Estimados pasajeros:
A
lo largo de los casi 14 años que AIR NOSTRUM lleva operando,
la aerolínea ha sido galardonada con numerosas distinciones y
reconocimientos que premiaban el trabajo y el esfuerzo de todo un
equipo por mantener los más altos niveles de calidad. De hecho, en la
actualidad AIR NOSTRUM es la única aerolínea regional europea
que ha obtenido cuatro veces el premio a la Aerolínea del Año, en
su categoría Oro, otorgado por la ERA (European Regions Airline
Association); así como la Palma de Oro a la Excelencia Sostenida,
distinción con la que la ERA reconoce el mantenimiento de una
excelente calidad de la operación de forma continuada.
Si les cuento todo esto, es para hablarles de un hito del que
me siento especialmente orgulloso e ilusionado; no sólo por el
reconocimiento que significa para la compañía, sino porque a
ustedes les garantiza que AIR NOSTRUM cumple con los más altos
estándares de seguridad de la industria aeronáutica mundial. Es
por ello que me resulta muy grato informarles que nuestra aerolínea
ha sido oficialmente registrada por IATA (International Air Transport
Association) como compañía aérea IOSA (IATA Operational Safety
Audit, por sus siglas en inglés), tras haber superado con plena
satisfacción todos los requerimientos de este prestigioso y reconocido estándar global en auditorías de aviación comercial. Dicha
auditoría, de carácter voluntario, ha sido realizada por la empresa
Wake QA (una de las 8 organizaciones autorizadas a realizarlas en
el mundo).
En este sentido considero oportuno explicarles, si ustedes me
lo permiten, lo que supone la concesión de esta distinción. La
auditoría IOSA evalúa los Sistemas de Control de Seguridad de las
aerolíneas, auditando áreas como la organización y gestión corporativa,
operación de las aeronaves, despacho de vuelos, ingeniería y mantenimiento de la flota, operaciones en cabina, servicio de atención de vuelos,
operaciones de carga y seguridad operacional, etcétera.
Este nuevo programa IOSA –desarrollado por IATA– no sólo audita con
precisión y detalle cada departamento de la compañía aérea, sino también
la interrelación entre los mismos y la organización en su conjunto, acreditando la seguridad y calidad de las operaciones así como su control. La
auditoría IOSA se renueva cada 2 años y es un instrumento de verificación
y actualización continua con las mejores prácticas de la industria.
El programa IOSA establece los requerimientos más exigentes en el área
de seguridad operacional, incluyendo los estipulados por la Organización de Aviación Civil Internacional (OACI), los de las autoridades
aeronáuticas europeas (JAA/EASA) y de las norteamericanas (FAA).
Y es que, por encima de cualquier otro condicionamiento, la seguridad
de nuestra operación ha sido, es y será nuestra máxima prioridad. Por
ello, el cumplimiento de las normas y prácticas del Programa IOSA es
para AIR NOSTRUM y, sobre todo, para ustedes la mejor muestra del
esfuerzo riguroso y continuado por alcanzar los máximos estándares
de seguridad en cada una de las fases de nuestra operativa.
A
s I am sure many of you have realised, AIR NOSTRUM has, since it
began operating nearly 14 years ago, been awarded an important
number of prizes for the work and efforts of its staff to maintain its high
levels of quality. Spain’s leading regional aviation company is, at present,
the only European regional aviation company to have obtained the ERA
(European Regions Airline Association) European Regional Airline of the
Year Award on four different occasions and its Palm d’Or for Sustained
Excellence, awarded for maintaining the high quality level of its operations.
I am proud to be able to announce yet another important award. I would
like to say that I am particularly excited about this award not only for
what it means to AIR NOSTRUM as an airline, but for our passengers
since this new award guarantees the observance of the International
Aeronautical Industry’s highest security standards. AIR NOSTRUM
has been officially registered by the IATA (International Air Transport
Association) as an IOSA (IATA Operational Safety Audit) airline, having
successfully complied with the requirements of this prestigious
international standard with regard to commercial aviation audits.
The IOSA was carried out by the company, Wake QA (one of the
8 organisations authorised to carry out this type of audit programme).
I would like to take this opportunity in order to explain what this type
of Standard Certificate actually entails. The IATA Operational Safety Audit
Programme assesses the operational management and control systems
of an airline including, amongst other things, its flight operations, flight
control, aircraft engineering and maintenance, cockpit operations, flight
services, cargo operations and operational security.
This Operational Safety Audit Programme, developed by the IATA, not
only audits individual airline departments, but also the relationship
between the different departments and department organisation as a
whole offering, as a result, high levels of security and quality as well as
operational control. The IOSA Certificate is renewed every two years and
is an excellent tool for the verification and continual updating of the
Aeronautical Industry’s best business practises.
The IOSA Programme establishes the highest requirements in the area
of operational security including those established by the International
Civil Aviation Organisation and the European Aviation Authorities
(JAA/EASA) and American Aviation Authorities (FAA).
As you can see, we consider the security of our operations one of
our main priorities. The fulfilment of the rules and regulations of
the IOSA Programme is for AIR NOSTRUM and, above all, for our
passengers, a clear example of the continual and rigorous efforts
made by our Company to reach the highest standards of
security in each of the phases of its flight operations.

Entre el 12 de julio y el 16 de agosto de este año se cumplen setenta y cinco de
teatro. De festival. Cincuenta y cuatro ediciones para celebrar y repasar, para
“revisitar”. Durante estos meses de verano, y con el prólogo de una intensísima
primavera repleta de actos, el Festival de Teatro Clásico de Mérida recuerda su
historia, es decir, hace balance de su pasado, pero no olvida mirar también hacia
el futuro. Se “reescribe” a sí mismo, renace y crece. Como ha hecho tantas otras
veces, desde su fundación, en 1933.
The Merida Classical Theatre Festival will be celebrating, between 12th
July and 16th August, 2008, its 75th anniversary; fifty-four festivals full
of delightful anecdotes. This Classical Theatre Festival will, during the
summer months of July and August and following an intense Spring
prologue full of magnificent events, be taking a good look at its past
whilst keeping its sights firmly set on the future. The Festival will be
“re-inventing” itself as it has on so many occasions since its inauguration
in 1933.

sa fecha es clave. Como lo son los nombres que la acompañan: Margarita Xirgu,
Manuel Azaña, Cipriano de Rivas Cherif, Fernando de los Ríos, Miguel de Unamuno.
Toda una época, toda una cultura. Intelectuales que inscribieron la “idea” de este Festival
dentro de lo que podríamos llamar, como escribiera Panofsky, “cultura grecolatina
expandida”. Una esencia necesaria que se recupera con acierto en esta nueva edición, una
vuelta al “clasicismo” que va a tener su puesta en escena en dos espacios únicos, bien
conocidos por los amantes de este festival: el teatro y anfiteatro romanos de Mérida.
El primero presentará, como ha señalado la organización, “textos verdaderamente
clásicos”, mientras que el segundo dirigirá otra mirada a las obras grecolatinas, para
mostrar “su vigencia”: Las Troyanas, de Eurípides (con dirección de Mario Gas); Miles
Gloriosus, de Plauto (con nombres como José Sancho o Pepe Viyuela); Edipo rey, de
Sófocles (con Ernesto Alterio y Carmen Elías)…

El 18 de junio pasado, exactamente, se cumplía el setenta y cinco aniversario de la
primera representación teatral de la era contemporánea en el Teatro Romano. Ese mismo

names such as Margarita Xirgu, Manuel Azaña, Cipriano de Rivas Cherif, Fernando
de los Ríos and Miguel de Unamuno. An outstanding period during which a group of
intellectuals inscribed the “idea” of a classical theatre festival within what could be
described, in the words of Panofsky, as an “expansion of Greek-Latin culture”. The
original spirit of this event has been recaptured this year. Its return to “Classicism”
will be represented in two different scenarios, both well-known to Merida Festival
lovers: the Merida Roman Theatre and Amphitheatre. The first of these will be offering
a selection of “authentic classical texts” whilst the second scenario will focus on GreekLatin works in an effort to demonstrate their undeniable “relevance”. Works include
the Trojans by Euripides (directed by Mario Gas), Miles Gloriosus by Plauto (starring
Jose Sancho and Pepe Viyuela) and Oedipus, the King by Sofocles (starring Ernesto
Alterio and Carmen Elias).

