t 34, Nacho Figueras belongs to a select group of
Argentinean polo players who have conquered the world,
and he is undoubtedly one of the most recognizeable faces
of the sport worldwide. How did he get there? Thanks in great part
to his partnership for more than ten years with the universe created
by Ralph Lauren through his label Polo. Figueras tells us that after
horses, his greatest passion is polo: he loves “the nobility, danger and
adrenaline... To this day, it remains a gentleman’s sport.” Husband
to former model and photographer Delfina Blaquier and father of
Hilario, Aurora and Artemio, Figueras talks about his professional
and personal lives, marked by determination, passion and success, in
this interview with in Magazine.
When did you learn to play polo?
“I learned to play with my childhood friend Lucas Monteverde. I
grew up with him, and our parents were friends from school.”
And he got you started in polo?
“We had a little land in 25 de Mayo, next to his family. My
dad played a bit, he liked polo, but he wasn’t very serious. But the
Monteverdes have been polo players for generations. I started to play
with them, so yes, it was thanks to Lucas that I really got started.”
When did you decide that you wanted to play professionally?
“I was 15, and we played in a tournament, La República, which
is held throughout the country, with the final in Palermo. By then I
knew that I was serious about the sport. Living in Buenos Aires made
it harder, because I could only play on weekends. So I decided to go
live in the country.”
At 17, you had the chance to go to Paris to play. What was that
first experience like?
“I was in my last year of high school. Leaving meant being free,
because the invitation was from May to September. I traveled and »

iene 34 años. Pertenece a la pequeña estirpe de polistas
argentinos que conquista el mundo, siendo una de las caras
más visible del deporte a nivel mundial. ¿Qué lo llevó hasta
allí? Su asociación, desde hace más de 10 años, con el universo creado por Ralph Lauren a través de su etiqueta Polo. Figueras señala que
después de los caballos, su mayor pasión es el polo, del cual le fascinan “la nobleza, el peligro y la adrenalina. Al día de hoy, sigue siendo
un deporte de caballeros”, agrega sobre sus grandes pasiones. Casado
con la ex modelo y fotógrafa Delfina Blaquier y padre de Hilario,
Aurora y Artemio, el polista habla de su camino, uno signado por la
determinación, la pasión y el éxito.
¿Con quién aprendiste a jugar al polo?
Aprendí a jugar con Lucas Monteverde. Es el amigo con el que me
crié y nuestros papás eran amigos de la facultad.
¿Gracias a él que empezaste en este deporte?
Nosotros teníamos un campito ahí en 25 de Mayo, al lado del
de su familia. Mi papá taqueaba, le gustaba el polo, pero hasta ahí
nomás. Los Monteverde, en cambio, son generaciones de polo. Yo
empecé con ellos, así que sí: fue gracias a él.
¿A qué edad supiste que querías dedicarte al polo?
A los 15. Jugamos una copa, La República, que se hace en todo el
país y cuya final se juega en Palermo. Ahí me gustó el deporte en serio. Viviendo en Buenos Aires se hacía difícil, porque solo podía jugar
los fines de semana. Entonces, planteé irme a vivir al campo.
A los 17 llegó la oportunidad de irte a jugar a París. ¿Cómo fue
esa primera experiencia?
Estaba en el último año del colegio. Irme significaba quedarme
libre, porque la invitación era de mayo hasta septiembre. Viajé, di libre las materias de quinto año y terminé el colegio. Fue espectacular,
vivir en París solo me hizo madurar de golpe. »

