This year, as your new bishop, I will offer a keynote address, Religious Freedom and True Tolerance, which will follow the major keynote address, Safeguarding the Dignity of Every Human Person by the Most Reverend Oscar Cantú, bishop of Las Cruces, NM and chairman of the Committee on International Justice and Peace for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. There will be several workshops, which will highlight recent Church documents emphasizing the protection of all God’s people. The conference will also offer workshops that will cover prayer, forgiveness and Scripture. Catechetical workshops will be featured throughout the day on topics such as saints, and classroom management. The Most Reverend Brendan Cahill will offer his keynote address in English and the Most Reverend Oscar Cantú will be offering his keynote address in Spanish. 4) Online Registration available: www.victoriadiocese.org XXVIII Annual Conference for Catechesis & Ministry Major Keynote Address 9:30a.m. – 10:15a.m. XXVIII Annual Conference for Catechesis & Ministry Safeguarding the Dignity of Every Human Person Oscar Cantú, chairman of the United States Conference of The Most Reverend Catholic Bishops (USCCB) Committee for International Justice and Peace will address the injustices and atrocities he has witnessed on his recent travels to Iraq, Latin America, Asia and the problems faced here in our own country. In a recent letter to members of the Senate Committees on Foreign Relations in DC, Cantú stated, “Now is the time for dialogue and building Washington, bridges which foster peace and greater understanding.” He urges all people of goodwill to work toward protections of the marginalized and persecuted. This work has brought joy to many, and a spiritual crisis of faith for others. Members of other world religious bodies, environmental scientists and many political leaders have welcomed Francis’ contribution with enthusiasm, while others seek for ways to discredit it. Each of us has a moral obligation to know what Francis’ message is, and to ask ourselves: “How will I respond?” C-22 Laudato Si: For Your Students Anne Comeaux In this workshop, you will learn how you can help your students – grade school through adults – appreciate Pope Francis’ encyclical letter, “On Care of Our Common Home.” C-23 Time Saving Approaches to Creative Lesson Planning Janice Berger (Sponsored by Sadlier) We will discuss ways to create lessons that are engaging, relevant and meaningful while being respectful of our busy lives. Sr. Clare Underbrink What makes it so difficult to forgive? To accept forgiveness? As we move into the Year of Mercy, we are called to reflect on God’s infinite love and mercy and to practice it in our daily lives. In this workshop, participants will explore both theological understandings of forgiveness and its practical applications. C-14 Mercy for the Marginalized Rev. Gabriel Espinosa In this workshop, we will examine how the Mercy of God always recognizes the dignity of the marginalized. C-15 Prayer: The Most Important Part of Every Lesson Sr. Digna Vela Helping students learn how to pray rather than saying prayers is one of the greatest gifts catechists can give to their students. Prayer helps us to connect to God and to deepen our love relationship with God. This workshop will give catechists valuable ways to lead students into a life of prayer that will enrich their faith life and give them a thirst to learn more about this awesome and loving God. In his keynote address, Religious Freedom and True Tolerance, the Most Reverend Brendan Cahill, third bishop of the Diocese of Victoria will refer to the writings of American theologian, Father John Courtney Murray, who had an influence on the teachings of the Second Vatican Council on the question of religious freedom. B-2 Prison Ministry – Work of Mercy B-8 How to Answer the 10 Most Common Objections to the Bible Rev. Gabriel Espinosa In this workshop participants will be given an explanation of how the Church recognizes the dignity of the imprisoned and offers the incarcerated the opportunity to experience conversion and healing. B-3 Prayer: The Most Important Part of Every Lesson Sr. Digna Vela Helping students learn how to pray rather than saying prayers is one of the greatest gifts catechists can give to their students. Bob Knippenberg In our post-Christian culture, there is a lot of ignorance, criticism, misinformation, and “trash talk” about the Bible. As a result, Christians today will face many objections regarding the Bible. What we will do in this workshop is cover the ten most common objections against the Bible in our culture. These ten objections in no way exhaust all the doubts people might have about the Bible, but they are the ones you will most frequently encounter. B-9 How to Have a Serene, Quiet, Trouble-Free Classroom: Well…at Least We’ll Try Anne Comeaux Classroom management is the key to having students engaged but not rowdy or wild. In this workshop, simple ideas will be offered to help you be a great catechist with fewer challenges in your classroom. B-10 Year of Jubilee and What We Should Know Janice Berger (Sponsored by Sadlier) Pope Francis declared that on December 8, 2015, we will enter a Jubilee Year of Mercy. In this workshop, we will look at the scriptural roots and history of Jubilee years and why they are important. We will also discuss ways to share this information with families and students. B-11 A Spanish Funeral? OMG! What’s the Repertoire? (bi-lingual) Pablo Ocañas With a growing demand for funerals in Spanish, what are the musical options in the Spanish repertoire for our dearly departed? In this workshop, participants can increase their knowledge of music that can be used for Spanish funerals.
