TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The Second Vatican Council decreed that the devotional life of the Church should be examined and reformed with an eye towards expressing Easter faith. This encouragement for creativity has deep roots in our tradition, and some attempts at reform show great promise. One of the great treasures in our devotional repertoire is a familiar feature of Lent: the Way of the Cross. The faithful walk a path recalling the events of Christ’s passion, a contemplative experience increasingly enriched these days by scripture and song. There are fourteen stations in the usual configuration, although in recent years, a fifteenth station of the Empty Tomb has been added. Why stop there? Why not develop a similar journey structured on the theme of the appearances of the Risen Lord? Over the last decade, a V ia Lucis, or “Way of Light,” has developed as a companion to the V ia Crucis. It has been celebrated at the Vatican and is catching on elsewhere. There are fourteen stations, beginning with the Women Carrying Spices to the Tomb, continuing with the familiar appearances of the Lord at Emmaus, the Upper Room, the shore of Tiberias. The journey ends with stations recalling the Apostles’ wait with Mary for the advent of the Spirit, and with Pentecost. This is fertile ground indeed for the genius of artists, musicians, preachers, and liturgists. This is a living example of how many of our traditions are born to fill a great spiritual need, and spread to every corner of the Church. It may even come soon to a church near you. Maybe next Eastertime! WWW . OURLADYOFTHEVALLEY . ORG I N O UR P ARISH L EGION O F M ARY A great apostolate of prayer and service. (Revelation 22:12-14, 16-17, 20) Gospel — Father, I pray that they may all be one, as you and I are one, that they may be brought to perfection . (John 17:20-26) SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER REVISITING OUR BAPTISM A mere seven weeks ago thousands of new Church members were baptized. Their new life in Christ has once again infused new life into the Church. Their new-found faith has inspired and bolstered the faith of those who have followed Christ for many years. As the Easter season nears its end, we revisit the scene of our baptisms. In the second reading we hear Christ calling us: “Come. . . . Let . . . the one who wants it receive the gift of life-giving water” (Revelation 22:17). But our baptism is not one of water only. John refers to washed robes, and we know that this washing is to be “in the blood of the Lamb.” To make sure we get this message, we have today’s first reading from Acts. It is the story of Stephen, the first Christian to be killed for his faith in Jesus. We remember the promise and also the cost of being a disciple of Christ MOTHER LOVE There is only one pretty child in the world, and every mother has it. —Chinese proverb DID YOU KNOW? Know the signs of human trafficking Human trafficking claims many young victims every year, and often, we see these victims in our daily lives. It is important to recognize the signs of abuse and to know how to interact with possible victims. The best way to start a tough conversation with teens who may be at risk is simply to talk to them—ask what’s going on in their lives, and if they are okay. Signs of abuse include suspicious or inexplicable injuries, avoidance, or reliance on an older “friend.” For more information please visit http:// www.missingkids.org/1in5.