día, pero en 1933, en plena Segunda República, la actriz Margarita Xirgu, quizá la más
famosa de su época en España, un verdadero mito (y a la que se rinden numerosos
homenajes este año en el marco del Festival bajo el lema “Xirgu 33”), se convertía entre las
antiquísima piedras de Mérida en la Medea de Séneca. A esa primera representación
acudieron, además del autor de la versión, Miguel de Unamuno, las máximas autoridades
de la nación: el presidente del Gobierno, Manuel Azaña, y el ministro de Estado, Fernando
de los Ríos.
Unos pocos años antes, en 1926, Xirgu, que era la primera actriz de la compañía estable
del Teatro Español de Madrid, dirigido por Cipriano Rivas Cherif, había “descubierto”
Mérida. Tras este hallazgo, y gracias al apoyo de Rivas Cherif y del gobierno republicano,
una pequeña ciudad se convertiría de nuevo en capital de la cultura de todo un país: el
Festival de Teatro, entonces llamado “de las Artes Clásicas”, marcó un viaje en el tiempo,
volviendo diecisiete siglos atrás, hasta la capital de buena parte de la Hispania romana, al
mismo tiempo que proyectaba su nombre, Mérida, hacia el siglo XXI.
Además de los homenajes a Xirgu y de la recuperación del clasicismo grecolatino del
Festival, este año es noticia destacada la recuperación del proyecto de publicaciones que

Seneca. Miguel de Unamuno, author of the version of this classical play, took part in
this historical event in the company of a variety of important government members
such as the Republican President of Spain, Mr. Manuel Azaña, and the Minister of
State, Mr. Fernando de los Rios.
In 1926, several years prior to the inauguration of the Merida Classical Theatre
Festival, Margarita Xirgu, leading actress of the Spanish Theatre of Madrid, directed by
Cipriano Rivas Cherif, “discovered” Merida. Following this discovery, and thanks to the
support of Cipriano Rivas Cherif and the Republican government of Spain, a small
provincial town was to become the new cultural capital of an entire country. The Merida
Classical Theatre Festival, known then as the Classical Arts Theatre Festival, signalled
a journey back through time, some seventeen centuries, to the capital of Hispania.
In addition to the commemorative events organised in honour of Margarita Xirgu
and the recovery of the subject of Greek-Latin classicism in the Festival, this year’s
Festival is marked by the recovery of a project for the publication of texts such as the
tutelary Medea by Seneca, translated by Unamuno and a tale by Jose Monleon titled
Los jamones y paletas “DEHESA DE EXTREMADURA” no necesitan una forma de conservación especial para disfrutarlos plenamente, tan solo un lugar
fresco y seco, preferentemente colgados o sobre un
soporte jamonero. Para su degustación sin embargo,
conviene observar estas sencillas normas:
• El consumo será a temperatura ambiente, nunca frío.
• Las piezas deben cortarse justo antes de ser servidas.
• Las lonchas serán finas, de mediano tamaño.
• Todas las lonchas llevarán grasa intramuscular, para
hacerlas más jugosas.
Así descubriremos la auténtica personalidad de todo un
“DEHESA DE EXTREMADURA”:
Su sabor agradable al paladar, sabroso, pero
nada salado, su carne untuosa y fragante, que
resbala en boca, dejando un regusto a exquisitos
y delicados aromas, en suma, todo un lujo para
los sentidos.
El control de la trazabilidad del cerdo en montanera y
de la elaboración del jamón y paleta en la industria es
llevado a cabo por los Servicios Técnicos del Consejo
Regulador, quienes cerdo a cerdo y pieza por pieza,
supervisan todo el proceso, incluido el etiquetado final,
en el que tras calar las piezas, colocan la etiqueta numerada de DEHESA DE EXTREMADURA.

GASTRONOMÍA: Caldereta, cocido y gazpacho extremeños, migas, cochinillo,
hígado de cordero encebollado, criadillas, cordero asado, cabrito, “quesaillas”,
embutidos y jamones ibéricos, tapas... De la repostería destacar la tarta Técula
Mécula, las perrunillas, las hojaldradas de almendra, el arrope, los bollos de
chicharrones y las calderillas. Para beber recomendamos los excelentes vinos
de la Tierra de Extremadura o los adscritos a la D.O. Ribera del Guadiana.

Unamuno; además de una historia del Festival de José Monleón titulada Los caminos de
un encuentro popular con los clásicos grecolatinos, que despliega una atenta mirada al
bagaje de un Festival que en 1984 pasó a ser gestionado por la entonces joven Junta de
Extremadura; un volumen de entrevistas con veinte protagonistas de la historia del Festival
a cargo, entre otros, de Sonia Domínguez y Susana Sanz.
ESPACIOS ÚNICOS
Evidentemente, el nombre del Festival y su aura están ligados a esos dos espacios
únicos que son el Teatro y Anfiteatro romanos. Tan importantes como los textos que en
ellos se representan, estos dos “escenarios” son el corazón de un evento tan ligado a lo
teatral como a lo arquitectónico. Como escribiera el poeta José Ángel Valente, “la piedra
aquí es también palabra”.
El Teatro Romano es el “príncipe de los monumentos emeritenses”, según dijera
Menéndez Pidal, que dirigió su reconstrucción, con uno de los peristilos (zona ajardinada
tras la escena) más bellos de la España romana. Regalado por el cónsul Marco Agripa,
yerno del emperador Octavio Augusto, a la recién fundada ciudad entre los años 16 y
15 a.C., según consta en las inscripciones de sus dos puertas de acceso, conserva las partes
en las que entonces se sentaban los espectadores según su clase social: orchestra, cavea
ima, cavea media y, por último, cavea summa, que ocupaba la zona más elevada del teatro.
El anfiteatro, financiado también por Agripa, y que acogía la celebración de juegos y
luchas, se ha convertido con el paso del tiempo en uno de los escenarios al aire libre más
impresionantes de la actualidad. En el pasado pudo albergar casi quince mil espectadores
y el eje mayor de su elipsis tiene más de cincuenta metros, lo que da idea de su esplendor.
Un esplendor, como el del Teatro, vivo todavía en este año de celebraciones.

from Extremadura to Madrid, Bilbao and Barcelona. During the month of August
a flight service will be offered to Majorca.

“Los caminos de un encuentro popular con los clasicos grecolatinos” (An encounter
with the Greek-Latin classics) offering a stroll through the history of this classical
theatre festival taken over, in 1984, by the Extremadura Regional Government. This
year’s texts also include a volume of interviews offered by 20 protagonists of the
Festival that include Sonia Dominguez and Susana Sanz amongst others.
UNIQUE SPACES
Evidently, there is a strong link between the name of the Festival and the unique
Merida Roman Theatre and Amphitheatre. These monumental buildings are obviously
just as important as the plays performed. The Merida Roman Theatre and Amphitheatre
represent the heart of an event associated with both performing arts and architecture
or, in the words of the poet, Jose Angel Valente, “here stone is linked to word”.
The Roman Theatre is Merida’s “Prince of Monuments” according to Menendez
Pidal, responsible for its re-construction, and had one of the most beautiful “peristilos”
(garden area behind the stage) in Hispania. The Theatre was a present from the Roman
consul, Marco Agrippa, son-in-law of the Emperor Octavio Augustus to a city founded
between 15 and 16BC, according to the inscriptions on the two access doors. It
conserves, to the present day, the areas used for the different social classes. These
are the orchestra, ‘cavea ima’, ‘cavea media’ and, lastly, ‘cavea summa’, the area
occupying the highest part of the theatre.
The Roman Amphitheatre, also financed by Marco Agrippa, was built for the
celebration of different types of games and combats. Today, it is one of Spain’s most
spectacular open-air theatres. Originally built to seat some 15,000 spectators, the main
axis of its ellipsis of over fifty meters offers an excellent idea of its ancient splendour,
a splendour that continues to shine to the present day.

