Exodus, a fundamental experience of vocation
El éxodo, experiencia fundamental de la vocación
The exodus experience is paradigmatic of the Christian life, particularly in
the case of those who have embraced a vocation of special dedication to the
Gospel. This calls for a constantly renewed attitude of conversion and
transformation, an incessant moving forward, a passage from death to life
like that celebrated in every liturgy, an experience of passover. From the
call of Abraham to that of Moses, from Israel’s pilgrim journey through the
desert to the conversion preached by the prophets, up to the missionary
journey of Jesus which culminates in his death and resurrection, vocation is
always a work of God. He leads us beyond our initial situation, frees us from
every enslavement, breaks down our habits and our indifference, and brings
us to the joy of communion with him and with our brothers and sisters.
Responding to God’s call, then, means allowing him to help us leave
ourselves and our false security behind, and to strike out on the path which
leads to Jesus Christ, the origin and destiny of our life and our happiness.
La experiencia del éxodo es paradigma de la vida cristiana, en particular
de quien sigue una vocación de especial dedicación al servicio del
Evangelio. Consiste en una actitud siempre renovada de conversión y
transformación, en un estar siempre en camino, en un pasar de la muerte
a la vida, tal como celebramos en la liturgia: es el dinamismo pascual.
En efecto, desde la llamada de Abrahán a la de Moisés, desde el
peregrinar de Israel por el desierto a la conversión predicada por los
profetas, hasta el viaje misionero de Jesús que culmina en su muerte y
resurrección, la vocación es siempre una acción de Dios que nos hace
salir de nuestra situación inicial, nos libra de toda forma de esclavitud,
nos saca de la rutina y la indiferencia y nos proyecta hacia la alegría de la
comunión con Dios y con los hermanos. Responder a la llamada de Dios,
por tanto, es dejar que él nos haga salir de nuestra falsa estabilidad para
ponernos en camino hacia Jesucristo, principio y fin de nuestra vida y
de nuestra felicidad.
Esta dinámica del éxodo no se refiere sólo a la llamada personal, sino a la
acción misionera y evangelizadora de toda la Iglesia. La Iglesia es
verdaderamente fiel a su Maestro en la medida en que es una Iglesia «en
salida», no preocupada por ella misma, por sus estructuras y sus conquistas, sino más bien capaz de ir, de ponerse en movimiento, de encontrar a
los hijos de Dios en su situación real y de compadecer sus heridas. Dios
sale de sí mismo en una dinámica trinitaria de amor, escucha la miseria
de su pueblo e interviene para librarlo (cf. Ex 3, 7). A esta forma de ser
y de actuar está llamada también la Iglesia: la Iglesia que evangeliza sale
al encuentro del hombre, anuncia la palabra liberadora del Evangelio,
sana con la gracia de Dios las heridas del alma y del cuerpo, socorre a los
pobres y necesitados.
Queridos hermanos y hermanas, este éxodo liberador hacia Cristo y hacia
los hermanos constituye también el camino para la plena comprensión
del hombre y para el crecimiento humano y social en la historia.
Escuchar y acoger la llamada del Señor no es una cuestión privada o
intimista que pueda confundirse con la emoción del momento; es un
compromiso concreto, real y total, que afecta a toda nuestra existencia y
la pone al servicio de la construcción del Reino de Dios en la tierra.
Por eso, la vocación cristiana, radicada en la contemplación del corazón
del Padre, lleva al mismo tiempo al compromiso solidario en favor de la
liberación de los hermanos, sobre todo de los más pobres. El discípulo de
Jesús tiene el corazón abierto a su horizonte sin límites, y su intimidad
con el Señor nunca es una fuga de la vida y del mundo, sino que, al
contrario, «esencialmente se configura como comunión misionera» (Exhort. ap. Evangelii gaudium, 23).
Esta dinámica del éxodo, hacia Dios y hacia el hombre, llena la vida de
alegría y de sentido. Quisiera decírselo especialmente a los más jóvenes
que, también por su edad y por la visión de futuro que se abre ante sus
ojos, saben ser disponibles y generosos. A veces las incógnitas y las
preocupaciones por el futuro y las incertidumbres que afectan a la vida
de cada día amenazan con paralizar su entusiasmo, de frenar sus sueños,
hasta el punto de pensar que no vale la pena comprometerse y que el
Dios de la fe cristiana limita su libertad. En cambio, queridos jóvenes,
no tengáis miedo a salir de vosotros mismos y a poneros en camino.
