A Message from Principal Grenda
Greetings. I hope this month's communication finds
everybody doing well. This Prinicipal's Message
brings with it some great news! February often
brings with it some terrible weather and this year it
still holds true. Although it has been rough, I
wanted to thank all of our AJK parents for the
tremendous effort you have put forth in regards to
getting your children to school. For five weeks in a
row, AJK has had the best attendance in the
District! I am thrilled that during these most
difficult weeks, we have been able to hold on to the
number one spot. Way to go AJK parents! Keep up
the great work.
I also wanted to take a moment to highlight our
students and staff here at AJK. As you all know, we
have a Commitment to Community piece within
our four core values and it is important that our
Cadets, Squires and Sentinels understand that we
need to give and help out those who are less
fortunate. In three weeks, AJK has raised $2,388.00
for the Lukemia/Lymphoma Society and will help
children with these rare blood diseases within our
own county. I am so proud of Our House as they
have truly shown a strong component to
Knighthood. Thanks to all of you who participated
in this venture.
Un Mensaje del Director Grenda
Saludos. Espero que la nota de comunicación de
este mes encuentre a todos bien. Este “Mensaje
del Director” trae consigo una gran noticia. El mes
de Febrero a menudo trae consigo un tiempo
terrible, y este año siguio siendo cierto. A pesar de
que ha sido duro, quería darle las gracias a todos
nuestros padres de AJK por el tremendo esfuerzo
que han puesto adelante en lo que respecta a traer
sus hijos a la escuela. Durante cinco semanas
seguidas, AJK ha tenido la mejor asistencia en el
Distrito! Estoy encantado de que durante estas
semanas más difíciles, hemos sido capaces de
mantenerse en el puesto número uno. Así se hace
padres AJK! Sigan con el buen trabajo.
También quería tomar un momento para destacar
nuestros estudiantes y personal aquí en AJK. Como
todos ustedes saben, tenemos un “Compromiso
con la Comunidad” en nuestros cuatro valores
fundamentales y es importante que nuestros
cadetes, Squires y Centinelas entiendan que
tenemos que dar y ayudar a aquellos que son
menos afortunados. En tres semanas, AJK ha
recaudado $2,388.00 para la sociedad
de
“Lukemia/Lymphoma Society” y ayudará a los niños
con estas enfermedades de la sangre poco
comunes en nuestro propio condado. Estoy muy
orgulloso de Nuestra Casa, ya que han demostrado
ser realmente un componente fuerte de Caballería.

Family Fun
On February 24, North Chicago Community Partners (NCCP) hosted a Family STEM
Night at A.J. Katzenmaier School and Yeager Elementary School. The event was
designed to introduce students to concepts and terminology used in the fields of
science, technology, engineering and mathematics in a fun and creative way. The
events were a great success with nearly 150 guests at AJK and 115 in attendance at
Yeager. The students and parents joined NCCP employees, teachers and more than 50
volunteers from AbbVie to participate in a series of hands-on experiments that were
completed by using common household materials. Participants were all smiles as the
night concluded – with parents and students alike appreciating each of the activities
provided.

Diversion Familiar
El martes, 24 de febrero, North Chicago Community Partners (NCCP) organizó una noche familiar
de “STEM” en las escuelas primarias AJ Katzenmaier y Yeager. El evento fue diseñado para
introducir a los estudiantes a los conceptos y la terminología utilizada en los campos de la ciencia,
la tecnología, la ingeniería y las matemáticas de una manera divertida y creativa. Los eventos
fueron un gran éxito con cerca de 150 invitados a AJK y 115 de asistencia a Yeager. Los estudiantes
y padres de familia se unieron a los empleados de NCCP, profesores y más de 50 voluntarios de