Esta imponente y emblemática edificación defensiva árabe alzada sobre sillares
romanos, la más llamativa de cuantas
salpican la no menos representativa Plaza
Mayor, debe su denominación, según
muchos autores, al califa Abú-Ya'qub,
cuyos ejércitos conquistaron la urbe extremeña el 10 de marzo de 1173 tras varios
meses de asedio. La torre, cuyos 25 metros
de altura garantizan unas excelentes panorámicas, alberga un interesante centro de
interpretación de muy recomendable visita
para los turistas.
This imposing and emblematic Arab
defence building, built on the site of a
Roman ruin, is the most outstanding
building on the city’s representative Main
Town Square. According to a number of
historians, it owes it name to the Caliph
Abu-Ya’qub whose armies conquered
the city of Caceres on 10th March, 1173
following a siege that had lasted several
months. This 25-meter high tower offers
a number of spectacular panoramic views
of the city. It also houses an interesting
interpretation centre.

los restos de un primitivo inmueble del
siglo XIII, la Iglesia de Santa María, concatedral desde 1957 compartiendo sede episcopal con la Catedral de Coria, despunta

retablo del Altar Mayor efectuado en madera
de cedro por Roque Balduque y Guillén
de Ferrant; la portada plateresca de la
sacristía, de Alonso de Torralba; la Pila
de Agua Bendita realizada en mármol en
el siglo XIV... constituyen algunos de sus
principales núcleos de interés.
Built during the 15th and 16th centuries

Nacional de Monfragüe despunta por su

representativas de bosque y matorral mediterráneo. Destacar la presencia de especies
animales tan espectaculares como águilas
imperiales y perdiceras, cigüeñas y buitres
negros, cormoranes, búhos reales, ruiseñores, nutrias, ciervos, meloncillos... y
vegetales como madroños, brezos, encinas,
alcornoques, quejigos... Un impresionante
castillo del siglo XII es otro de sus lugares
de recomendada visita.
The Monfragüe National Park, situated
in the province of Caceres, was declared
Extremadura’s first national park in March,
2007. It stands out, amongst other things,
for the exceptional biodiversity, constituting
one of the largest and most representative
Mediterranean forest areas in Spain. It is
home of spectacular bird species such as
the golden and Bonelli’s eagle, the stork,
monk vulture, cormorant, eagle owl and
other smaller bird species such as the
robin. Its mammals include the otter,
deer and a type of mongoose known as
the “meloncillo”. Its flora is made up of
numerous plant species that include,
amongst others, madrone, Holm oak,
gall oak, cork, heather etc. Visitors will
also find a magnificent 12th century
castle definitely worth a visit.

El doble campeón olímpico, elegido para ser el abanderado de España durante
la ceremonia de apertura de los Juegos Olímpicos de Pekín 2008, se erige como
una de las opciones más claras y seguras de conquistar una medalla olímpica para
nuestro país, con la particularidad de que si lograse la victoria se convertiría
automáticamente en el primer español que ha ganado tres oros en unos Juegos
Olímpicos. Esperamos y deseamos que Gervasio sea capaz de hacer realidad esa
frase popular tan nuestra de “no hay dos sin tres”.
Gervasio Deferr, a Spanish double Olympic champion, has been chosen
as flag leader of the Spanish Olympic Team during the Opening Ceremony
of the 2008 Olympic Games in Peking. This outstanding gymnast is one
of Spain’s best candidates for an Olympic gold medal. Should Gervasio
manage to win a gold medal in this edition of the Olympics, he would
become the first Spanish athlete to have won three gold medals in the
entire history of Spanish sport. Hopefully, he will become living proof
of the popular Spanish saying: “No hay dos sin tres” (There is never two
without three).

La verdad es que la máxima es ganar otra

Eres el deportista español, junto a los
regatistas Teresa Zabel y José Luis
Doreste, en atesorar dos medallas de
oro olímpicas. ¿Creías cuando empezaste que llegarías tan lejos?
No sólo he alcanzado las metas que me
plantee, sino que las he superado con
creces. Con total sinceridad, nunca pensé
que llegaría hasta donde lo he hecho.
¿En qué modalidad te sientes más
cómodo?
En la que mejor me siento es en suelo, pero
en salto, al ser más corto, me resulta más
fácil competir.
¿Cómo es un día normal de entrenamiento?
Entreno dos sesiones, siempre encima de
los aparatos en los que voy a competir.
Básicamente, lo que pretendo es automatizar la competición.
¿Tienes alguna manía antes de competir?
Sí, ducharme con agua helada.
¿Cuáles son tus aficiones fuera del
ámbito de la gimnasia?
Me gusta leer, escuchar música y, sobre
todo, estar con mi familia.

It is a great honour to have been chosen
from amongst so many extraordinary
Spanish athletes. I must say that I feel
very, very honoured and very excited.
You are the only Spanish athlete,
together with the regatta champions,
Teresa Zabel and Jose Luis Doreste,
to have won two Olympic medals. Did
you ever expect to get this far in your
career?
No, although I have managed to
accomplish most of my objectives, this
is beyond my wildest dreams. To be
perfectly honest, I never really thought I
would be this successful.
What is your favourite exercise?
Well, my favourite is, without a doubt,
the floor exercise. Although, having said
that, I find I get better results in the
shorter men’s vault exercise.
How do you train for this type of
competition?
Well, my daily training is normally
divided into two sessions. I spend most
of my time practising on the apparatus
I will be competing on. Basically, what I
try and do is repeat the exercises until
they become totally automatic.
Do you carry out any rituals before
competing?
Yes, I like to have a very cold shower
before competing.

Les recomendaría que todas las acciones

lo que he hecho y así es como he actuado
en todo momento.
Recomiéndanos algo sencillo que

para mantenernos en forma...
Caminar es muy bueno, como lo es también,
en la medida de lo posible, nadar.
¿Has pensado a qué te dedicarás
cuando dejes la gimnasia profesional?
Supongo que seguiré ligado a este mundo,
si bien no sé de que forma. Intuyo que quizá
pueda ser como entrenador.
¿Dónde y cómo te ves dentro de
veinte años?
No tengo ni idea, nunca me lo he planteado
(risas).
Vuelas frecuentemente con Iberia
Regional AIR NOSTRUM, ¿qué aspectos destacarías de la compañía?
Viajo con mucha frecuencia con vosotros
y la característica que subrayaría es que,
pese a la complicación actual de muchos
viajes, con AIR NOSTRUM nunca he tenido
ningún problema.

not competing?
I like reading, listening to music and,
above all, spending time with my family.
What advice would you give our readers
so that they can, like you, succeed at
anything they decide to do?
I would advise them to do whatever it is
that they want to do with great passion
and full dedication. This is the secret
behind everything I have ever done and
the philosophy with which I normally
approach things.
Can you recommend something simple
to help our readers stay in form?
Brisk walking is a great way to keep in
form. I would also recommend swimming
as it is an excellent all round exercise.
Have you thought about what you will
do when you retire from professional
gymnastics?
I am not quite sure in which area, but I
imagine I will continue in the world of
athletics, probably in something that has
to do with training.
Where and how do you see yourself in
twenty years from now?
I have no idea; it is something I have
never actually taken into consideration
(laughter).
As a frequent flyer with Iberia Regional
AIR NOSTRUM, what do you like best
about our airline?
I fly a lot with AIR NOSTRUM and have
absolutely no complaints whatsoever.
That is, in itself, something that should be
taken into account, especially considering

The 220 kilometre Cantabria coast stretches from the mouth of the
River Deva in the west to the Onton Estuary in the east. Its coastline,
shaped by the strong currents of the Cantabria Sea, is made up of
rocky cliffs, small islands, long golden sandy beaches, small coves
and inlets, river estuaries, natural harbours as well as a variety of
fishing villages. The capricious combination of colours produced by
the blue Cantabria seas and green Cantabria pastures provides
visitors with a marvellous display of natural beauty.

