FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
Dress Up
Early in May, Danielle Steel, eminent author of
romantic novels many of which have become bestsellers, left San Francisco for good. The City by the
Bay had been her residence for so many years but
not anymore.
What is her reason for leaving? She says, “San
Francisco is a great city to raise children, but I was
very happy to leave it. There's no style, nobody
dresses up—you can't be chic there.”
Carl Nolte, a regular columnist of San Francisco
Chronicle concurs with the observation. He writes,
“There was a time in the past when people thought it
was important to dress well in this city - at least to go
downtown. Men wore a suit to work, or a sport coat.
Women wore heels and dressed for success. That day
is gone.”
He continues, “Now San Franciscans, men and
women, wear jeans to work, rumpled shirts, running
shoes, flip-flops, baseball caps.”
It’s not just San Francisco. I think it’s a general trend
of anything-goes be it in a restaurant, theatre or even
the church. For while I’m happy to note that most
who come to Sunday mass at St. Bruno’s are decently dressed, there are some who come garbed only
in t-shirt, shorts and tennis shoes. It’s as if they are
going for a workout or to a picnic. Even worse are
those who appear like they have just rolled out of
bed. It’s deplorable.
It’s not enough to show up for Sunday mass.
One needs also to dress up. It doesn’t mean wearing
fancy or expensive clothes, of being chic and fashionable. It is just being neat and presentable in appearance. Dressing up means that one takes the time
to look decent and dignified. It is a sign of respect to
oneself and to the person one is meeting.
We all know that the person we are meeting at
Sunday mass is not just anybody. It is God Himself.
He should be given the highest respect. When we
come to Sunday mass we should come with clean
hearts and also with clean and decent clothes.
Is there color coding? Not really, but white is
always good for Sunday as it symbolizes the resurrection. Blue is good for Saturday as the color is associated with Mary. Green is appropriate for St. Patrick’s Day. Red is for Good Friday and days of martyrs. Black is always elegant. Whatever color one
prefers, what matters is to dress up.
Fr. Michael B. Brillantes
Vestirse

“And the hand of the Lord will be made known to His servants,
but He will be indignant toward His enemies.” -Isaiah 66:14b
“And He caused His people to be very fruitful
and made them stronger than their adversaries.
He turned their hearts to hate His people,
to deal craftily with His servants.
His chosen servants performed
His wondrous acts among them. - Psalm 105:24, 27
SAINTS’ EXEMPLARY LIVES
“I would like to persuade spiritual persons
that the way to perfection does not consist
of many methods nor much thinking,
but in denying oneself in everything
and suffering everything for the love of Jesus Christ.”
- St. John of the Cross
Lord said to Blessed Angela of Foligno: “Those who are most
faithful to Me are dearest to Me and are My favorites.”
Upon hearing this, Blessed Angela was filled with such
an ardent desire for suffering and self-denial that upon
encountering great difficulties, she enjoyed as much
consolation as a worldly person would enjoy
in his favorite pastime.
