Rodríguez 1 David Diego Rodríguez, Ph.D. University of Illinois at Chicago http://www.uic.edu/~ddr [email protected] Spanish 104 Exam III Study Guide Reflexive Pronouns Singular Plural 1 me nos 2 te os 3 se se A sentence is reflexive (reflexivo) when the subject and the direct object are the same: Yo puedo verme en el espejo. Reflexive pronouns are placed: Before a conjugated verb: Juan se lava las manos. Te ves en el espejo. Attached to the end of an infinitive or present participle: Voy a lavarme las manos. (Me voy a lavar las manos.) Estoy lavándome. (Me estoy lavando.) Attached to end of an affirmative command: Lávate. Aféitate. Before a negative command: No te vayas. No te veas en el espejo. When a sentence contains a reflexive pronoun and a direct object pronoun, they are placed as noted above and the reflexive pronoun is always placed before the direct object pronoun. (The two pronouns must be placed together in the sentence!): Se las lava. Lávatelas. Reciprocal reflexive. The plural reflexive pronouns (nos, os, se) can be used to express mutual or reciprocal actions: Nos escribimos muy a menudo. (We write to each other very often.) Vosotros os veis con frecuencia. (You (familiar plural) see each other a lot.) Van a encontrarse en el bar. (They’re going to meet each other at the bar.) If a sentence may be interpreted as either reflexive or reciprocal then a clarifying phrase is necessary: Leonardo y Estela se miran en el espejo. Leonardo y Estela se miran en el espejo uno a otro. Subjunctive in adjective clauses A clause that describes a preceding noun is called an adjective clause (una cláusula adjectival). Adjective clauses are generally introduced by either que or donde. There are two general rules that determine whether to use the subjunctive or the indicative with adjective clauses. 1. When an adjective clause describes something about which the speaker has knowledge (something specific or that the speaker knows exists), the indicative is used: Leí un libro que trata la igualdad entre los sexos. Busco el restaurante donde comimos el sábado pasado. Hay algunos hombres que se consideran feministas. 2. Use the subjunctive in the adjective clause whenever the main clause indicates that the person or thing mentioned is outside the speaker’s knowledge, experience, or perceived reality. When an adjective clause describes something with which the speaker has had no previous experience, or something that may not exist at all, the subjunctive is used: Busco un libro que trate la igualdad entre los sexos. Busco un restaurante donde vendan comida china y mexicana. No hay ninguna mujer que se considere machista. Rodríguez 2 The speaker chooses either the indicative or the subjunctive in the adjectival clause in order to indicate whether something exists or is known to the speaker: Antecedent certain (Indicative mood) Necesito el libro que tiene información sobre los prejuicios sociales. Elena tiene tres parientes que viven en San José. Conozco a un abogado que es honrado. Yo conozco a alguien que habla diez idiomas. Antecedent uncertain (Subjunctive mood) Necesito un libro que tenga información sobre los prejuicios sociales. Elena no tiene ningún pariente que viva en Limón. Busco un abogado que sea honrado. No conozco a nadie que hable diez idiomas. Por y Para Por and para both mean for in English. However, be careful when choosing between por and para. Por Destination toward, in the direction of Deadline or a specific time in the future by, for Purpose or goal + infinitivo in order to Purpose + noun for, used for Recipient for Comparison with others or opinión for, considering Employment for Mario sale para la clase de español.
