Pastor’s Letter The Gift of the Spirit June 27/28 Dear Parish Family, If you come to the 11 AM Mass in the summer, you may well know Shea Megale. Shea is a young woman who has been coping with a spinal muscle disorder since childhood. She has a high tech wheelchair and is often at Mass when her family is visiting Southampton. Shea has had many physical challenges in life but that has not deterred her from pursuing an active life. She enjoys travel, has a bright inquiring mind, and authored a series of children's books starring her first service dog, Marvelous Mercer. This spring, on one of her visits, she told me that with all the challenges in her life she had never had the opportunity to receive the sacrament of Confirmation. I told her that Pentecost was in just a few weeks and that pastors in our diocese have the privilege of confirming adults who somehow missed that sacrament on Pentecost Sunday. She thought that was great and asked what she would need to do. Among the short list of practicalities, she would need a Confirmation name. She promised to think about a good saint for this important day. A few days before Pentecost, she wrote to me that she had chosen the name Peter. I was a little surprised — well, after all, I thought she would have chosen the name of a saintly woman! Then I read the rest of her note: After a LOT of reading and closing my eyes waiting to hear something, only to pop an eye back open when a dog's wet nose rubbed into my lap. Father Mike, I want Saint Peter to be my patron saint. I know his name is used so often in scripture and we see him everywhere in the Church, but St. Peter is unique and special to me regardless of everything else. I tried to feel attached to so many lesser-known saints in my saint book, to be less conventional and more unusual, but I kept being drawn to Simon Peter. St. Peter is Jesus' chief apostle but also probably the most flawed. He's reckless, impulsive, anger -prone, and doubted his faith many times. Yet...God made HIM the rock of the church. Peter is also so brave... Courage is my favorite virtue. Sometimes I pursue it recklessly myself because it makes me feel in control of my life for a high of just a few seconds. My bravery is bought with a smirk and a nod and closing my eyes tight before letting someone else give the push - into the Great Barrier Reef, onto a wire ziplining in Colorado... But Peter? Peter answers the call to action first and is afraid second. In this way, and all his wounds and flaws, he is so much like us, Father. Once Peter sat in a little rowboat with the other apostles and the sky turned black and the ocean split with froth and crests that rose higher and higher. They clutched the rims of the ship and tried to keep from flipping. At the edge of the horizon, a figure appeared which they thought was a ghost. "Do not be afraid. It is me." Jesus called to them. Peter's heart surely skipped at the sight of his teacher and he inquired what to do. Jesus said, "Come." Peter lunged over the side of the boat. Just like that. He walked on water towards the Lord. When fear filled him, that is when he fell and sank and panicked. He cried for help. In a flash, Christ's hand grasped him. He said lovingly, "You of little faith...wherefore did you doubt?" And pulled him to safety. What did Peter say after then? I imagine Peter shook and closed his eyes and promised he'd never doubt again only to remain haunted by his doubts his entire life. He denied Christ three times the day Christ died, but went on to heal a lame man like me, and set fire to the world. Peter was crucified upside down because he didn't believe he was worthy to die as Christ did. The greatest things Peter ever did happened only after the greatest mistakes he ever made. His overcoming defined him, not his weaknesses. Maybe I'll walk too. And so on Pentecost Sunday, Shea Peter received the gift of the Holy Spirit in the Sacrament of Confirmation. Her eyes filled with tears as we all prayed for her. There was not a dry eye in the Church. Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And You shall renew the face of the earth. Sincerely yours in Christ, Rev. Michael A. Vetrano, Pastor The Gift of the Spirit Father Mike, I hope that when my name is called, I also will leap over the side of my boat into stormy water. Dear Friends, Catholic Ministries Appeal Joseph believes his involvement in Youth Ministry has been one of the most important inspirations in his life. Your donation to the Catholic Ministries Appeal ensures that young people like Joseph have an opportunity to connect with Catholic Youth Ministry programs throughout Long Island. Here they can develop a relationship with God that will lead to a life of prayer and service, coupled with the support and socialization of other young people who embrace the same Church and values. “Youth Ministry changed my life. I would not be the same person without Youth Ministry; it molded me. I tell everyone the way to be the best you can be is to give yourself fully to your Faith and soak up everything you can from your Parish Youth Ministry experience,” shared Joseph More than 6,000 young people participate in Youth Ministry Programs in our Diocese. The Catholic Ministries Appeal is also important for so many other ministries and programs that help our children grow in our faith, including religious education programs for more than 100,000 of our young people in public schools as well as Campus and young adult ministry programs. Your support helps to inspire our young people to live and love their faith. Life Corner :: SHJM Respect Life Ministry RESOURCES FOR THOSE SEEKING AN ALTERNATIVE TO ABORTION: Rockville Centre Diocese, 516-678-5800, ext.626, www.drvc.org/respectlife Priests for Life, 888-735-3448, www.priestsforlife.org Birthright, 631-728-8900, 800-550-4900 Healing post-abortion: Rachel's Vineyard, 877-467-3463, www.rachelsvineyard.org Did you know... about Bernard Nathanson, MD, abortion proponent turned Pro-Life? Dr. Nathanson was a New York City Obstetrician-Gynecologist who, in the 1960's, ran the largest freestanding abortion clinic in the world, and was a The Faith that Does Justice founding member of the National Abortion Rights Action League, or NARAL. He presided over more than 60,000 abortions, doing thousands himself. In the late 1970's, in part because of the availability of improved ultrasound imaging, he began to question the morality of his actions, and completely changed his mind, becoming an outspoken opponent of abortion. He wrote extensively on the subject, including a book titled "The Hand of God: A Journey from Death to Life". In 1996, he converted from Judaism, and became Catholic, being Baptized by John Cardinal O'Connor. He always emphasized that he came to Catholicism after he became convinced that abortion was wrong -- not because the Church said so; he was attracted in great part because one could find forgiveness in the Catholic church. Dr. Nathanson died at the age of 84, and was buried from St. Patrick's Cathedral, in New York City. Reflections On the Gospel from Pax Christi June 28, 2015 “God did not make death, nor does God rejoice in the destruction of the living (Wisdom 1:13). So Sunday’s readings begin, but that is not where they end. Rather they end with Jesus offering us not one, but two examples of God’s desire for to us to have life and to have it to the full. Not only does Jesus revive Jairus’s daughter from death, but he also heals the woman with the hemorrhage. And he does both with a touch. In the case of the child, Jesus takes her hand and invites her to rise. In the case of the woman, she touches Jesus and the healing happens even before Jesus is aware. But when he realizes that “power had gone out of him,” despite the urgency of Jairu’s plea, Jesus takes the time to reassure the woman. That’s how great God’s will for us to live is! And it doesn’t matter if you are old or young, privileged or not. We, too, have the power to touch—hearts, hands, and minds. Let’s take the time, as Jesus did, to reach out to offer help and to receive it. We may never know the life we enrich, but it will be enriched indeed. Printed from www.