El Evangelio es la Palabra que libera, transforma y hace más bella
nuestra vida. Qué hermoso es dejarse sorprender por la llamada de Dios,
acoger su Palabra, encauzar los pasos de vuestra vida tras las huellas de
Jesús, en la adoración al misterio divino y en la entrega generosa a los
otros. Vuestra vida será más rica y más alegre cada día. La Virgen María,
modelo de toda vocación, no tuvo miedo a decir su «fiat» a la llamada
del Señor. Ella nos acompaña y nos guía. Con la audacia generosa de la
fe, María cantó la alegría de salir de sí misma y confiar a Dios sus
proyectos de vida. A Ella nos dirigimos para estar plenamente disponibles al designio que Dios tiene para cada uno de nosotros, para que
crezca en nosotros el deseo de salir e ir, con solicitud, al encuentro con
los demás (cf. Lucas 1, 39). Que la Virgen Madre nos proteja e interceda
por todos nosotros.
This exodus process does not regard individuals alone, but the missionary
and evangelizing activity of the whole Church. The Church is faithful to her
Master to the extent that she is a Church which “goes forth”, a Church which
is less concerned about herself, her structures and successes, and more about
her ability to go out and meet God’s children wherever they are, to feel
compassion (com-passio) for their hurt and pain. God goes forth from
himself in a Trinitarian dynamic of love: he hears the cry of his people and
he intervenes to set them free (Ex 3, 7). The Church is called to follow this
way of being and acting. She is meant to be a Church which evangelizes,
goes out to encounter humanity, proclaims the liberating word of the Gospel,
heals people’s spiritual and physical wounds with the grace of God, and
offers relief to the poor and the suffering.
Dear brothers and sisters, this liberating exodus towards Christ and our
brothers and sisters also represents the way for us to fully understand our
common humanity and to foster the historical development of individuals
and societies. To hear and answer the Lord’s call is not a private and
completely personal matter fraught with momentary emotion. Rather, it is
a specific, real and total commitment which embraces the whole of our
existence and sets it at the service of the growth of God’s Kingdom on earth.
The Christian vocation, rooted in the contemplation of the Father’s heart,
thus inspires us to solidarity in bringing liberation to our brothers and sisters,
especially the poorest. A disciple of Jesus has a heart open to his unlimited
horizons, and friendship with the Lord never means flight from this life or
from the world. On the contrary, it involves a profound interplay between
communion and mission (cf. Evangelii Gaudium, 23).
This exodus towards God and others fills our lives with joy and meaning.
I wish to state this clearly to the young, whose youth and openness to the
future makes them open-hearted and generous. At times uncertainty, worries
about the future and the problems they daily encounter can risk paralyzing
their youthful enthusiasm and shattering their dreams, to the point where they
can think that it is not worth the effort to get involved, that the God of the
Christian faith is somehow a limit on their freedom. Dear young friends,
never be afraid to go out from yourselves and begin the journey! The Gospel
is the message which brings freedom to our lives; it transforms them and
makes them all the more beautiful. How wonderful it is to be surprised by
God’s call, to embrace his word, and to walk in the footsteps of Jesus, in
adoration of the divine mystery and in generous service to our neighbors!
Your life will become richer and more joyful each day!
The Virgin Mary, model of every vocation, did not fear to utter her “fiat” in
response to the Lord’s call. She is at our side and she guides us. With the
generous courage born of faith, Mary sang of the joy of leaving herself
behind and entrusting to God the plans she had for her life. Let us turn to
her, so that we may be completely open to what God has planned for each
one of us, so that we can grow in the desire to go out with tender concern
towards others (cf. Luke 1, 39). May the Virgin Mary protect and intercede
for us all.

La parroquia Nuestra Señora de los Dolores, con María, Madre de Jesús, Mujer de fe y perseverancia, busca vivir plenamente como
miembros de la Iglesia y seguidores de Jesús. Nuestra vida como comunidad creciente de adoración, de la palabra y de servicio fluye de
nuestra celebración de la Eucaristía. La herencia de laicos dedicados en compañía de nuestros sacerdotes y religiosos hace que nuestro
llamado al discipulado sea de servicio, corresponsabilidad y evangelización. Nuestra diversidad cultural trae riqueza y vitalidad a nuestra
vida de sacramento y oración.