Luego de París, vinieron experiencias en Atlanta, Madrid y, en
1999, la invitación de Mariano Aguerre a jugar en Bridgehampton, Nueva York. ¿Qué recuerdas de esos años?
En París jugué tres años, me hizo progresar rápido en el deporte.
En 1997 fui por primera vez a Estados Unidos, que es el país que me
abrió la cabeza. Ahí aprendí la idiosincrasia norteamericana, el American Dream. Después me tocaron dos años en Madrid y en 1999,
Bridgehampton, que fue el lugar donde conocí gente muy importante, como Ralph Lauren.
Desde hace 11 años, eres cara de la línea de ropa Polo y de la
familia de fragancias World of Polo de Ralph Lauren. La leyenda
indica que primero conociste al fotógrafo Bruce Weber y fue éste
quien te presentó a Ralph Lauren. ¿Es cierto?
Sí, es correcto. En esa comida a Bruce le pareció interesante que
Ralph me conociera. Creía que podíamos llegar a hacer algo juntos.
Así que fui a conocer a Ralph y aquí estamos.
¿Qué edad tenías en ese entonces?
Tenía 23.
¿Y cómo fue la reunión con Ralph Lauren? Porque es uno de los
grandes nombres de la moda a nivel global…
La verdad es que fue de lo más casual. No fue un examen. Es de
esas personas que te hacen sentir especial y que cuando las conocés,
sabés que son distintas.
En estos 11 años de trabajo junto con ellos, ¿qué aprendiste de
Lauren y de Weber?
Que, independientemente de los genios que son, el 98 por ciento
de todo es trabajo. Son talentosos, son diferentes, pero lo que más
llama la atención de ellos es el trabajo y la dedicación.
Eres cara de las fragancias Polo Green, Polo Blue y Polo Black
y a partir de 2011, junto con tu mujer Delfina, protagonizan la
nueva campaña de Romance. En el clip se los ve muy genuinos,
¿cuánto hay de su vida real como pareja?
Lo de Romance fue increíble porque incorpora la parte más
importante de mi vida, que es mi familia. La campaña fue filmada
en el campo en el que nos casamos, con nuestros hijos, con nuestros
caballos y con nuestros perros. Ser ejemplo de un auténtico love story
fue todo un honor para nosotros.
Hablando de tus hijos, Hilario, el mayor, ya tiene 11 y juega al
polo. ¿Es un deseo que siga tus pasos?
Tiene nuestro consentimiento para hacer lo que a él más le gusta.
Tiene condiciones y todas las herramientas necesarias para jugar al
polo. A mí me encantaría y lo incentivo, por supuesto, pero si dentro
de dos años viene y me dice que en realidad quiere ser violinista, lo
voy a apoyar a muerte. Lo importante es que siga su corazón.
¿Dirías que seguir el propio corazón es el aprendizaje de tu vida?
Sí, porque cuando uno hace lo que realmente quiere y no lo que le
tocó en suerte, ahí se es realmente feliz. in

finished school independantly. It was spectacular. Living in Paris by
myself made me grow up overnight.”
After Paris, came Atlanta, Madrid, and in 1999, Mariano
Aguerre’s invitation to play in Bridgehampton, New York. What do
you remember of those years?
“I played three years in Paris, and I made tremendous progress
in the sport. In 1997, I first went to the U.S., and that country really
opened my mind. There, I learned about the American way of life and
the “American Dream.” Then, I played two years in Madrid, and in
1999, I moved to Bridgehampton, which was where I met some very
important people, including Ralph Lauren.”
For 11 years, you were the face of Ralph Lauren’s Polo clothing
and fragrance lines. Legend has it that you first met photographer
Bruce Weber, and he introduced you to Ralph Lauren. Is that true?
“That’s right. At that dinner party, Bruce decided that Ralph
should meet me. He thought that we could do something together. So
I went to meet Ralph and here we are...”
How old were you then?
“I was 23.”
And how was your meeting with Ralph Lauren? Why is he one
of the biggest names in international fashion...
“The truth is that it was very relaxed. It wasn’t a test. He’s one of
those people who make you feel special, and when you get to know
them, you know that they are different.”
In those 11 years of working with them, what did you learn
from Lauren and Weber?
“That they may be geniuses, but 98 percent of genius is shear hard
work. They are talented, they are different, but what is most striking
about them is their effort and dedication.”
You are the face of the fragrances Polo Green, Polo Blue and
Polo Black, and since 2011, you star in the new campaign for
Romance with your wife Delfina. You both seem to be very genuine
in the clip. Is that how you really are as a couple?
“Romance was amazing because it incorporated the most important
part of my life: my family. The campaign was shot in the field where we
were married, and you see our children, our horses and our dogs. Being
an example of a “true love” story was a great honor for us.”
Speaking of your children, Hilario, the eldest, is already 11,
and he plays polo. Does he want to follow in your footsteps?
“He has our permission to do what he likes the most. He has the
all necessary conditions and tools to play polo. I would love it, and I
encourage him, of course, but if two years from now, he comes and
tells me he really wants to be a violinist, I will support him to the
very end. The important thing is for him to follow his heart.”
Would you say that following your heart is what you learned in
your life?
“Yes. When you do what you really love and not what you were
handed by chance, then you will find true happiness.” in
