Special Second Collection April 25 and 26
Catholic Home Missions
The Catholic Home
Missions Appeal will
take place this weekend.
One way that this Appeal
works to support mission
dioceses here at home is
by supporting seminarian formation in poor dioceses.
The blessing of seminarians places a financial burden on
these dioceses, which educate each seminarian at a cost
of $35,000–$40,000 per year. Your support is needed for
these young men, so that they can return to serve their
parishes. Please strengthen the Church at home by
making a generous gift to this week’s Appeal.
Music Collection
Next Weekend
Next weekend, May 2nd and 3rd, we will take up the
Cathedral music department collection. We rely on
parishioners and visitors to reflect on the importance of
music in worship, the quality of music offered here at the
Cathedral, and your responsibility as stewards to
support this excellent program.
The second collection for music helps support our
renowned music program by helping to cover the costs
of salaries, organ and piano maintenance, sheet music,
choir robes, supplies, and so much more. By participating
in this important collection, you become an integral part
of our music program and help us continue the high
quality of musical leadership at the cathedral. Thank you
very much for your support!
Fourth Sunday of Easter—April 26, 2015
Mensaje del Obispo Bill
Bishop Bill’s Corner
This Sunday is known as Good Shepherd
Sunday. The Gospel today is the obvious reason for the
above title. The Gospel is about the Good Shepherd. We
city dwellers are not too familiar with sheep. We know
that wool comes from their coats and that they recently
have been used to naturally clear the high grass from
vineyards and large backyards. They just love to graze
on this grass.
The Good Shepherd in John’s Gospel knows
them well. He is with them 24/7 guarding and caring for
them. He understands that sheep like to be together, to
be part of a flock. If they get separated from the flock
they panic in a sheep’s special way. They do not run
from the wolf as would many other animals. Instead,
they just freeze, do not move. They are paralyzed with
fear. The wolf can practically come up to them and
decide which part of the lamb he would like for lunch or
dinner. The sheep is doomed.
That is why the Good Shepherd quickly looks for
his lost sheep. He needs to find the animal as soon as
possible or there is a good chance the sheep will lose its
life. And the shepherd risks his life to save the lost
sheep.
One of the oldest symbols of the Christian
Community is the Good Shepherd with the lost sheep on
his shoulders. It did not take long to see the Bishops and
later the priests as being called to be good shepherds:
searching out the lost sheep and caring for the flock.
Good Shepherds are needed for the Church to
carry out the mission of Jesus. This Good Shepherd
Sunday we are reminded that priests, deacons and
religious vocations are needed. They do not come from
outer space, but from the nurturing love of families and
parishes. We need to support vocations to the
priesthood, deaconate and religious life. If God calls, we
must nurture and support a person’s desire to answer the
call to serve God’s people. Pray for vocations.
