Page 3 August 4, 2013 PASTOR’S REFLECTION Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 4, 2013 Dear Friends, The Lord clearly tells us today how foolish it is to devote our lives to the amassing of goods...and to be bereft in what matters to God. St. Paul tells the Colossians: “Make Christ your all and God your treasure. Remember that the goal is transformation, not accumulation. So put on that new self, put on Christ. • • What have you changed by worrying? What is then Lord trying to teach you today? As you reflect on God’s Word, may He strengthen you with His peace. May the good Lord bless you and your dear family now and always. Please pray for me. In Christ, Msgr. Pablo A. Navarro YOUTH AND YOUNG ADULT GROUP The Youth Group will be meeting on Sunday from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. Our Young Adult Group will be meeting on Tuesday from 7:30 until 9:00 p.m. Come join us as we engage in and tackle the hard-pressing questions of life. Rise up to the challenge of greatness. Embark with us as we attempt to be great men and women. PLEASE PRAY FOR ALL OUR SERVICE MEN AND WOMEN ESPECIALLY THOSE SERVING IN THE MIDDLE EAST Peter Alvarez, Eddie Gonzalez, Juan Lopez, Manny Pardo, Gabriel Perezalpizar, Max Petri, Luis Rosales, Adam Stenback, Charles Thompson and Tyson Stahl. Catholic Parish of St. John Neumann SECOND YEAR CONFIRMATION REGISTRATION MEETING !!!LAST CHANCE!!! THIS SUNDAY, AUGUST 4 TIME: 6:00 P.M., YOUTH ROOM (Adult Education Building – second floor) This is the last opportunity to register for second year Confirmation classes. Early registration will give you a head start on the service hour requirements. It is mandatory to attend one of the meetings in order to register. This is a meeting to explain everything about the requirements for Confirmation, registration for Confirmation, and a discussion about building the faith of our teens. • This meeting is designed for parents, but the Confirmation students are encouraged to attend also. Registration Fee – August 4 $150.00 Please bring a current copy of the Baptismal certificate (less than 6 Months old) with you if you have not turned it in before. Students from St. John Neumann School must bring a copy with them. If you have any questions, please call Zack at 305-255-6642, ext. 111. JUSTICE CORNER - BE RICH IN WHAT MATTERS TO GOD Today’s scriptures address our temptation to focus on material possessions rather than paying attention to God’s priorities. St. Paul admonishes us to, “Think of what is above, not of what is on earth” while Jesus reminds us that our lives are worth more than possessions. The recent economic recession forced us to examine our priorities. Many of us reduced spending by foregoing purchases that before now seemed essential. Previously self-reliant people sought financial assistance due to job loss, foreclosure, eviction, etc. God encourages us to trust in His providence and avoid hoarding possessions. Instead, we are encouraged to do what matters – feed the hungry, clothe the naked, etc. Jesus had a special love for children. School reopens soon and people living on the margins are struggling to provide for their children. You can donate to an organization that helps children obtain the resources they need. Contact Rachel Ramjattan 954-618-8151 or [email protected] if you would like to donate school supplies to low-income children in South Florida. WORD OF LIFE Dear brothers and sisters, let us look to God as the God of Life, let us look to his law, to the Gospel message, as the way to freedom and life. The Living God sets us free! Let us say “Yes” to love and not selfishness. Let us say “Yes” to life and not death. Let us say “Yes” to freedom and not enslavement to the many idols of our time. In a word, let us say “Yes” to the God who is love, life and freedom, and who never disappoints …; let us say “Yes” to the God who is the Living One and the Merciful One. ~ Pope Francis, homily for “Evangelium Vitae Day,” June 16, 2013.