los entrantes y salientes, la costa de Cantabria se caracteriza por la gran variedad de
formaciones y accidentes que presenta. A lo largo del litoral, se alternan abruptos acantilados, algunos de más de 140 metros de altura sobre el nivel del mar, entre los que se abren
alrededor de 90 playas y preciosas rías y marismas. Destacan en esta línea costera las
espléndidas bahías de Santander y Santoña, únicas en el litoral del norte de España.
Durante milenios, la costa de Cantabria se ha esculpido por la erosión producida por el
embate de las olas contra la tierra, produciendo de esta lucha entre el mar y la montaña un
paisaje de promontorios y cabos, penínsulas, largos arenales, pequeñas calas, ensenadas
y bahías, donde el hombre ha situado sus puertos, castillos y faros.
Dentro de la franja costera existen espléndidas reservas naturales como los Parques
Naturales de las Marismas de Santoña, parada obligatoria para miles de aves durante sus
migraciones; las Dunas de Liencres u Oyambre, todos ellos de gran valor paisajístico.
En la línea litoral de Cantabria se ubican una treintena de municipios costeros que,
desde tiempos inmemoriales han tenido en el mar su fuente de riqueza, a través de la
pesca, la construcción de barcos o los viajes de ultramar
Esa historia ha llegado hasta nuestros días, y está escrita en las bellas villas marineras de
Laredo, Castro Urdiales, Santoña, Suances, Comillas o San Vicente de la Barquera, en las
que pervive la milenaria tradición pesquera. Todas ellas se caracterizan, además, por su
rico patrimonio histórico. Así, Comillas, y las pueblas viejas de Castro Urdiales, Laredo y
San Vicente de la Barquera tienen la consideración de conjuntos históricos monumentales.
Por su parte Santoña cuenta con magníficos edificios, vestigios de su pasado como plaza
defensiva. Además, estas villas marineras, que mantienen una intensa vida durante todo el
año, cuentan con una excelente oferta de restaurantes con una gastronomía basada en la mar.
En las salobres aguas del Cantábrico habitan una numerosa variedad de especies
marinas, que son la base de una rica y tradicional gastronomía y entre cuyos representantes encontramos a los peces de roca de recio sabor, las sardinas y bocartes (boquerones), el preciado bonito, el rape, la merluza y los mariscos. La excelente calidad de los

measure nearly a thousand kilometres if we were to measure its inlets
and outlets, is characterised by a large variety of rugged cliffs and other rock
formations. This spectacular coastline offers breathtaking cliffs, some standing
some 140 meters above sea level, and approximately 90 beaches together with
a variety of beautiful estuaries and marshlands. Here visitors will find, amongst
other things, the unique Santander and Santoña bays.

Its picturesque fishing towns include the towns of Laredo, Castro Urdiales,
Santoña, Suances, Comillas and San Vicente de la Barquera. These magnificent
towns not only stand out for their fishing activities, but also for their rich
historical patrimony. Comillas, Castro Urdiales, Laredo and San Vicente de la
Barquera have all been declared Historical Monumental sites whilst Santoña is
not only home of a variety of magnificent buildings, but also a number of
important ruins including its famous arms square. This group of picturesque
fishing towns is also home of a selection of excellent first-class fish restaurants
as is to be expected.

pescados y mariscos cantábricos ha motivado que su elaboración sea muy sencilla,
huyendo de los aditamentos que disfrazan el sabor de estos habitantes marinos. El guiso
marinero por excelencia de Cantabria es la marmita, un plato tradicional de los pescadores,
cuya base es el bonito del norte acompañado de patata.
PLAYAS
En la costa cántabra se abren alrededor de 90 playas. Desde los extensos arenales,
algunos con más de tres kilómetros de longitud como las playas de Merón en San Vicente
de la Barquera o La Salvé, en Laredo, a pequeñas y recogidas calas, todas con una arena
dorada y fina y aguas de gran calidad.
Solitarias, bajo acantilados, urbanas, salvajes... las playas de Cantabria ofrecen toda la
variedad posible en cuanto a paisajes, formas y ubicación.
Como ejemplo de playas urbanas, encontramos las de Santander, integradas en
la ciudad e impecablemente limpias, que se iluminan durante la noche para fundirse
con el conjunto que forman el Palacio de la Magdalena y el edificio del Gran Casino.
Con nombres como La Concha, El Camello, La Magdalena, la Primera y Segunda de
El Sardinero o Mataleñas, estas playas, muy concurridas durante el verano, sirven de lugar
de esparcimiento y paseos durante todo el año.
Otros ejemplos de magníficos arenales urbanos los encontramos en las villas de Castro
Urdiales, Laredo, Noja, Suances o Comillas.
Junto a este tipo, encontramos las solitarias, alejadas de grandes núcleos urbanos y
situadas en bellos parajes naturales. Algunos ejemplos de éstas serían las de Berria en
Santoña; Langre, en Ribamontán al Mar; El Puntal, en Pedreña; Oyambre, en Valdáliga o
El Merón, en San Vicente de la Barquera. Todas ellas grandes arenales abiertos al mar y de
fina y dorada arena.
Intercaladas entre estos grandes arenales, se reparten multitud de calas, algunas de ellas
frecuentadas, incluso en los meses de invierno, por los aficionados al surf.
The Cantabria Sea is home of a wide variety of fish species. These form an
important part of the local gastronomy, famous for its mouth-watering specialities.
Dishes include a variety of strong-flavoured rockfish, sardines and fresh anchovies
as well as the local white tuna fish, monkfish, hake and, of course, an excellent
selection of shellfish. The unique taste and exceptional quality of the local Cantabria
fish and shellfish are responsible for the elaboration of dishes with very little
seasoning. Its most famous dish is, without a doubt, the ‘Marmitako’, a traditional
fisherman’s stew. This dish takes its name from the cooking pot in which it is prepared
with white tuna and whole new potatoes in a piquant, pureed red pepper sauce.
BEACHES
Visitors will find some 90 beaches dotted along the Cantabria coast. Long
sandy beaches, some over three kilometres long, such as the Meron Beach in
the municipality of San Vicente de la Barquera and the La Salve Beach in the
municipality of Laredo can be found side by side with small picturesque coves.
Solitary beaches, rugged cliff beaches, urban beaches and deserted beaches, the
Cantabria coast is home of a wide selection of locations and landscapes.
For example, urban beaches such as the beautiful beaches of Santander form
part of the city itself where their superb illumination blends in with the illumination
of the Palacio de la Magdalena and the Gran Casino. Also worth mentioning are the
La Concha, El Camello, La Magdalena, the El Sardinero and Mataleñas beaches.
These popular beaches are not only ideal for a relaxing summer holiday, but also
for a peaceful stroll whatever time of the year.
The towns of Castro Urdiales, Laredo, Noja, Suances and Comillas also have an
excellent selection of urban beaches.
Far from these bustling urban beaches, adventurous visitors will find a variety
of attractive solitary beaches situated in areas of extraordinary natural beauty.

Tal es la singularidad de este magnífico
lugar, declarado Monumento Nacional en
1924 y Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la
UNESCO en 1985, que muchos investigadores la consideran la “Capilla Sixtina del
Arte Cuaternario”. Descubiertas en 1879
por Marcelino Sanz de Sautuola, a lo largo
de sus 270 metros se encuentran representados signos cabalísticos, además de
toros, bisontes, caballos y otros animales.
La figura pintada de mayor tamaño, de 2,25
metros de longitud, es la “Gran Cierva”.

