18th Sunday in Ordinary Time
PASTOR’S POTPOURRI –HUNGER AND THIRST
When you are hungry, you have something to eat. When you are thirsty, there’s something to drink. That’s not the world
we live in, however. In the world, one out of eight people on the planet today is undernourished. That’s 870 million
people, roughly two and a half times the population of the United States. Imagine two-and-a-half countries like this one
full of people suffering from want of food. A lot of them are children: 1.5 million will die of hunger this year. Even those
children wo don’t die will spend 160 days a year being sick. That’s five months. How much can a child learn if he or she is sick for
five months every year? And the list can go on.
Because of these statistics are so alarming, we’re drive to consider that perhaps nothing can be done about it; there are just too many
people and not enough food. Yet that is not true. Every reliable organization analyzing global resources says that world produces
enough food right now to feed everyone. That’s right: there is enough food for everyone. The two reasons certain people don’t get
enough are because of land and income. Their land is poor – or they are too poor to acquire land. The bottom line is poverty.
People starve by tens of thousands every day because they are poor.
God created a world in which all who are thirsty could come to the water. God’s had opens and the desires of every human being are
addressed. But many are still waiting for their share – not a banquet, just enough food to feed their children, their elders, their expectant mothers, their breadwinners. How much food do you have in your cupboards, refrigerators, freezers right now? Enough to
make it through the week? A month?
Jesus looks over the hungry crowds and is moved with pity. And what does he say? “Give them some food yourselves.” May we
take care of those whom we know and those we don’t by looking at the need and responding.
Msgr. Bob
(Excerpts from PREPARE THE WORD, Alice Camille, August 3,2014)
Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
My friends Arline and Bay recently moved into a beautiful assisted living apartment, and Arline can’t believe how
wonderful it is to not be in charge of feeding people anymore.
Most nights of the year, for nearly sixty years, she prepared a beautiful dinner for up to ten people. Of course, as
the kids grew up and moved out of the house the numbers dropped, but as they married and brought the kids over for dinner the table grew
again. Bay helped when he was home, but that’s a lot of potatoes to peel, and Arline is weak with relief (and I’ll guess just a twinge of
melancholy) that she doesn’t have to worry about it anymore.
Every single meal we enjoy represents labor and attention, gift and sacrifice. From the field to the farm to the beehive to the pasture to the
dairy, all creation offers its gift, and then we humans prepare it and put it on the table.
Food is probably the best metaphor for the kingdom, and Jesus uses it often. But it’s his suggestion to the Twelve---Give them some food
yourselves--- that’s the kernel of the story. Whatever your gift is―attentive listening, loving parenting, sacrificial grand parenting, care for
the elderly or for those on the margins in any way―God simply asks that you give it, and then watch it multiply.
This gift of yours is your “sign”, your signature on the world. As Gerhard Lohfink has beautifully written, signs make room for the kingdom of
God, and allow it to grow. In your own unique way you too are feeding the five thousand, and bringing forth the reign of God.
How are you offering your own gifts for God to multiply. Kathy McGovern ©2014 www.thestoryandyou.com

Romanos 8:35, 37-39

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd
The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, for children 3 to 12 years of age, originated in 1954 in
Rome, inspired by the Montessori principles of education. The catechesis soon spread to diverse
social environments an d since 1969 to many different countries and cultures. It has been observed
that children, even from the earliest age, eagerly seek religious experience and find fulfillment in it
only if they are helped to live this experience in its deepest, most essential elements, without any
“childish” overtones. When these conditions are present, young children live their relationship with
God in enchanted wonder and profound joy…
The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is not primarily academic in character. Rather, it seeks to
be an experience of life and an education in faith, through the celebration of encounter with the
Father, in listening to Jesus the one teacher, and in obedience to the Spirit.
In addition to being the K-5 program at St. Clare, CGS is offered to our parish communities three
afternoons a week. Priority is given to returning families.
