We are committed to following Christ’s example by using our time, talent and resources in reaching out to the poor, feeding the hungry and creating a legacy of faith and hope for future generations. Together, as a parish family, we hope to continue growing in God’s Grace and Love. We ask this through Christ Our Lord, Amen. Saint Anne, Mother of Blessed Virgin Mary, Pray for us. From the Pastor then said to the Twelve, "Do J esus you also want to leave?" Simon Peter answered him, "Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God." These words of today’s gospel have a powerful impact to help deepen our imperfect faith. These words also helped a young Native American girl of the 17th Century, Kateri Tekakwitha. Kateri became converted as a teenager. She was baptized at the age of twenty and incurred the great hostility of her tribe. Although she had to suffer greatly for her faith, she remained firm in it. Kateri went to the new Christian colony of Indians in Canada. Here she lived a life dedicated to prayer, penitential practices, and care for the sick and aged. Every morning, even in bitterest winter, she stood before the chapel door until it opened at four and remained there until after the last Mass. She was devoted to the Eucharist and to Jesus Crucified. She died on April 17, 1680, at the age of twenty-four. She is known as the "Lily of the Mohawks". Devotion to Kateri is responsible for establishing Native American ministries in Catholic Churches all over the United States and Canada. Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha will be canonized on October 21, 2012. The Saturday 5:00 p.m. Mass is an expression of the Native American Culture. News has come from Ireland that Father Malachy’s brother, Father Brian, has died; may he rest in peace. On Thursday, August 30, at 8:00 a.m. there will be a Memorial Mass in honor of Father Brian, followed by light refreshments in the Saint Joachim Hall. Saint Anne Catholic Church I wish all the parish students well as they begin the new school year. Mrs. Cindy Cyman is still searching for teachers and aides for the Faith Formation classes. Deacon Ed Smith and his team have already begun interviews for the adult R.C.I.A. (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) program. The program is designed to educate converts in the Catholic faith and prepare them to receive the sacraments of the Church. The process also helps non-Catholics who are about to marry Catholics, people who were baptized in the Church at birth but never confirmed, and others who have just decided that the Church best fits their beliefs. If you or anyone you know are seeking more information about the Catholic Church, there is still time to join this year’s RCIA program. Yours in Christ, Fr. John Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha O God, who among the many marvels of Your grace in the New World, did cause to blossom on the banks of the Mohawk and St. Lawrence, the pure tender Lily, Kateri Tekakwitha, we thank You that the Lover of Jesus and His Cross is being counted among the Saints by Holy Mother Church. We pray that our hearts may be en-kindled with a strong desire to imitate her innocence and faith, through the same Christ Our Lord. CATECHIST The Diocese offers a Catechist Certification Program for those who serve as parish catechists, RCIA ministers, youth ministry catechists, and other adults serving parishes in catechetical ministry. The intention of this program is to assist the catechist in nurturing a faith-love relationship with God and, in turn, to foster a faith-love relationship with God in those whom they catechize. For more information visit the Diocesan website at: http://home.catholicweb.com/dosp_elff/. Marking the 50th anniversary of the Vatican II, Pope Benedict XVI has declared 2012 as 'The Year of Faith.' He has called upon Catholics to study the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Pillars of Catholicism is a response to the Holy Father's challenge. Students at John Paul the Great Catholic University in San Diego are launching a free online course this month called "Pillars of Catholicism." The free online course is created entirely by students with the oversight of faculty. They have designed the videos, study guides, quizzes, and website to be fun and engaging. Michael, Gabriel and Raphael Page 8 Saint Anne Catholic Church Praying like a Faithful Citizen Our action as faithful citizens should flow from prayer. When we pray, we experience God and we remember that he is in us and in all people, who are created in his image and have inherent dignity. If we want to truly be faithful citizens, we must know how to come to God in prayer, experience God in ourselves and others, and listen to the ways God is calling us to respond. "Responsible citizenship is a virtue, and participation in political life is a moral obligation." -- Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship By our baptism, Catholics are committed to following Jesus Christ and to be "salt for the earth, light for the nations." As the Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds us, "It is necessary that all participate, according to his position and role, in promoting the common good. This is inherent in the dignity of the human person ... As far as possible citizens should take an active part in public life" (nos. 1913-1915). VISIT: Florida Conference of Catholic Bishops www.flaccb.org United States Conference of Catholic Bishops www.usccb.org 9 New Ways to Pray Try out all of these ways to pray as a faithful citizen as well as other creative ideas you might think of. Then try the ones that work best for you again and again – make them a practice in your daily life so that you can be a just pray-er and a faithful citizen! The Newspaper Prayer Look through a print or online newspaper to find a news article about an issue mentioned in Faithful Citizenship. Cut out (or print out) the article and bring it with you to a quiet place where you can pray. Think about how human dignity is affected by the issue or situation. Pray for God’s healing and transformation for all people impacted, lawmakers, and citizens like yourself. Ask God how he is asking you to respond to this issue. Becoming a Character in the Parables Read slowly one of the following Gospel readings: John 5:1-15; Luke 8:40-56; Mark 1:40-45; or Mt. 20:29-34. Then read it again, imagining that you are the character in the story with whom Jesus interacts. Imagine how it would be to be in that character’s place. How do you feel before you meet Jesus? How do you feel physically (what do all five senses experience in that time and place?), emotionally, and spiritually? What happens when you encounter Jesus? What is that experience like? Imagine every detail of the story. Next, imagine the story again in your mind, but this time, substitute a modernday person, for example, someone who is homeless or a person who is sick with cancer but has no health insurance. Let this exercise lead you into prayer for the real people who are suffering in the world. Pray for justice and for realization of your role in making justice a reality.