La Comunitat Valenciana vive en 2008 un año de grandes eventos: el Gran Premio
de Fórmula 1 en el Valencia Street Circuit, la salida de la Volvo Ocean Race desde
Alicante y el Comunitat Valenciana Masters de Golf Castellón Costa Azahar en
Castellón. Los tres eventos proyectarán la imagen de la Comunitat Valenciana en
todo el mundo. Un logro conseguido gracias a la Generalitat que ha demostrado
gran capacidad organizativa y que ha invertido trabajo y esfuerzo en situar a la
Comunitat Valenciana como referente en la organización de grandes eventos.
El primero de ellos se celebra el 24 de agosto en Valencia, y la capital del Turia ya
está preparada para acoger miles de visitantes.
The Comunitat Valenciana will, during 2008, be playing host to a number
of great events: the Formula I Grand Prix, to take place on the Valencia
Street Racing Circuit, in Valencia, the launch of the Volvo Ocean Race in
Alicante and the Comunitat Valenciana Castellon Costa Azahar Golf
Masters Championship in Castellon. These three events will project the
image of Valencia across the world. The Comunitat Valenciana has been
chosen to host these important macro events thanks to the excellent
organisational capacity of the Generalitat Valenciana (Regional Valencia
Government) and the work and effort employed in turning it into an
international reference point as far as the organisation of important
international events are concerned. The first of these three events will take
place on 24th August, 2008 in the city of Valencia, a city prepared to
receive thousands of visitors.

n plena temporada estival llega el Gran Premio de Fórmula 1 a la ciudad de Valencia.
Este evento supone una repercusión mediática impresionante en todo el mundo.
Con datos actuales, alrededor de 500 millones de espectadores siguen cada uno de
los 18 grandes premios que componen el Campeonato del Mundo de Fórmula 1, cifras
comparables a los más grandes eventos deportivos tales como los Juegos Olímpicos o el
Campeonato Mundial de Fútbol.
A estas cifras hay que añadir el impacto directo en la ciudad y en toda su área de
influencia de la visita de un gran número de aficionados que asistirán en vivo a uno de los
espectáculos más valorados por el público. Una valoración previa indica que los ingresos
directos ascenderán a cerca de 70 millones de euros.
La Comunitat Valenciana ya es experta en los deportes sobre ruedas, ya que desde 1999
el Circuit de la Comunitat Valenciana Ricardo Tormo en Cheste celebra grandes competiciones del mundo del motor, entre las que destaca la celebración del Gran Premio
de Motociclismo, con un impacto directo superior a los 45 millones de euros y más de
200.000 visitantes en un solo fin de semana.

he Formula I Gran Prix will be taking place in the city of Valencia at the height
of the summer season during which it will receive an impressive amount of
international media coverage. According to present-day data, approximately 500
million spectators follow the 18 individual stages of the Formula I Gran Prix World
Championship; a similar figure to the one recorded for other important sporting
events such as the Olympic Games or World Football Championships.
The city and its surrounding areas will, in addition to the above, receive the impact
of the thousands of spectators travelling to Valencia for this popular event. In this
respect, the Formula I Gran Prix is expected to provide a direct income figure of
approximately 70 million euros.
The Comunitat Valencia is an expert in motor sport events thanks, amongst other
things, to the inauguration, in 1999, of the Circuit de la Comunitat Valenciana Ricardo
Tormo in Cheste. This modern racing circuit plays host to the final of the annual
World Motorcycle Championships where direct income figures of over 45 million
euros and records of 200,000 spectators have been registered.

“El acuerdo es por los próximos siete años, que serán los primeros de 50 años de
Fórmula 1 en Valencia” con estas palabras el patrón de la Fórmula 1, Bernie Ecclestone
sellaba el acuerdo para que el Gran Premio de Europa de Fórmula 1 se celebrara en la
capital de la Comunitat Valenciana.

comunicada por tierra, mar y aire y que contará con un circuito moderno y espectacular.
El circuito sobre el que se desarrollará el Gran Premio de Europa de Fórmula 1 será
un trazado urbano que recorrerá la marina Juan Carlos I que ha sido la sede de la
32 America’s Cup, la competición náutica más importante del mundo.
El trazado discurrirá también por el área de expansión de la ciudad hacia el puerto y
conectará las grandes avenidas con la zona marítima. Bajo estas premisas se ha creado un
diseño que garantice la seguridad de los participantes, que no suponga grandes molestias
a los ciudadanos y que sea absolutamente sostenible y cuidadoso en su impacto con el
bienestar de los valencianos.
A SPECTACULAR URBAN RACING TRACK
“This seven-year Concessionary Agreement marks the beginning of the first
50 years of Formula I racing in Valencia”. This was, without a doubt, one of the most
important statements made by Mr. Bernie Ecclestone during the signing of the
European Formula I Gran Prix Agreement in Valencia, the capital of the Comunitat
Valenciana.
Valencia is ideal for celebrating this type of macro event. It is an open city, well

circuit.
The street racing circuit built for the 2008 Formula I Gran Prix will start off from
the Juan Carlos I Marine area, home of the headquarters of the recent 32nd America’s
Cup, the most important nautical event in the world.
It continues around the port and through one of the city’s urban areas where it
connects a number of large avenues. This modern street racing circuit has been
designed to guarantee the safety of participants. The circuit designers have also
studied the sustainability of the project and the impact on the daily life of the citizens
of Valencia.

Pese a tratarse de un circuito urbano, sus características, en cuanto a prestaciones y
seguridad, son iguales a las de uno permanente. El Valencia Street Circuit tiene una
longitud de unos cinco kilómetros y medio, el ancho de la pista es al menos de 14 metros,
incluyendo dos bermas de aglomerado asfáltico, idéntico al de la pista, de un metro de
ancho a cada lado. Asimismo, se contemplan amplios espacios de escape en las curvas.
La celebración de este evento es el reconocimiento al intenso trabajo realizado por la
Generalitat para lograr “esta apuesta de futuro sin igual, un proyecto para Valencia, España
y Europa” como indicó en su presentación el Presidente de la Generalitat Valenciana
Francisco Camps.

The safety measures of this modern street circuit are comparable to the safety
measures of a permanent racing circuit. With a length of five-and-a-half kilometres
and a width of 14 meters, it has been equipped with two one-and-a-half meter mixed
asphalt side berms. The asphalt used for these is identical to the type used for the
main circuit. It has also been equipped with a number of escape areas located on
the circuit curves.

What is behind this increase in business initiatives at
Bodegas Murviedro?
The Company’s traditional family spirit remains intact.
We have, however, increased the professionalism of our
management. A decision was taken to concentrate our efforts
on investigating and investing in new products. The result
is a new range of highly competitive wines that are
already receiving excellent reviews on both the national
and international markets. Bodegas Murviedro is a dynamic
company, a company always looking for new ideas.
¿Cómo es eso de crear un vino para mujeres?
El Alba de Murviedro posee una clara inspiración
femenina. Somos conscientes de que el mundo
del vino continúa siendo un tanto machista, aunque
cada vez hay más mujeres especializadas, grandes
bodegueras, enólogas y sumilleres. En el caso
del consumidor, cuando pide un vino, y según un
estudio de mercado realizado, el 80% de las veces
es el hombre quien lo elige y siempre se suele
decantar por un tinto cuando, también según este
estudio, la mayoría de mujeres optaría por un
blanco. Lo que hemos hecho con el Alba es crear
un vino blanco con las características por las que
se suelen sentir atraídas las mujeres.
What made you decide to create a special wine for women?
Yes, our new Alba de Murviedro has clearly been inspired by
women. Our Company is aware that there is a certain amount
of chauvinism in the wine industry, although it is also true that
there are gradually more and more female wine specialists,
bodega owners, oenologists and sommeliers. However, market
studies show that 80% of the time, it is the man who chooses
the wine. Men have a strong tendency towards red wine. The
same market studies show that the majority of women would,
given the choice, opt for white wine. All we have done is
create a white wine with the characteristics we consider
attractive to women.
¿Qué otros vinos podemos destacar de la nueva
gama Murviedro?
En septiembre saldrá el primer vino de una trilogía
interesante, la Cueva de la Culpa, Pecado y Perdón.
Pensamos que son unos vinos adecuados para
el consumidor al que le gusta innovar y probar
nuevas opciones. También es destacable nuestro
Reserva que con el nuevo coupage, que incluye
Shiraz, ha obtenido la gran medalla de oro, uno de
los premios más prestigiosos del Concurso Internacional de Bruselas.
What other Murviedro wines do you feel are worth a mention?
We shall, in September, be introducing the first of an interesting
trilogy of wines: the Cueva de la Culpa, Pecado y Perdon (the
Cave of Guilt, Sin and Pardon). These new wines are, in our
opinion, ideal for consumers who like to innovate and try
something new. Also worth mentioning is our new Reserve
wine which, with its new ‘coupage’ (mixture of wines), that
includes, amongst others, Shiraz, has been awarded a gold
medal in the Brussels International Wine Contest, one of the
industry’s most prestigious wine contests.
¿En qué medida influye elegir el vino adecuado
al alimento que estemos tomando?
No existen reglas fijas y es bueno experimentar
sin prejuicios. En el mundo del maridaje existen
pescados que pueden maridar bien con vinos
tintos (atún con la variedad Merlot, por ejemplo),
y también combinaciones que sorprenden al contrario (queso de cabra con la variedad Sauvignon
Blanc, por ejemplo). Cada vez hay más gente interesada en saber cómo combinar alimentos con el
vino adecuado o cómo se cata un vino y esto es
algo por lo que nos tenemos que felicitar todos los
que hemos hecho del placer una profesión.
How important is it to choose the right wine for the right
occasion?
There are no fixed rules; it really is a good idea to experiment.
In the world of food and wine combinations, it is possible to
find fish dishes that combine well with red wines such as tuna
fish with wines made from the Merlot grape variety for
example and others, to the contrary, such as goat’s milk
cheese with wine made from the Sauvignon Blanc grape
variety. The number of people interested in learning how to
combine food and wine or practise the art of wine tasting is
on the increase. We consider this an authentic pat on the back
for those of us who have made a profession out of pleasure.

