THE COSTS OF DISCIPLESHIP
Today’s responsorial psalm, Psalm 40, is
more familiar to us with the refrain “Here am I,
Lord.” This “Here am I” is Jeremiah’s great
prophetic response to God’s call. But today’s
story of Jeremiah and the refrain “Lord, come
to my aid!” remind us that there are always
two sides to following the call of God. The author of the Letter to the Hebrews knew this, too. He reminded his readers that even weighted down with burdens
and sins, we can still persevere by keeping our eyes fixed
on Jesus, who himself knew the shame and pain of the
cross, but saw beyond it to the joy of sitting at the right of
the throne of God. Jesus himself gave the disciples a “sneak
preview” of a baptism that would not be as wondrous as the
one in the Jordan that inaugurated his ministry, but would
be one of fire and anguish. Today’s words from scripture
may not be terribly soothing, but in their honesty and
strength we can acknowledge the difficulties of daily discipleship, and take comfort in the assurance of our own salvation in Christ. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

El Salmo responsorial de hoy, Salmo 40 (39),
nos es muy familiar por el refrán “Señor, date prisa en socorrerme”. La historia de Jeremías hoy y el refrán “¡Señor, date prisa en
socorrerme!” nos recuerda que siempre hay
dos caminos para seguir el llamado de Dios.
El autor de la Carta a los Hebreos también lo sabía. Él recordaba a sus lectores que aunque nos agobien desgracias
y pecados, podemos todavía perseverar si mantenemos
nuestros ojos fijos en Jesús, quien también conoció la vergüenza y el dolor de la cruz, pero vio más allá del sufrimiento, el gozo de sentarse a la derecha del trono de
Dios. Jesús mismo dio a sus discípulos una “idea” de un
bautismo que no sería tan maravilloso como el del Jordán
que inauguró su ministerio, sino de fuego y angustia. Las
palabras de la Sagrada Escritura hoy pueden no ser terriblemente apaciguadoras, pero en su honestidad y fortaleza podemos reconocer las dificultades que el discípulo enfrenta a diario, y consolarnos por la seguridad de nuestra

St. Cyril Bible Study Group
All are welcome to come and enjoy the wonderful St. Cyril
bible study group! This group meets every 2nd Saturday in
the Retreat Room. Martha Valukas is the facilitator. The Navarre Series book, Catholic Letters is the main resource, as
well as the Catechism. The next meeting will be held on Saturday, August 24th after the 8:00 AM Mass. Hope to see you

St. Cyril Young Adult Ministry
Did you ever wonder how scripture began? Are
you between the ages of 21-35? Are you interested in learning more about your faith? Are
you interesting meeting new people? Are you
looking for a way to more involved with your
faith community?

in Dougherty Hall for young adult fellowship.
The first meeting will be a pot-luck-dinner and
planning of future topics and activities. After
the meeting we will attend the 7:00 PM Mass

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is
one of several agencies here in Tucson that supports newly arrived refugees by providing immediate aid, including food and shelter. Through a
network of staff members and volunteers, the
Committee provides access to the tools of selfreliance: housing, job placement and employment skills, clothing, medical attention, education, English-language classes and community
orientation. Each resettlement office serves as a
free, one-stop center for refugees’ needs during
their pivotal first months in the U.S.
In addition to integrating refugees into the U.S.
during their initial period in our country, the
IRC’s refugee resettlement network provides
comprehensive immigration services to assist refugees,
asylees and other immigrants on their path to becoming
permanent residents or U.S. citizens. This assistance is
in two primary ways – English as a Second Language (SEL)
specifically for the immigration test and assistance with the
various steps in the immigration process.
Next Sunday, representatives of IRC will be here in our parish
after the 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM Masses in the North-South
Meeting Room of The Dougherty Activity Building. If you, or
someone you know, is eligible for and/or needs assistance in
becoming a permanent resident or a U.S. citizen, be sure to
stop by and speak with one of the IRC representatives.

Internacional
de
Rescate
[International Rescue Committee (RIC)] es
una de varias agencias en Tucsón que apoyan
a los refugiados recién llegados, proporcionándoles asistencia inmediata que incluye alimentos y hospedaje. A través de una red de personal y voluntarios, el Comité les otorga acceso a las herramientas para su auto-suficiencia:

Marian Shrine Plaza
Construction has Begun
Construction of our Marian Shrine Plaza is
well underway (see the colored design in
the vestibule). We still have many items
available for sponsoring. There are 3 sections of the back wall at $2,000 each,
flower bed seats at $1,000 each, as well as
numerous pavers on the floor of the plaza
(8x8 square pavers to be placed on the
main pathway to the shrine at $250; 8x8
square pavers to be placed at the foot of the flower bed
seating area at $200 each; and 4x8 rectangular pavers to
be placed throughout the plaza at $100). All of these items
will have the name in whose honor/memory the item has
been donated etched into them. To sponsor an item, contact Mary Ann Gielow at our Parish Office.

Adult Confirmation Classes this Fall
This year, Bishop Kicanas is scheduled to celebrate Confirmation in our parish on Tuesday, November 26th. In
preparation for this, we will be offering a preparation series in English for adult Catholics (18 years or older) who
were baptized and have received First Communion but
have not been confirmed. If you haven’t been confirmed,
and would like to celebrate this sacrament, please let Fr.
Edgar know of your interest (795-1633, Ext. 111 or [email protected]). Details will be available in a few weeks.
Sacrament Preparations for Adults
This year our parish will offer a series of classes for Spanish
speaking adults (18 years or older) who have been baptized as
Catholics but have not celebrated one or more of the following
sacraments: First Penance, Confirmation and First Communion.
The preparation series will begin this fall and run through
the spring of 2013
In conjunction with this series, we will also be offering
Spanish speaking couples who are married civilly but not in the
Church, the opportunity to prepare to celebrate the Sacrament
of Matrimony. If one or both of the married couple needs to
celebrate one of the above sacraments in preparation for having their marriage blessed, they should plan on participating in
the above series. More information about the series and how to
register will be in future bulletins, or you can call Deacon Mario
Aguirre at the Parish.

en nuestra parroquia el miércoles, 28 de noviembre.

pero no han sido confirmados. Si usted no está confirmado, y desea celebrar este sacramento, díganselo

Preparación Sacramental para Adultos
Este año nuestra parroquia ofrecerá una serie de clases
para adultos hispanoparlantes (de 18 en adelante) quienes
han sido bautizados como católicos, pero les falta uno o
más de los siguientes sacramentos: primera reconciliación;
comfirmación; primera comunión. Las clases comenzarán
este octoño y terminarán a fines de la primavera de
2014.
Junto con esta serie de clases ofreceremos también, a parejas hispanoparlantes quienes están casados por lo civil mas
no por la iglesia, la oportunidad para preparar para celebrar
el sacramento de matrimonio. Si a uno o a ambos de la
pareja les falta el celebrar uno de los sacramentos mencionados arriba, deben hacer planes de asistir las clases de
preparación sacramental, para que se pueda bendecir el
