What’s On Havana goes on the road this month for our featured event.
We head East to Varadero where the *sand is made of grated silver
mixed with diamond dust for the Montecristo Cup which takes places
from 25-27 April 2013. While golf may ruin a good walk for some we
love the 6,856 yards course which is a beachfront links along a
gorgeous coastline mixed with tropical parkland and Florida lakes
Back in Havana from April 10 to 14th the old city dances. Plazas, parks,
streets, museums and old rambling houses become possessed by the
spirit of dance, which invoked by dancer and choreographer Isabel
Bustos and her company Retazos—Bits and Pieces—turns balconies,
windows, stairs and centenary walls into stages, for the 18th
International Dance Festival in Urban Landscapes Old Havana: City in
Motion.

The Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes is
celebrating its 100th birthday with two
exhibitions related to the anniversary: El Museo
Nacional de Cuba. Orígenes de la colección,
refers to the museum’s first exhibition in 1913
and shows pieces from its present collections
and others which later became part of the
collections of other Havana museums. Hitos.
Crecimiento de la colección de arte en el Museo
Nacional (1913-1963) includes significant
instances in the museum’s life, such as the loan
of artwork by the San Alejandro Art Academy in
1913, the purchase of pieces from the Italian
collector Salvatore Buffardi in 1925, and the
legacy of Rafael Carvajal in 1954. From April 2426, experts will lecture on such topics as
collecting, restoring, education and promotion

FACES OF A CITY

Buildings and people have a strange way of
resembling each other. Some houses are sassy and
coquette like 15-year-old girls, while some are
somber and grave like monks. Many seem to miss the
“good old days” of times gone by with the use of

Festival for Young Film-makers: April 2-7, 2013
Several movie theaters in Havana will host this event which focuses on new young Cuban

Auction of Cuban Photography
(April 7, 2013 – Norwegian Residence)
THE CUBAN MINISTRY OF CULTURE, the National Council of Fine Arts, Fototeca de
Cuba and the Royal Norwegian Embassy, have the pleasure to invite you to an auction of
Cuban Photography. The funds raised at the auction will support the presence of Cuban
artists invited to the International Photography Festival Nordic Light 2013, which will take
place in Kristiansund, Norway, 22nd - 29th of April.
The photographers invited to participate in the festival, Pedro Abascal, Adrián Fernández,
Leysis Quesada and Irolan Maroselli, have each donated four artworks. In addition, a
number of important Cuban photographers have shown their solidarity donating one piece
each. This is a great opportunity to acquire the work of some of the most prominent Cuban
photographers and to help the Fototeca de Cuba with its projects.
The auction will take place at the Residency of the Royal Norwegian Embassy on Sunday
the 7th of April, 2013, between 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm (informal).

The Montecristo Cup Golf Tournament
25-27 April 2013
For Mark Twain, golf was
famously a good walk ruined. For
me I generally feel the same
about golf competitions, why
bother when you can simply play
with friends with a cooler full of
beer when you want with no
stress. Yet since the Montecristo
(and formerly Essencia Cup)
started a few years ago every
April I not only find myself making
the trek out to Varadero but
loving it.
The Varadero course stands at
6,856 yards, has a par of 72 and is
beautifully maintained.
Stylistically think beachfront links
along a gorgeous coastline mixed
with tropical parkland and Florida
lakes. Re-designed by Canadian
les Furber the two loops of nineholes are challenging yet pretty
fair.
The competition itself is well
organized, with good prizes, the
weather at this time of year is
great and with interesting playing
companions, what’s not to like
other than the invariable shank
off the first, slice on the second,
three put on the forth…

Elena's up and downs to dining out in Havana?

During the past month still more paladares have appeared in Havana which continues to keep me
busy. While there is good and bad in all of these, typically the new places are getting better and I found
more ups than downs this month. It is also great to see some of the downs from previous months being
resolved – cheaper wine at Rio Mar being a good example – maybe someone is listening somewhere!
DOWNS:
Waiters’ uniforms at El Asador del Rey
The problem with this paladar for me is not the food, prices or menu but the bad taste of the waitresses’
uniforms. While they seem pleasant enough (albeit not Micheline trained), they appear to have been dressed up
to represent someone’s fantasty waitress. Fish net stockings, a ruffled miniskirt and a bow in the head does
definitely have a place in the world, simply not serving me please! White shirt, black slacks – what more do you
need. Conveniently located in Miramar, El Asador del Rey does prepare excellent meat dishes (think ribs,
steaks, rabbit), and while the garden and decor could do with some work, the prices are reasonable and the
owner is keen to tailor dishes to suit. Worth a look even if it does not beat nearby Dr. Café or Calle 10.

The noise at La Fontana
While I like the Fontana for the excellent food and service, the live music is
simply too loud even if it is is actually quite good. I want to talk at dinner not
listen to a concert. Maybe I am simply getting old or near to deal with my
compulsive talking but this is definitely a down for me. Please turn the
volume down or at least give longer breaks to the musicians.

The chairs at El Madrigal
El Madrigal is the place that everyone (myself included) loves to hate. This
is a beautifully decorated place which attracts a hip and artsy mostly
Cuban crowd and provides my sort of vibe even if the drinks take time to
arrive and the owner seems to delight in insoucience. My down today is all
about the chairs which must have been deliberately designed in some part
of the world for maximum discomfort. Made of wood with a square design
and high arm rests they look comfortable but after a few minutes sitting at
one you will take my point and join the hopping brigade.

Elena's up and downs to dining out in Havana?

Paellas at Mesón de Sancho Panza
Located in Vedado, close to the Havana University this is a handsome
Spanish place with a large outdoor seating area under a covered patio
decorated with plants and a cute fish pond. I recommend the chorizos al
vino or serrano ham as a starter and your pick of the excellent paellas as a
main which comes in various colours including meat, chicken, seafood, and
black (made with squid ink). We ordered the seafood and squid both of
which were great. On top, the prices are reasonable and the waiters are
very friendly. Definitly an “up.”

Chocolate tart and key lime pie at Rio Mar
It was nice to see that Rio Mar had fixed the “down” reported in this column
some months ago and now includes reasonable priced wines in its menu.
We also are happy to report another “up” which we found in our last visit.
That is the desserts, specifically the chocolate tart and the key lime pie;
both are creamy, tasty, not too sweet, beautifully presented and delicious.
Don’t leave without one on your next visit to this very pretty place by the
water.

Chicken Tikka Masala at Bollywood
Since its opening in late 2011 Bollywood has been a breath of fresh air for
the food enthusiasts in the city. The menu has no grilled chicken, pizzas,
pork or but instead Chicken tandoori, curry shrimp, spiced lentils and my
personal favorite, the chicken tikka masala. I like it extra spicy, (still only
luke warm for Mexican standards). The waiters are attentive and friendly
and Cedric, the owner is an absolute doll. It is not cheap but definitely
worth it and the place is cute even if somewhat difficult to find for the first
time. No downs for Bollywood.

Lime and Vodka Tagliatelle at La Guarida
La Guaridad remains the classic, best known, and must-see for any visiting
foodie. The menu is almost an institution in itself so rare are changes made
to it. This shows in the consistency of the food (appeteizers are especially
good, you never go wrong with fish or pork dishes too). The best food for
me, though is the lunchtime freshly made pasta special. I like all four
variants but my favorite has to be the Lime and Vodka Taglietelle which is a
little bit tart with a dash of buttery taste and a large heap of satisfaction.
Take the afternoon off work and try it.