has followed the trends of modern day living without renouncing its deep-rooted
traditions and customs. A magnificent city that has managed to skilfully combine a
first-rate cultural agenda with a heterogeneous recreational and gastronomic offer

With this in mind, we are sure the reader will not be surprised to read that the capital
of La Rioja is home, on the one hand, of a number of expensive restaurants guaranteed
to satisfy the palate of the most demanding gourmet and, on the other hand, home of
a wide variety of local bars, cafes and taverns, the majority famous for their excellent
family atmosphere. These local establishments are very popular amongst the inhabitants
of this lively city where the popular custom known as “chiquiteo” is maintained. This
custom consists of a tour, similar to a pub crawl, of a number of local bars where
customers are served a variety of exquisite “tapas” (tiny hot and cold snacks) some of
which could be described as authentic works of art. Whatever visitors choose, whether

monumental hallarán en Logroño sorpresas tan gratas como la impresionante Concatedral
de Santa María de la Redonda, con sus grandes torres gemelas levantadas en el XVIII por
Martín de Berriatúa, una profusamente ornamentada fachada principal, un bello retablo
mayor, del XVII, una sillería del coro muy elaborada... sin olvidar la Iglesia de Santa María
de Palacio, templo gótico de tres naves alzado sobre la base de un espacio palaciego
donado por Alfonso VII de Castilla, también conocida como “La Aguja” o “La Imperial”; o
la también gótica Iglesia de Santiago, de nave única y capillas emplazadas entre los contrafuertes que conserva el Archivo de la Ciudad, junto a la que se encuentran la Fuente del

Visitors looking for some fun at night might like to start off at the Market Square,
close to the busy Main Street. This area is famous for the bustling atmosphere of its
entertaining pubs, bars and cafes.
Whilst in Logroño, visitors should not miss the opportunity of visiting the La Rioja
Museum where they will find a wide variety of archaeological, artistic and ethnographic
collections providing a complete historical-cultural tour of the history of this marvellous
region, from ancient times to the present day, and its famous wine producing activities.
As far as scenic arts are concerned, we would suggest visitors visit the splendid Breton
Theatre with its excellent seasonal programmes. Other historical buildings include the
superb Concathedral of Santa Maria de la Redonda with its spectacular twin towers
built during the 18th century by Martin de Berriatua, richly decorated main façade,
striking altarpiece dating back to the 17th century and beautiful choir stalls. Also worth
a mention is the Church of Santa Maria de Palacio, a three nave, Gothic style building,
known as “La Aguja” or “La Imperial”, built on a site donated by King Alfonso VII of
Castile. This building stands out, amongst other things, for its pyramid shaped tower.
Finally, we would mention the Gothic style Church of Santiago with its singular nave
and chapels located between buttresses, home of the City Archives. Other sights to be
found here are the famous Pilgrim’s Fountain and the “Juego de la Oca” (Snakes and
Ladders), two important reference points for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de
Compostela.

Suso and Yuso monasteries situated in San Millan de la Cogolla. These impressive

literary reasons, a World Heritage Site in 1997. The Cathedral of Calahorra, the Cuatro
Torres Castle in Cornago and the Clavijo Castle are also worth visiting. Nature lovers
should not miss a visit to the beautiful Sierra de Cebollera Natural Park, located

area, declared a Specially Protected Area for Birds, full of beech groves, Pyrenean and
Durmast oak groves and large numbers of wild pine, yew and ash trees. Its fauna

INGREDIENTES PARA 4 PERSONAS: Hojas de brick, 4 unidades. Gambas peladas,
400 gr. Aceite de oliva, 2,5 cl. Huevo, 1 unidad. Aceite para freír.
INGREDIENTS FOR 4 PERSONS: 4 brick leafs. 400 gr. prawns. 2.5 centilitres
olive oil. Frying oil.
PARA LA SALSA CHERMOULA: Cilantro fresco, 50 gr. Ajo, 50 gr. Cebollas, 20 gr.
Aceitunas moradas, 100 gr. Comino en polvo, 1/4 de cucharita de café. Pimentón dulce,
1/2 cucharada de café. Aceite de oliva, 10 cl. Sal y pimienta del molino.
CHERMOULA SAUCE: 50 gr. fresh coriander. 50 gr. fresh parsley. 50 gr. garlic.
20 gr. onion. 100 gr. purple olives. 1/4 teaspoon cumin. 1/2 teaspoon paprika.
10 centilitres olive oil. Lemon juice. Freshly ground salt and pepper.
PREPARACIÓN: Preparar la chermoula picando el cilantro, perejil, ajo, aceitunas, añadir
el comino, sal, pimienta y el pimentón. Añadir el zumo y un chorrito de aceite de oliva.
Pelar las gambas, cortarlas a trocitos y mezclar con la chermoula. En una sartén con un
poquito de aceite de oliva, fondear el relleno a fuego vivo hasta que todo esté dorado.
Colocar las hojas de brick una sobre otra, enrollar, cortar en trozos de 4 cm. desenrollar
para obtener cintas, despegar unas de otras. Untar con huevo batido, depositar un poquito
de relleno en cada banda. Enrollar en forma de triángulo alternativamente a derecha e
izquierda hasta acabar la hoja.
PREPARATION: Prepare the Chermoula sauce by chopping the coriander,
parsley, onion, garlic and olives and adding the cumin, paprika, salt and pepper.
Add a little lemon juice and a touch of olive oil. Shell the prawns, dice and add
to the Chermoula sauce mix. Fry the prawns in olive oil in a frying pan until
brown. Place the brick leafs in layers, roll and cut into 4 cm pieces. Unroll and
separate into strips. Brush with beaten egg and place a little prawn filling on
each side of the strips. Fold into triangles working from right to left.
ACABADO Y PRESENTACIÓN: Freír los brickouates en abundante aceite de oliva
refinado hasta dorar, secar en papel. Servir en fuentes o platos adecuados, decorar con
limón confitado, cilantro, acompañar con harisa.
PRESENTATION: Fry the brickouates in abundant olive oil until brown and
remove excess oil. Place the fried brickouates in an oval dish, decorate with
sugared lemon, coriander and accompany with Harisa.

