ellos están patrocinando una campaña de biberones para
recaudar fondos. Los biberones que recogieron en las
puertas de la iglesia al terminar las Misas el domingo pasado, deben ser devueltos con sus donaciones el fin de
semana próximo, octubre 15 y 16.
