Did Jesus talk about money? Yes! He did
so all the time, because he saw a love of money
and possessions as a major stumbling block to a
right relationship with God.
In Luke 16 he says “No servant can serve
two masters. Either he will hate one and love the
other, or be devoted to one and despise the
other. You cannot serve both God and mammon.”
In Matthew 19 when the young man asks
what he still lacks in being a disciple, Jesus tells
him: Go, sell what you have and give it to the
poor, and you will have treasure in heaven.
Going back to the Old Testament, read
Malachi 3, where the Lord accuses the people of
robbing him, and asks them to “bring the whole
tithe into the storehouse. . . try me in this, says
the Lord of hosts: Shall I not open for you the
floodgates of heaven, to pour down blessing upon
you without measure? “
Going even further back, in Genesis 28
you have Jacob’s promise to God “of all that you
give me I will give you a tenth”.

A Note from the Pastor
“Many of Jesus’ disciples who were listening
said, ’This saying is hard; who can accept it?’
Since Jesus knew that his disciples were
murmuring about this, he said to them, ‘Does this shock
you? What if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to
where he was before? It is the Spirit that gives life, while the
flesh is of no avail. The words I have spoken to you are Spirit
and life. But there are some of you who do not believe and
the one who would betray him. And he said, ’For this reason
I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is
granted him by my Father.” (John 6:60-69)
John’s Gospel and the words of our Lord
recorded in it force the listener to look beyond the
ordinary, beyond the here and now, and to embrace the
transcendent, to encounter God, who is so much more
than what we see around us in the fallen world. He
who is transcendent, yet eminently present in our
world, yet so much more.
Jesus, as he responds to his congregation of
grumbling disciples, pointedly forces them to reflect
upon Israel’s founding patriarch Jacob. Jacob if you
recall, one day, in a day dream at Bethel had a vision
of Ladder connecting heaven to earth. The Jews of
Jesus’ day knew this story well. It was a story that
gave them hope, that God, by a Son, in the fullness of
time would restore completely his relationship with
wayward humanity. Just as those first disciples who
heard Jesus’ Bread of Life discourse did not get it, so
too, today, many people just don’t get it. They neither
have the eyes of faith to look beyond the here and now
of their given existences, or have hearts open to hope,
to realize that the evil and darkness of this fallen world
is a passing thing.
As post-Resurrection Christians, disciples of
the Lord, we have the great gift of knowledge, the
fullness of the deposit of Revelation as recorded in the
Bible. We have the gift of the Gospels which tell us
the full story of Jesus’ Mission, Passion, Death and
Resurrection. We know the hill known as Bethel, five
kilometers outside of Jerusalem, at which Jacob
decided to lay down and take the nap in which he had
his greatest vision would become over time,
Bethlehem: the village at the foot of the hill in
which God would come to restore his creation,
through his Son, Jesus. We know that Jesus, when
celebrating the Passover with his disciples, picks up
the Passover Bread, and takes it and breaks it,
saying; “Take, eat, this my body.” He was not
doing something casually, but directing his disciples
pointedly how they could continue to routinely
encounter him after his Resurrection. As the great
Belgian Philosopher said; “In God there are no
accidents.” At moments in our life, especially after
encountering evil of some sort, we may lose sight of
this truth. But, God has a plan, and a purpose, his
creation is beautiful and good, and in Jesus, God is
restoring it.
`
So, this Sunday as we bid adieu to the Bread
of Life Discourse for this year, let us take to heart
Jesus last message from this Gospel. Jesus is the
Christ. He is God’s Son sent into the world to
redeem the world. He is the Son of Man sent down
the Ladder from Heaven to redeem us. And in the
Eucharist, in the Bread and Wine transformed at the
Mass, Jesus offers his very self to us as Bread for
this Journey. Here in the fallen world He
strengthens us spiritually and physically for what
we need to do. So, today let us recall this important
message and receive the Blessed Sacrament most
worthily.