Alicante province, houses an important cultural heritage. As a result,
its Old Town was declared, in 1969, a Historic-Artistic and Monumental
Site. In addition to its magnificent historical monuments, Orihuela also
has a 16 kilometre long coastline, home of a variety of cliff areas, rocky
coves and golden sandy beaches where visitors will be able to enjoy,
amongst other things, a refreshing swim or a relaxing stroll.
CASCO HISTÓRICO Y CONSTRUCCIONES RELIGIOSAS:
UN LEGADO EXCEPCIONAL
La mayoría de las edificaciones que salpican el casco antiguo de la capital de la Vega
Baja del Segura corresponden a los siglos XVIII, XIX y principios del XX, caracterizándose
por un callejero estrecho bastante modificado en sus viales principales en el que destaca
una sucesión de pequeñas plazas y ensanchamientos de calles realizados en el siglo XVIII
con el objetivo de permitir la visión de las fachadas de palacios e iglesias.
La ciudad conserva otras edificaciones de siglos anteriores entre las que despuntan la
Catedral, las iglesias parroquiales de Santas Justa y Rufina, y la de Santiago, así como
varios cubos y lienzos de la muralla.
El espacio catedralicio, de estilo gótico levantino, planta de tres naves, girola y capillas
entre contrafuertes, fue construido sobre la antigua mezquita aljama a finales del siglo XIII,
inicialmente como iglesia parroquial, pasando posteriormente a ser colegiata, finalmente
catedral en 1510 y, definitivamente, a partir de 1564.
THE OLD TOWN AND ITS RELIGIOUS BUILDINGS: AN EXCEPTIONAL LEGACY
The majority of the monumental buildings housed in the Old Town of Orihuela,
capital of the Vega Baja del Seguro district, date back to the 18th and 19th centuries
and beginning of the 20th century. This magnificent area is marked by narrow streets,
charming town squares and a number of streets widened during the 18th century to
increase the view of the façades of its beautiful churches and town mansions.
Visitors will also find here a variety of buildings dating back even further in the
history of Orihuela. These include the Cathedral, the Santa Justa and Santa Rufina
and Santiago Parish churches and its ancient city walls and watchtowers.
The Levante Gothic style Cathedral of Orihuela comprises three naves, an outstanding
apse aisle and buttressed chapels. Built on the site of an ancient mosque at the end of
the 13th century as a parish church, it was later declared a collegiate church and finally
a cathedral in 1510, being officially considered a cathedral as of 1564.
The Parish Church of Santa Justa and Santa Rufina with its baroque style
architecture dating back to the period between the 13th and 16th centuries was also
built on the site of an ancient mosque. Santa Justa and Santa Rufina are the patron
saints of Orihuela. The martyrdom of these two local saints coincides with the
“Reconquest” of Orihuela that took place on 17th July, 1243.
The Parish Church of Santiago, built during the 15th century on the site of another
ancient mosque, stands out, amongst other things, for its numerous treasures.

La Iglesia Parroquial de las Santas Justa y Rufina, obra gótica con añadidos renacentistas y barrocos, fue alzada sobre una de las mezquitas de la urbe islámica, siendo sus
santas titulares las patronas de la localidad ya que, la celebración de su martirio, coincide
con la “Reconquista” de la ciudad acontecida, según la tradición, el 17 de julio de 1243.
De la Iglesia Parroquial de Santiago, erigida en el siglo XV también sobre una de
las mezquitas islámicas, despunta su conjunto de obras, principalmente de orfebrería, en
la actualidad no expuestas al público, entre las que podemos citar un cáliz gótico; una
cruz procesional de plata dorada; un lignum crucis, del siglo XVI; el cáliz de Fernando Martínez
en plata sobredorada, oro y brillantes, y un crucificado de marfil, anónimo italiano del XVIII.
Otros emplazamientos relevantes son el Castillo de la Alcazaba, al norte de la metrópoli,
en la zona más elevada del monte de San Miguel; el Colegio de Santo Domingo, y los
Palacios Episcopal y de Rubalcava.
El Colegio de Santo Domingo, cuyas obras comenzaron en 1553 y concluyeron a
mediados del siglo XVIII, despunta por dependencias y elementos tan espectaculares
como, entre otros, su fachada sur o principal, de marcada horizontalidad, interrumpida
únicamente por las ventanas y las tres portadas de acceso correspondientes a la Iglesia, al
Convento y a la Universidad; el renacentista Claustro del Convento y el barroco de la
Universidad; su iglesia, obra de Pedro Quintana, o su Torre, ornamentada con ángeles,
humanoides sobre aves y heráldica.
El Palacio Episcopal, sobre el solar del antiguo hospital del Corpus Christi, fue recientemente restaurado con motivo de la exposición “La luz de las imágenes. Semblantes de la
vida”, mientras que el Palacio de Rubalcava, que alberga desde 1981 la Oficina Municipal
de Turismo, se distingue por su intenso uso social y cultural.
CENTROS MUSEÍSTICOS DE GRAN INTERÉS
Otra de las características de la metrópoli alicantina es que se encuentra salpicada por
numerosos museos, entre los que hay que mencionar el Arqueológico de Orihuela, cuyos
fondos atesoran piezas comprendidas cronológicamente entre el Paleolítico y el siglo XVIII,
la mayoría de ellas de origen local o comarcal. A este singular espacio de exhibición se
suman otros tan sugerentes y atractivos como el Museo de la Muralla, el Diocesano de
Arte Sacro, de Semana Santa y el de la Reconquista, sin olvidar el polivalente Teatro Circo,
el espléndido “Rincón Hernandiano” o la emblemática Casa-Museo Miguel Hernández.
Visitors will find a magnificent variety of silverwork on show here that includes a
beautiful Gothic style chalice, a golden silver-plated processional cross, a ‘lignum
crucis’ the Fernando Martinez golden silver-plated chalice with gold and diamond
decorative elements and, finally, an ivory crucifix produced by an anonymous Italian
artist during the 18th century.
Other monuments worth mentioning are the Alcazaba Castle, situated on the
highest point of the town, on the San Miguel mount to be exact, the Colegio de Santo
Domingo and the Episcopal and Rubalcava palaces. Although the construction of the
Colegio de Santo Domingo began in 1553, it was not fully finished until the middle
of the 18th century. This magnificent building stands out, amongst other things, for
a number of architectural elements. These include the beautiful horizontal-shaped
façade with its long line of windows and three main entrance doors to the Convent
church and University, the Renaissance style Convent cloister and the Baroque style
entrance to the University. Finally, we would mention the church designed by Pedro
Quintana and its tower decorated with angels, humanoid figures mounted on birds
and a variety of heraldic elements.
The Episcopal Palace, built on the site of the ancient Corpus Christi Hospital, was
recently restored to house the recent “La luz de las imagenes. Semblantes de la vida”
(The Light of Images. Expressions of Life) Exhibition. The Rubalcava Palace, home
since 1981 of the Municipal Tourism Office, plays host to a wide variety of social
and cultural events.
INTERESTING MUSEUMS
Orihuela is also home of an excellent variety of interesting museums. Worth
mentioning, amongst others, is the magnificent Orihuela Archaeological Museum
with its impressive exhibits dating from the Palaeolithic Era to the 18th century. A
large number of the above-mentioned exhibits were discovered in and around the
municipality of Orihuela. Visitors will also find here a number of other attractive
museums such as the Museo de la Muralla together with the Holy Art, the Holy Week
and the Reconquest museums. Finally, visitors should not miss the versatile Circus
Theatre, the splendid “Rincon Hernandiano” and the emblematic Casa-Museo Miguel
Hernandez.

