Would you like to learn how to make a video game? 9am—5pm Inside this issue: Children’s Chat & Programs 2 Tech Talk 3 Mobile Hot Spot 4 Periodico Bibliotecaria 5 Trustees & Hours Sept - Nov 2010 6 Markham Public Library now offers a seven week class that will focus on hands-on after school program for motivated 13 - 18 year students interested in learning the nuts and bolts behind video games. Also, class will focus on internet publishing, character design, storyboards and the reconstruction of game and animation elements from varying “everyday” technology. Upon conclusion of classes, student should have a completed animation or game with sound. Please register at the circulation desk by August 28th. Ages 13-18. Thursday’s, September 16th, 23rd, 30th, October 7th, 14th, 21st, & 28th 4pm - 6pm Illinois Funding Source (IFS) delivers timely and accurate details on foundations and corporate givers right to your desktop. MEXICAN INDEPENDENCE DAY - Mexican Indepencence day festivities include: mexican music, mexican food, games, face painting, pinatas and fun. Wednesday, September 15th @ 5pm Every Wednesdays @ 4pm A SPOOKTACULAR HALLOWEEN EVENT - Come enjoy a fun & safe Halloween with others. Activites include: How Halloween Originated, Storytime - By the light of the Halloween Moon, Craft - Popcorn Balls, Also a Costume Contest. Saturday, October 30th @ 2pm FROM BOOKS TO MOVIES CLUB - Great stories aren't just composed of words written on a page. If you love books and watching movies, then you'll love our Read the Movie Discussion Group. Members will read the book selected, then get together on the 2nd Saturday to discuss the book, watch the movie and compare them both.. Popcorn and beverages are provided or you may bring your own snack. Wednesdays 10am - 11am WII WEDNESDAYS - There will be a time limit of 20 minutes per party/group. Choices are bowling, tennis or golf. CHICAGO WOLVES READING CLUB - Write a paragraph about your favorite team, arts and crafts, minimum of 6 books have to be completed to receive a prize. “Come have fun while reading” Starts November 1st - November 22nd Monday 5 - 6pm 1ST ANNUAL SPELLING BEE - We’re looking to see who S-P-E-L-L-S the B-E-S-T! Have you got what it takes? We are accepting applications for all ages who can spell on a fifth grade level. Inquire at the circulation desk. 50 students will participate in the preliminary round, 25 students will go on to the semifinals,10 will qualify for our final round. Monday, November 29th @ 6pm FAMILY READING NIGHT Fall into reading with Markham Library. See children’s desk for Family Reading Night activities. Wednesday, November 17th MORE PROGRAMS R&B LINE DANCE - Let Annet teach you the latest slides, hustle & line dances. Lets have good fun while getting some good exercise. Classes are $5 Every Tuesday Nights @ 6pm JOB PREPARATION - Don’t miss valuable information given from Veronica Tharpe about Interviewing technique, communication skills and mock interviewing, hands on resume development, Also she will assist you with FREE resume skills. Tuesday, September 7th @ 4:30pm SENIOR COMPUTER CLASS - Sept 14th, 21st, 28th, Oct 12th, 19th, 26th, Nov 2nd, 9th, & 16th @ 11am. Space is limited, registration is required. MONEY SMART - Anthony Sinch has organized a free class designed to help consumers better manage their personal finances. Monday, October 4th @ 6pm CROCHET CLUB - Join us for a fun crocheting experience and enjoy the company of other crochet members. All skilled level adults are welcomed. Crochet materials needed: crochet hook D-DAY REMEMBERED - John “Doc” Morrissy has put together a fascinating program with a showing of the Academy Award nominated documentary. It will be followed by a Q&A period. Join us to honor the still surviving vets and pay honor to those that gave their lives for world freedom. Mon, Sept 13th, 20th, 27th & Oct 18th @ 6pm AUTHOR’S WORKSHOP - The author of More Than Just Sex: It’s the Art of the Chase , Gisele Haralson has a free workshop on following your dreams of writing a book. There will be a presentation, open discussion and a book signing. In the event that there are no available computers in our labs, we would like to extend to you the opportunity to use one of our wireless laptops. You must have a valid library card for this in-house check out. The laptops are for In-House use only and are not available for circulation outside the library. Circulating News Patron’s Book Request - As hard as we try to accommodate our patrons with the best of leisure reading, research and informative materials in our library collection of books, CDs and DVDs, we cannot provide everything to everyone. For this reason ILL (inter-library loan) was established, patrons may request items of interest from other libraries and receive them within a few days. Our collection has grown so come on and take advantage of your local mobile library. Parents we will be making stops at some of the local schools during school hours. In order for students to check out items they must have a valid library card. We encourage you to apply for a library card for your children so they can experience Markham’s first Bookmobile. Library cards can be acquired at the library as well as on the Bookmobile for Markham and Posen residents for free! Let’s all work together to continue to make the Bookmobile a success!
