It takes place on the fourth Thursday in November. Across the country, families come together. People prepare a special meal. People say thank you. 1 The Thanksgiving tradition began long ago. The Pilgrims left England in the early 1600s. In England, they could not pray the way they wanted. The Pilgrims sailed across the ocean on ships. It was a long, hard trip. Finally, they landed in America. They settled in Massachusetts. 1 At first life was hard for the Pilgrims. The winter was cold. They ran out of food. Some Pilgrims died. They needed help. Many Native Americans lived in America. They had lived here for thousands of years. The Native Americans knew about local foods. They helped the Pilgrims. They showed them what to eat. They showed them corn and pumpkins. Those vegetables come from America. 2 The Pilgrims were thankful. They celebrated with the Native Americans. They had a big feast. They were thankful for the food. They were thankful for the help of the Native Americans. And they were thankful that they could pray freely. 2 Today on Thanksgiving, Americans make their own feasts. We eat foods that come from America. Some examples are turkey, cranberries, and sweet potatoes. Thanksgiving is a day spent with family and friends. Each Thanksgiving in New York City, there is a big parade. Many people go to watch the parade. Others watch it on television. There are marching bands and giant balloons. It is a celebration. 3 3 Americans come from many lands. Just like the Pilgrims, people still come to America to make a new life. Families celebrate Thanksgiving to say thank you. They say thank you for their families. They say thank you for their food. And they say thank you for living in a free country. T Every February, Americans celebrate Presidents’ Day. The holiday falls on the third Monday in February. Many offices and schools are closed. People take the day off. We honor our presidents. Why is the holiday in February? 1 Presidents’ Day is in February because of two important presidents. Both presidents were born in February. George Washington was the first president. His birthday was on February 22. Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president. His birthday was on February 12. 1 Who was George Washington? 2 George Washington was a general in the Revolutionary War. In that war, colonists fought the English. They didn’t want to follow England’s laws. They thought they were unfair. They didn’t like having a king. They wanted to make their own country. Washington’s soldiers were brave. They won the war. The United States of America was born. Washington was a great leader. He helped create the new country. Everyone agreed that he should be the first president. But he was not a king. He was elected by the people. That means the people chose him. In America, we choose our leaders. 2 Who was Abraham Lincoln? 3 Abraham Lincoln was also a great leader. When he was president, there was a war. The country almost broke apart. Some states allowed people to own slaves. A slave is a person forced to work without pay. Other states did not allow it. The country could not agree. The states went to war against each other. This was called the Civil War. Lincoln believed that all people should be free. He didn’t want the country to break apart. He freed the slaves. He kept the country together. 3 Why do we celebrate Presidents’ Day? On Presidents’ Day, we remember Washington and Lincoln. Without them, our country would not be the same. We also honor all of our presidents. Americans vote for a president every four years. The presidents of the United States are important. They lead the people. They represent freedom. On Presidents’ Day, we remember them.