Lake Forest Academy Field Trip
On February 21, 26 students from the A.J. Katzenmaier School and Yeager Elementary
School After School Enrichment Program’s attended an afternoon trip to Lake Forest
Academy (LFA) for their annual spring musical Grease. Students were treated to
breakfast alongside their LFA buddies participated in hands-on stations focused on
science, lego robotics and character education. Students were thrilled to be given a
backstage tour of the set where they were able to operate the lights, test the sound
board and interact with the stage crew. After the musical, students were able to
participate in a question and answer session with the actors.
Salida a Lake Forest Academy
El sábado, 21 de febrero, 26 estudiantes del programa “After School Enrichment
Program” de las escuelas AJ Katzenmaier y Yaeger asistieron a un viaje por la tarde a la
escuela Lake Forest Academy (LFA) para su musical anual de primavera titulado
“Grease”. Los estudiantes fueron invitados a comer junto a sus amiguitos de LFA y
tuvieron la oportunidad de participar en estaciones de manualidades que se centraron
en la ciencia, robótica con “Legos” y la educación del carácter. Los estudiantes
estuvieron emocionados de haber recibido una gira personal entre bastidores donde
tuvieron la oportunidad de operar las luces, probar la tarjeta de sonido e interactuar
con el equipo que maneja la plataforma. Después del musical, los estudiantes
estuvieron felices de participar en una sesión de preguntas con los actores.
DISTRICT-WIDE UPDATES
A Message for All North Chicago District 187 Families
All year, our students have been working hard to learn and master the New Illinois State
Standards and prepare for the PARCC assessment. In March, our students in third
through ninth grade will take the PARCC Performance-Based Assessment (PBA) for the
first time, and all testing will be done on computers. While it is always challenging to do
something for the first time, we are confident that our students, teachers, and technology
are prepared. For more information on the PARCC Assessment and the New Illinois State
Standards, please look under the “Parent Resources” and “Student Resources” tabs on
our websites.
While PARCC will give us a clear understanding of where our students are performing
academically, we also need to look at other measures of how our schools are doing and
how we can improve. Parent voices are extremely important to us, and we would like to
encourage each of you to complete the Illinois 5 Essentials Survey by visiting this link:

Preschool Expansion in
North Chicago

On December 10 , North Chicago CUSD 187
received the exciting news that it had been
selected as one of the 18 communities across
the state of Illinois for a federal Preschool
Expansion Grant. The grant is part of a U.S.
Department of Education funding initiative
designed to implement and expand preschool
programs.
Our District will be awarded
$800,000 per year for the next four years,
allowing us to provide high-quality, full-day
prekindergarten slots for North Chicago’s most
at-risk 4-year olds beginning in the 2015-2016
school year. The district will utilize these grant
funds in conjunction with existing preschool
funding sources to expand, enhance, and
coordinate services for the youngest members
of the North Chicago community. This work will
lay the foundation for an educational system
that supports children from birth through early
adulthood, or from “cradle to career”. The
location for an early childhood education
center has not been finalized, but will be
equipped with developmentally appropriate
infant/toddler and preschool classrooms,
outdoor play spaces, high-quality curricular
resources, a multipurpose room for indoor
gross motor, and areas for student assessment,
screening, and parent/family resources. Spread

Expansión de Pre-Kínder en
North Chicago
El 10 de Diciembre, CUSD 187 de North Chicago
recibió emocionantes noticias que ha sido
seleccionado como una de 18 comunidades a
través del estado de Illinois para una beca federal
para Expansión de Pre-Kínder. La beca es parte de
la iniciativa de parte del Departamento de
Educación de los E.U. diseñada para implementar
y expandir los programas de pre-kínder. Nuestro
distrito recibirá $800,000 cada ano por los
próximos cuatro años que nos permitirá proveer
pre-kínder de todo el día y de alta calidad para los
niños de cuatro años y de alto riesgo comenzando
el año escolar 2015-2016. El distrito utilizara estos
fondos con los recursos de pre-kínder existentes
para expandir, mejorar y coordinar servicios para
los miembros más pequeños de la comunidad de
North Chicago. Este trabajo será el fundamento
para un sistema de educación que apoya a los
niños desde nacimiento a adolescencia o de “cuna
a carrera.” El local para este centro de educación
para edad temprana no se ha finalizado pero será
equipada con salones apropiados para el
desarrollo de infantes, centros de juego afuera,
recursos para currículo de alta calidad, un cuarto
de multi-uso para hacer ejercicios y áreas para
evaluaciones, exámenes y recursos para
