Dear Parent/Guardian,
Once again, as a way of preparing for the next school year, your child will be required to
complete a summer reading assignment. Summer assignments for ALL GRADE LEVELS must be
submitted to the classroom teacher NO LATER THAN FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 2016.
This summer, students entering Kindergarten, Grade 1 and Grade 2 must complete one of the
following assignments after reading the book of their choice: 1) create a bookmark using paper
approximately 3 in. X 6 in.; 2) draw a picture depicting a scene from the book, or 3) write a short
summary of the story.
Students entering Grades 3, 4 and 5 are required to read ONE FICTION book and complete an
assignment for that book. Students MUST answer ONE of the two attached open-ended questions.
Completion of this assignment will result in their first Language Arts grade for the 2016-2017 school
year; failure to complete the assignment will result in a 0 (zero) as a grade. Students will receive a
homework pass for reading an additional fiction or non-fiction book, then completing and submitting a
summary book report (author, title, brief summary and short paragraph describing their reaction to the
story). This must also be submitted no later than Friday, September 9, 2016. Students can only receive
one homework pass.
Please remember that all books must be on or above your child’s reading level. Librarians at the
Rahway Public Library are available to assist you in choosing your child’s book.
Reading is an essential aspect of your child’s education and will only benefit them throughout
their lives. Keeping students academically engaged throughout the summer is one way to continue to
ensure their success in the future. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me

Students entering Grades 3, 4 and 5 must answer one of the following two questions:

In many stories, characters face struggles or conflicts. Sometimes these conflicts are with
themselves or with another character. Sometimes they face a challenge against the world
in which they live. Amelia Bedelia, for example, faces a challenge because she does not
often understand the meaning of the directions she is given. Junie b. Jones faces a
challenge within herself – following directions and doing the right thing. Gritch the
Witch in Piggie Pie faces a challenge against other characters (the pigs).
Using your summer reading FICTION book, find a challenge that one of the characters
is facing. Tell about the challenge; is it a challenge against the world they live in (like
Amelia B.), a challenge against him or herself (like Junie b.), or a challenge against
another character or characters, like Gritch the Witch? Tell about how this challenge
affects other characters in the book.
Pretend that the challenges in your story were happening in your life today. Write a
paragraph describing how these challenges would affect other people in your life.
The main character in your FICTION story is very important; but many times there is
another character in the story who is also important to that main character and the story
itself.
Choose a character who is NOT the main character and explain why he/she is important
to the story.
Write about how this story might be different if this character was not included in the
book.

Una vez más, como una manera de prepararnos para el próximo año escolar, a su niño se le requerirá que
complete una asignación de lectura de verano. LOS ESTUDIANTES SE ENCARGARÁN DE ENVIAR SU
TRABAJO COMPLETO AL PROFESOR DE AULA A MÁS TARDAR EL VIERNES, 9 DE
SEPTIEMBRE DE 2016.
Los estudiantes que ingresan a Kindergarten, al grado 1 y grado 2 deben completar una de las siguientes
asignaciones después de leer el libro de su elección: 1) crear un marcador usando papel aproximadamente 3 X
6; 2) dibujar una imagen que represente una escena del libro, o 3) escribir un breve resumen de la historia. La
finalización de esta asignación resultará en su primer grado de Artes del Lenguaje para el ciclo lectivo del 20162017; si falla en completar la asignación se le dará como resultado un 0 (cero) como calificación. Los
estudiantes recibirán un pase de deberes para leer un libro de ficción adicional o un libro de no ficción, y
después, completar y presentar un informe de resumen de libro (autor, título, breve resumen y corto párrafo que
describe su reacción ante la historia). También debe ser presentado el viernes, 9 de septiembre de 2016 a más
tardar. Los estudiantes sólo pueden recibir un pase de tareas.
Este verano, cada estudiante que entre a los grados 3, 4 y 5 se le requiere leer un libro de ficción y completar
una asignación de ese libro. Los estudiantes deben responden una de las dos preguntas abiertas adjuntas.
Por favor recuerde que todos los libros deben ser en o por encima del nivel de lectura de su hijo. Bibliotecarios
en la biblioteca pública de Rahway están disponibles para ayudarle a elegir el libro de su hijo.
La lectura es un aspecto esencial en la educación de su hijo y lo beneficiará sólo a lo largo de su vida. Mantener
a los estudiantes dedicados académicamente durante todo el verano es una forma de seguir garantizando su

PREGUNTAS ABIERTAS
