This is the second "Epiphany" or manifestation of God in as many weeks. As Jesus leaves the waters of the Jordan the voice of the Father is heard, "This is my beloved Son," The Lord tells us directly who this Jesus really is: the Son of God. Now when we think about baptism we know it’s a sacrament given to us for the forgiveness of sins. Those who are baptized are washed clean of all sin and are made members of the Church and the Body of Christ. So why would Jesus need to be baptized? The fact of the matter is Jesus did not need to be baptized. He had no sin and he is God himself. He went into the waters of baptism as an example for us to follow. Now most of us were baptized as infants and so our parents and godparents made promises on our behalf. We ourselves renew these promises every Easter. Perhaps today would be a good time to meditate on these promises and ask ourselves, as we begin this new year, if we've been keeping these promises. Do you reject Satan? Sure we do. But we must also do what Eve failed to do. Never talk to the serpent in the first place! Though still a creature like us, he is pure spirit and knows how to tempt us. The best remedy is to simply not listen to his forked-tongue words. And all his works? I think most of us would never willingly cooperate with evil but we do so because we are willful and full of ourselves sometimes. Here's an example: We vote for pro-abortion politicians because life isn't that important to us. In so doing, we cooperate with the evil that is murder. Any time we stand idly by while evil is being done we consent in some way to it. And all his empty promises? His promises are those that are in opposition to The Lord and His Church. Any time we hear ourselves or someone else say, "I know what the Church says, but...." we buy into his empty promises. Not too long ago I was speaking with a Catholic who had a masonic emblem on his car. I asked if he was a Mason and he said yes. I proceeded to explain that no Catholic can be a Mason and receive Holy Communion as they remain in a state of grave sin. His response? "No, it's OK Father. Down at the lodge they told me I could do both!" That's kind of like a married man telling his wife that his girlfriend says it's OK to cheat! Finally, we profess our faith in the living God. For the sake of space in the bulletin I'll ask you to take this to prayer every day this week and meditate on the mysteries herein. Do you believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth? Do you believe in Jesus Christ his only son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; rose from the dead and is seated at the right hand of the Father? Do you believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the Communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting?
