Religious Profession of Vows - Saint Thomas Aquinas Cathedral
Saint Thomas Aquinas July 14, 2013 Cathedral 3 1 0 Wes t 2 n d St R en o NV 8 9 5 0 3 7 7 5/3 2 9 - 2 5 7 1 Religious Profession of Vows This week, Benjamin Gurries, the son of our parishioners Ray and Patti Gurries, will profess first vows as a religious of Siervos del Hogar de la Madre (the Servants of the Home of the Mother), a pious association of the faithful founded in the 1980s in Spain, but now present in Ecuador, Italy and the United States as well. Several of the Gurries have traveled to Spain to be present for Ben’s religious profession. The Hogar is new religious community whose apostolate is dedicated to (1) the conquest o f yo u t h f o r C h r i s t ; ( 2 ) Eucharistic Adoration and (3) and the promotion of devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, especially under her title as the Immaculate Conception. The Hogar is represents a new and vigorous movement in the in the ongoing development of religious life in the Catholic Church. Just as the Franciscans and the Dominicans led the way for religious reform in the Middle Ages, so groups like the Hogar, the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal, the Missionaries of Charity (the sisters of Mother Teresa), the Kolbe Missionaries and many others are reforming the Church and preaching anew the Kingdom of God in our times. Chesterton might almost be talking of young religious like Ben and his fellow seminarians when he says, “Those runners (priests) gather impetus as they run. Ages afterwards they still speak as if something had just happened. They have not lost the speed and momentum of messengers. In the Catholic Church, which is the cohort of the message, there are still those headlong acts of holiness that speak of something rapid and recent; a selfsacrifice that startles the world like a suicide. But it is not a suicide; it is not pessimistic; it is still as optimistic as the Saint Francis of the flowers and birds. It is newer in spirit than the newest schools of thought; and it is almost certainly on the eve of new triumphs. For these men serve a mother who seems to grow more beautiful as new generations rise up and call h e r b l e s s e d . We m i g h t sometimes fancy that the Church grows younger as the world grows old.” Fr Francisco Nahoe OFM Conv Senior Ministry “We Help People…” A SPECIAL OPPORTUNITY Tuesday, July 16th - 1:00 PM The SMC is proud to present Dr. Sina P. Ward, Director of the Sanford Center for Aging at UNR, Dolores Ward, of the Alzheimer's Association, and Greta Engelbrech, of Senior Outreach Services, at our upcoming Lunch and Learn.
