gifts of specific items, we request that a donation
be made to a parish memorial fund. The fund
permits the family of the deceased to remember

useful and necessary to the parish.

Dear Friends,
“Enter Through the Narrow Gate”
God’s salvation isn’t just for a few, but for everyone. Luke’s gospel begins with a question from one of Jesus’ listeners: “Lord, will only a few be saved?” The question seems to be about numbers, but his answer is not: “Strive to
enter through the narrow gate.” This narrow gate is restrictive, not in reference to people, but in terms of the
“right” to salvation. It doesn’t come from a mere physical closeness to Jesus. It isn’t enough to have eaten and drunk
with him, or to have listened to him in the public squares. It isn’t the birthright of a specific people, race or culture.
Salvation comes when we accept him and follow him. This is the demanding part, possible with God’s grace.
Thus, the narrow gate becomes a wide-open door, open to all without exclusivity. This is emphasized by Isaiah: “I
come to gather nations of every language.” The narrow gate must be seen in relation with openness to universality, to
all nations, all invited to follow the challenging and hope-filled way of Jesus.
So, who will enter the kingdom? “Living With Christ” tells us: “It isn’t ‘first come, first served.’ It doesn’t matter
who you know. People you never thought had a shot will be sitting in the good seats. It’s a mistake to sit back and
assume anything. The best chance of success is to be humble and serve others, to skip the big main doors, where
everyone will notice your entrance. What really counts is how you treat people, especially those forgotten by the
rest. Yes, it all goes against the rules of success in the world, but isn’t that the whole point of Christianity?

the will of God—is as important as the
monetary gift I offer.
We are grateful this week for all stewards in
our parish who are aware of the activity of the
Holy Spirit in their lives—a new baby, a wedding, a spiritual healing or a moment of deep
insight or conversion—all leading to greater
growth or action on behalf of God’s kingdom!

GRACED MOMENTS
I was watching a mother duck and her nine
little ducklings make their way across the
lake when I noticed that one of the little
ones had become entangled in lily pads.
Although the mother had her back to the
duckling, she instinctively knew that one of
her brood was missing. With her eight
other offspring following her, she quickly
turned back and gently rescued the baby
duckling. As I took in their little drama, I
thought of how the scene reflected God’s
care for us.
When we get caught in the traps of harsh
judgments, resentment and discouragement God does not abandon us, but gently
redirects us so that we might move as one
people. I know all too well that many
things can become more important than
our working together to make God’s
generosity and love manifest in our world.
Graced moments such as the one at the
lake that day help me remain focused on
what is essential no matter what is taking
place around me.

“As you know, there are various reasons why I chose the name of Francis of Assisi, a familiar figure far beyond
the borders of Italy and Europe, even among those who do not profess the Catholic faith. One of the first reasons
was Francis’ love for the poor. How many poor people there still are in the world! And what great suffering they
have to endure! After the example of Francis of Assisi, the Church in every corner of the globe has always tried to
care for and look after those who suffer from want, and I think that in many of your countries you can attest to the
generous activity of Christians who dedicate themselves to helping the sick, orphans, the homeless and all the
marginalized, thus striving to make society more humane and more just.
But there is another form of poverty! It is the spiritual poverty of our time, which afflicts the so-called richer
countries particularly seriously. It is what my much-loved predecessor, Benedict XVI, called the ‘tyranny of relativism’, which makes everyone his own criterion and endangers the coexistence of peoples. And that brings me to
a second reason for my name. Francis of Assisi tells us we should work to build peace. But there is no true peace
without truth! There cannot be true peace if everyone is his own criterion, if everyone can always claim exclusively his own rights, without at the same time caring for the good of others, of everyone, on the basis of the nature that unites every human being on this earth.”

