PASTOR’S REFLECTION
Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
August 4, 2013
Dear Friends,
The Lord clearly tells us today how foolish it is to
devote our lives to the amassing of goods...and to be
bereft in what matters to God.
St. Paul tells the Colossians: “Make Christ your all
and God your treasure. Remember that the goal is
transformation, not accumulation. So put on that
new self, put on Christ.
•
•
What have you changed by worrying?
What is then Lord trying to teach you today?
As you reflect on God’s Word, may He strengthen
you with His peace. May the good Lord bless you
and your dear family now and always. Please pray
for me.
In Christ,
Msgr. Pablo A. Navarro

JUSTICE CORNER - BE RICH IN WHAT
MATTERS TO GOD
Today’s scriptures address our temptation to focus on
material possessions rather than paying attention to God’s
priorities. St. Paul admonishes us to, “Think of what is
above, not of what is on earth” while Jesus reminds us that
our lives are worth more than possessions.
The recent economic recession forced us to examine our
priorities. Many of us reduced spending by foregoing
purchases that before now seemed essential. Previously
self-reliant people sought financial assistance due to job
loss, foreclosure, eviction, etc. God encourages us to
trust in His providence and avoid hoarding possessions.
Instead, we are encouraged to do what matters – feed the
hungry, clothe the naked, etc.
Jesus had a special love for children. School reopens soon
and people living on the margins are struggling to provide
for their children. You can donate to an organization that
helps children obtain the resources they need. Contact
Rachel Ramjattan 954-618-8151 or [email protected]
if you would like to donate school supplies to low-income
children in South Florida.

Explore the Church’s conviction that life here
and now is preparation for an extraordinary
world that is yet to come – a supernatural destiny. Father Barron presents the Catholic vision of death, judgment, heaven, hell and purgatory as he journeys to Florence, Ireland and
Rome. The vision of the Church sees beyond
this world and invites us to consider a world
without end. Father Barron shows how this
vision is supported by the mystery and truth
of the Resurrection of Jesus. For more information, please contact Kathy Mesa 305-2748348 or [email protected]

WORD OF LIFE
Dear brothers and sisters, let us look to
God as the God of Life, let us look to his
law, to the Gospel message, as the way to
freedom and life. The Living God sets us
free! Let us say “Yes” to love and not
selfishness. Let us say “Yes” to life and
not death. Let us say “Yes” to freedom
and not enslavement to the many idols of
our time. In a word, let us say “Yes” to
the God who is love, life and freedom,
and who never disappoints …; let us say
“Yes” to the God who is the Living One
and the Merciful One. ~ Pope Francis,
homily for “Evangelium Vitae Day,”
June 16, 2013.
