mobile dental clinic is ‘a blessing’
Dental care may not be the
highest priority when you have
no insurance and are struggling
just to make ends meet.
On the other hand, avoiding
the dentist can create serious
problems for your overall health
and well being.
Underprivileged and
uninsured residents now can get
the care they need — thanks to
a free mobile dental clinic that
visits Sanford two days every
month.
“It has always been difficult
to meet the dental needs of the
uninsured,” says Marilyn Green,
who coordinates free medical
services locally as executive
director of Helping Hand Clinic.
“This mobile clinic has been a
blessing because the number of
people served has been greatly
increased.”

haven continues path to recovery
HAVEN in Lee County took a big
step toward full recovery when local
volunteers resumed working its 24hour domestic violence hotline.
The outreach for those escaping
domestic abuse and sexual
violence closed its shelter operations
in August after facing increased
expenses and a decline in funding.
Even in its most difficult weeks,
HAVEN continued operating its crisis
hotline, relying on volunteers in
nearby counties to handle after-hours
calls. Now, the 90 calls per month
providing legal advice, food and other
practical assistance.
Having local volunteers on the
crisis hotline also allows HAVEN to
receive more grant funding.
HAVEN’s revitalized hotline is
just one sign the nonprofit continues
on the right track. The nonprofit has
been following a plan by banking
and financial professionals and is
meeting all of its goals on schedule.

tons of food donated during can-paign
Almost three and a half tons
of food — a total of 6,750 pounds,
to be exact — were donated during
The Great Grocery Can-paign ’13,
a massive food drive organized by
the United Way of Lee County.
Other event sponsors included
The Sanford Herald, Sanford Lions
Club and WWGP-WFJA radio.
The second-annual drive began
on the final day of this year’s Lee
Regional Fair with free admission
for anyone contributing five cans of
non-perishable food.
It continued three days later
with a daylong “drive-n-drop”
location at Historic Depot Park in
downtown Sanford.
All food collected during the
drive was distributed to needy
local families by Christians United
Outreach Center and The Salvation
Army — two local nonprofits that
operate emergency pantries.

the perfect year-end gift
It may be hard to believe, but
it’s that time of year again. Festive
decorations are already bringing in the
holiday season and soon the calendar
will be turning a fresh, new year.
This is an important time when
we pause to give thanks for all of
our blessings. Even with some of our
neighbors struggling to get ahead, we
realize how well off we are compared to
many parts of the world.
It’s also a time when you probably

la clínica dental móvil es “una bendición”
El cuidado dental tal vez no
sea la más alta prioridad cuando
una persona no tiene seguro y está
luchando sólo para pagar las deudas.
Por otro lado, evitar al dentista
puede crear serios problemas para la
salud general y el bienestar.
Ahora los residentes de escasos
recursos y sin seguro pueden
conseguir la atención que necesitan
— gracias a una gratis clínica dental
móvil que visita a Sanford dos días
cada mes.
“Siempre ha sido difícil satisfacer

no tienen seguro”, dice Marilyn Green,
quien coordina los servicios médicos

ejecutiva de la Clínica Helping

una bendición porque el número de
personas atendidas ha incrementado
en gran medida.”