the Archbishop Emeritus of São Paolo …Cardinal Claudio Hummes: a good friend, a good friend! When things
were looking dangerous, he encouraged me. And when the votes reached two thirds, there was the usual applause,
because the Pope had been elected. And he gave me a hug and a kiss, and said: ‘Don't forget the poor!’ And those
words came to me: the poor, the poor. Then, right away, thinking of the poor, I thought of Francis of Assisi. Then
I thought of all the wars, as the votes were still being counted, till the end. Francis is also the man of peace. That
is how the name came into my heart: Francis of Assisi. For me, he is the man of poverty, the man of peace, the
man who loves and protects creation; these days we do not have a very good relationship with creation, do we?
He is the man who gives us this spirit of peace, the poor man .… How I would like a Church which is poor and
for the poor!”

want to improve their English language skills. Many mothers
attend while their children are in school or at a day care program.
The classes are held Monday through Friday
from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.

Mass, members and anyone interested in becoming a member, will enjoy
breakfast at the Terrace Diner in lieu of a regular meeting.

los martes a la oficina de la parroquia. Las clases son
el segundo sábado de cada mes. Y los bautismos son
el tercer sábado de cada mes. En diciembre no
tenemos bautismos.

“ Como ustedes saben, hay varias razones porque Yo escogí el nombre de San Francisco de Asís,
una figura familiar muy lejos de los bordes de Italia y Europa, hasta entre quienes no profesan la
fe Católica. Uno de las primeras razones fue el amor de Francisco por los pobres. Cuanto gente
pobre hay todavía en el mundo! Y que grandes sufrimientos tienen que pasar! Después del ejemplo de San Francisco de Asís, la iglesia en cada lugar del mundo ha siempre intentado asistir y mirar por los que sufren necesidad, y Yo pienso que en muchos de sus países pueden acudir a la actividad generosa de los Cristianos quienes se dedican a ayudar a los enfermos, huérfanos, a los
desamparados y todos los marginados, así esforzándose a hacer una sociedad mas humana y mas
justa.
Pero hay otra forma de pobreza! Es la pobreza espiritual de nuestro tiempo, la cual afecta particular y seriamente a los llamados países mas ricos . Es lo que mi mas amado y anterior modelo, Benedicto XVI lo llamo “egoísmo de la tiranía” , lo que hace a cada uno su propio criterio y ponen en
peligro la existencia de las personas. Y eso me trae a una segunda razón para mi nombre. San
Francisco de Asís nos dice que deberíamos de trabajar para hacer la paz. Pero no hay verdadera
paz sin Verdad! No puede haber paz verdadera si cada uno tiene su propio criterio, si cada uno
siempre reclama exclusivamente sus propios derechos, sin importarle al mismo tiempo el bienestar de los demás, de cada uno, en las bases de la naturaleza de cada ser humano en esta tierra.

Algunas personas desean saber porque el Obispo de Roma quiso ser llamado Francisco. Algunos
pensaron en Francisco Javier, Francisco de Sales, y también Francisco de Asís. Yo les diré la historia. Durante la elección, Yo me senté al lado del Arzobispo de Sao Pablo…Cardenal Claudio Hummes: un buen amigo, a buen amigo! Cuando las cosas parecían peligrosas, el me animo. Y cuando
los votos alcanzaron las dos terceras partes, hubo el aplauso usual, porque el Papa había sido elegido. Y el me dio un abrazo y un beso y dijo: “No olvides los Pobres!” Y esas palabras me llegaron:
La pobreza, Los pobres. Entonces, enseguida, pensé en los pobres, Yo pensé en San Francisco de
Asís. Entonces yo pensé en todas las guerras mientras los votos seguían contándose, hasta el final. Francisco es también un hombre de paz. Así fue como el nombre vino a mi corazón: Francisco
de Asís. Para mi el es el hombre de la pobreza, el hombre de la paz, el hombre que ama y protege
la creación, en estos días no tenemos una buena relación con la creación, o si? El es el hombre
quien nos da este espíritu de paz, el hombre pobre…..¡Como yo quisiera una iglesia pobre y
que trabaje por los pobres!”
