Demanding multimedia functions like playing
DVD-quality content are easy on mobile devices
powered by the new Samsung S3C6400 mobile
processor. Its ARM1176 core, 64-bit AXI bus
and multimedia hardware accelerators support
state-of-the art memory options and a rich set of
peripheral interfaces. All this gives the S3C6400
the horsepower needed for multi-function, nextgeneration smart phones as well as portable
navigation devices and portable media players.
Several factors contribute to the new processor’s
superior multimedia capabilities. It has a MultiFormat Codec (MFC) that can handle multiple
forms of video – MPEG-4, H.264, VC-1 – at 30
frames per second, including real-time video
conferencing. Two memory ports eliminate any
data bottleneck, while the processor includes
interfaces to the latest, most advanced memory
types. In addition, the S3C6400 can achieve
speeds up to 533MHz while offering very low
power consumption to extend battery life.
Samsung’s memory leadership is an advantage
in giving the processor broad, advanced memory
options. Among supported DRAM are mobile
DDR, mobile SDRAM or Samsung’s new dual-port
OneDRAM™, which allows higher performance
with lower BoM costs. Meanwhile, the flash/ROM
port can handle a wide variety of memory including MCL and SLC flash, NOR, OneNAND™, and
the new moviNAND™. Integrated 4-bit ECC
gives customers the advantages of MLC without
requiring an external MLC NAND controller,
which increases the BoM cost.

The Samsung S3C6400 is one of the highestperformance mobile processors available today.
Along with its speed, multimedia capabilities and
rich memory support, it offers the industry’s
broadest set of peripheral interfaces, including
10-bit ADC for touch-screen applications. All the
major high-level operating systems are accommodated. For extremely small device designs,
the Samsung S3C6400 is available in a Packageon-Package configuration – for example, an
integrated solution combining the processor with
256MB OneNAND and 128MB mobile DDR that
measures just 12x12mm. The sophisticated new
S3C6400 is geared to support performancehungry tasks like running Office applications, full
web browsing or the most advanced multimedia.