MÚLTIPLES TESOROS
La geomorfología, la vegetación y la fauna de las Islas Columbretes están absolutamente
modeladas por la acción del mar. El otro factor que influye en la flora y la fauna del archipiélago es su aislamiento.
Al estar alejadas de la tierra más próxima, las poblaciones vegetales y animales insulares
se han ido diferenciando de aquellas que las originaron, evolucionando hasta dar como
resultado especies y subespecies endémicas que sólo pueden encontrarse en Columbretes.
La riqueza natural de este grupo de islas no lo determina un solo aspecto. Por el
contrario, son muchos los tesoros que alberga el archipiélago. Su importancia viene dada
por su interés geológico, debido al particular tipo de vulcanismo que dio lugar a su origen,
pero también por sus importantes colonias de aves marinas.
Seis de las ocho especies de estas aves que nidifican en el Mediterráneo se encuentran
en Columbretes. Aves como la gaviota de Audouin, la pardela cenicienta, el halcón de
Eleonor y el cormorán moñudo, todas ellas especies en peligro de extinción en el
Mediterráneo Occidental, encuentran en estas islas el único punto de nidificación de la
Comunitat Valenciana.
Durante los pasos migratorios primaverales y otoñales, las islas, ancladas en medio del
mar, actúan como un imán para todas las aves que cruzan el mar Mediterráneo entre
Europa y África, concentrándose un alto número de ellas que buscan reposar y tomar
fuerza antes de continuar su largo viaje.
Entre los animales terrestres destaca, sobre todo, el grupo de los artrópodos con diez
especies de insectos endémicos. Pero el premio a la singularidad se lo lleva la lagartija de
Columbretes, conocida así porque éste es el único lugar del Planeta Tierra en el que reside.
El interés de las islas no acaba con la llegada de la línea de agua, sino que se multiplica
cuando nos sumergimos en sus fondos marinos, repletos de escollos, bancos y bajos que
sirven de refugio para muchísimas especies marinas.
MULTIPLE TREASURES
The geomorphology, vegetation and animal species of the Columbretes Isles
depends entirely on its surroundings. Another important factor affecting the flora
and fauna is the isolation of this ancient archipelago.
The vegetation and animal species have, due to the above-mentioned isolation,
evolved in different ways creating, over the centuries, a number of endemic
species and subspecies that can only be found on the Columbretes archipelago.
The natural heritage of this group of islands is not, however, determined by
just one aspect. To the contrary, the Columbretes Isles houses a wide variety of
treasures that stand out, above all, for their great geological value thanks to the
volcanic activity that created these islands. The area also stands out for its
important sea bird colonies.
Six of the eight bird species known to nest in the Mediterranean can be found
here. Species such as the Audouin seagull, Cori’s shearwater, Eleonora’s falcon
and the shag, all in danger of extinction on the western part of the Mediterranean,
use the islands as a nesting area.
During the spring and autumn migratory periods, the Columbretes Isles,
situated in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, attract flocks of birds migrating
between Europe and Africa. Large numbers of these can be found resting on the
Columbretes Isles before continuing their journey.
We would mention, amongst other animal species, a total of ten endemic insect
species. The prize for singularity, however, goes to the Columbretes wall lizard.
This is the only place in the world this lizard species can be found.
‘Illa Grossa, la Ferrera, la Foradada y el Carallot. Éstos son los nombres de las cuatro
islas mayores que conforman el archipiélago de Columbretes. Se trata de uno de los
22 Parques Naturales que existen en la Comunitat Valenciana y es, sin duda, el más espectacular por su singularidad.
Y es que, apenas 30 millas, es decir, unos 56 kilómetros separan este paraíso natural de
la costa de Castellón, por lo que son muchas las personas a las que les gustaría visitarlo.
De hecho, las Islas Columbretes es el Parque Natural de la Comunitat que más gente
querría conocer, según un estudio de la Generalitat, aunque desde 2005 se aplica un
número máximo de visitas diarias para no provocar impactos sobre el espacio natural,
como molestias a la fauna.
Los meses de julio y agosto son, con diferencia, los de mayor volumen de recepción diaria
de visitantes. La media en esta época es de 60 personas al día repartidas en grupos de unas
10 personas, aunque se eleva a 80 durante los días festivos de estos meses de verano.
Los fondos marinos de las Islas Columbretes, situados a unos 80 metros, son un
maravilloso reclamo para aquellos a los que les gusta practicar el buceo. Así, son muchas
las embarcaciones de recreo que visitan las islas, con el permiso previo de la Conselleria
de Medio Ambiente.
’Illa Grossa, Ferrera, Foradada and Carallot are the names of the largest islands
comprising the Columbretes archipelago. The exceptional Columbretes Isles
Natural Park forms part of the Comunitat Valenciana natural park network made
up of some 22 parks. It is, thanks to its singularity, considered one of Spain’s
most spectacular nature areas.
As mentioned previously, a mere 30 miles, some 56 kilometres, separate
this natural paradise from the coast of Castellon, turning it into a popular tourist
destination. In fact, the Columbretes Isles Natural Park is, according to a study
made by the Generalitat Valenciana (Valencia Regional Government), at the
top of the list of Castellon’s tourist destinations. Unfortunately, the Generalitat
Valenciana has, since 2005, had to restrict the number of visitors here in order
to protect its unique flora and fauna.

Estas islas presentan las condiciones idóneas para la supervivencia de la tortuga boba,
en peligro de extinción, por lo que la Conselleria de Medio Ambiente realiza reintroducciones de esta especie en la zona.
Los fondos de Columbretes resaltan, además de por su riqueza en especies animales,
por albergar rarezas como el coral rojo o el alga laminaria redriguezi, muy escasa en el mar
Mediterráneo.
XX ANIVERSARIO
La Conselleria de Medio Ambiente, Agua, Urbanismo y Vivienda, a través de la dirección del
Parque Natural de las Islas Columbretes, ha organizado un completo programa de actividades
para celebrar los 20 años de protección de este emblemático espacio natural castellonense.
Durante 2008 se celebrarán exposiciones, concursos, excursiones al archipiélago,
coloquios, mesas redondas y la publicación de un libro-guía del Parque Natural, entre
otras actividades.
The interest for the Columbretes Isles increases greatly when its wide variety
of marine species are mentioned. Here visitors will find a seabed full of reefs,
sandbanks and shallows that provide excellent refuge for a large variety of
interesting animal species.
The Columbretes Isles provides, for example, the perfect environment for
the Loggerhead sea turtle, in real danger of extinction. It is for this reason the
Regional Environmental Department has taken steps to repopulate the area with
a number of these Loggerhead sea turtles.
The magnificent surrounding seabed also stands out for its abundant marine
vegetation. It is home, amongst other things of a singular variety of red coral and
the Laminaria redriguezi algae, very scarce in these parts.
20TH ANNIVERSARY
The Regional Ministry of the Environment has, in collaboration with the
Columbretes Isles Natural Park authorities, organised an important programme
of events to celebrate the 20th anniversary of this emblematic protected nature
area situated off the shores of Castellon.
A number of exhibitions, contests, excursions, debates and workshops have
been organised. We would also mention the publication of a new Columbretes
Isles Natural Park Guidebook.
UN INQUILINO ESPECIAL
La lagartija de Columbretes (Podarcis atrata) es el único vertebrado endémico de
la Comunitat Valenciana, es decir, la distribución mundial de esta especie está limitada a esta Comunidad y más concretamente a las Islas Columbretes.
La lagartija de Columbretes se encuentra entre los vertebrados del mundo con
una menor distribución, ya que vive en apenas 16,7 hectáreas de terreno.
A SPECIAL TENANT
The Columbretes wall lizard (Podarcis atrata) is the only endemic
vertebrate exclusive to the Comunitat Valenciana or, to put it another way,
the Columbretes Isles is the only place in the world where this singular
wall lizard can be found.
This unique wall lizard holds the world record with regard to the size of
its habitat thanks to the fact that it lives within an area of 16.7 hectares.

On-board Service
Iberia Regional AIR NOSTRUM offers its passengers a number of specially
designed menus elaborated with a wide selection of fresh regional products.
The type of on-board service offered depends, in the majority of cases, on the
type of aircraft and, of course, the flight route. The menus on the Company’s
international flights may differ from the menus on its national flights. The type
of aircraft also plays an important role in the type of menus offered. The common
denominator with regard to its menus, however, is their excellent quality.
Iberia Regional AIR NOSTRUM stands out, amongst other things, for the
special attention it gives to its passengers transforming these into the real
protagonists of its flights. Its on-board service includes a free bar service.
Passengers will, upon request, be served the drink of their choice. All drinks are
accompanied by a small packet of nuts.
It is worth noting that Iberia Regional AIR NOSTRUM has, for security reasons,
had to reduce part of its On-board Service on a number of short-range flights in
accordance with present-day flight regulations.

Renaissance Portrait Painting:
During the month of July. This
interesting exhibition is the first
to explore the subject of portrait
painting during the Renaissance
period. The exhibition, comprising
a total of 126 works of art made
up of paintings, sculptures,
cameos, drawings and engravings,
studies fundamental questions
such as form, recollection and
characteristics. It also takes a
look at the type of commissions
received with regard to friendship,
courtship and matrimony. This
outstanding collection of works
includes a number of self portraits
that demonstrate the different
approaches adopted by artists
when confronted with their own
image. The evolution of royal
portrait painting and the physical
and conceptual limitations of
the portrait such as the “counterportrait” or the representation of
the “anti-ideal” constitute other
essential aspects tackled in this
exhibition that brings together
the works of some of the greatest
Renaissance artists.
The Parpallo Art Gallery, Valencia’s
first modern and contemporary
art museum, founded in 1980,
has recently been re-opened
