The North American Martyrs, also known as the Canadian
Martyrs were 8 Jesuit missionaries from France. They were
brutally tortured and martyred in the mid-17th century in
what is now southern Ontario, Canada and at Aurisville upstate New York, during the warfare between the Iroquois
and the Huron.

En estos años ha cambiado la actitud hacia los indios
pielrojas. Se tiene conciencia de que la prepotencia de
los blancos colonizadores destruyó la vida de pueblos
de los que se aprecian, también demasiado tarde, algunas características. Pero, aun para estos pueblos se
puede decir que el cristianismo y sobre todo los misioneros se han preocupado realmente por entablar un
diálogo que permita hacer sobrevivir los valores más
genuinos. Esto queda confirmado con los acontecimientos de los ocho jesuitas que murieron mártires en
Canadá a mediados del siglo XVII, y sobre todo de
Juan Brébeuf.
Tres años después, en compañía de los Padres Massé y
Lalemant y el franciscano Joseph Roche d'Aillon, partió para Canadá. La primera tribu con la cual tuvo contacto fue la de los Algonquinos, que acompañó cinco
meses durante las cacerías por los bosques llenos de
nieve; tenía grande espíritu de observación y buena
memoria, y esto le facilitó el aprendizaje del idioma de
la tribu, de la que escribió una gramática y un vocabulario. Pasó después entre los Hurones, en cuya lengua
ya desaparecida redactó un catecismo, precioso aun
desde el punto de vista filológico. Con infinita paciencia recomenzó la misión entre los Hurones, después
que terminaron las luchas entre franceses e ingleses.
Los indios lo admiraban mucho por su calma, su inteligencia y hasta por su fuerza (lo llamaban "el hombre
que lleva los pesos"). Hacia 1637 pudo administrar los
primeros bautismos a los adultos: cuando murió, ya
había unos 7.000 Hurones cristianos.
Toda su vida fue un martirio: "Nuestras chozas son de
cortezas, como las de los salvajes... El interior de las
chozas es una pequeña imagen del infierno. Ordinariamente no se ve ahí sino fuego y humo; aquí y allí se
ven cuerpos desnudos, ennegrecidos y medio quemados, entre tropas de perros". El 16 de marzo de 1649
los Iroqueses enemigos de los Hurones, atacaron a la
misión, amarraron a Brébeuf a un árbol, le arrancaron
las uñas, lo despellejaron, lo torturaron de mil modos
y, finalmente, admirados de su valentía, le abrieron el
pecho y se comieron el corazón, para adueñarse de su
fuerza de ánimo. Con siete de sus compañeros mártires
(Antonio Daniel, Carlos Garnier, Gabriel Lalemant, Juan de La Lande, Isaac Jogues, Natale Chabanel y Renato Goupil) fue canonizado el 29 de junio
de 1931.
They are collectively patron saints of Canada. Sts René
Goupil, Isaac Jogues, and Jean de Lalande are considered
the first three US saints, as they were martyred in New
York State.
Jean de Brébeuf, the leader of the group arrived in America in
1625 to evangelize Native Americans. He lived among the Huron
for over 15 years under difficult and challenging circumstances.
In 1648 the Iroquois launched a war of extermination against the
Huron, their traditional enemies. Refusing to flee when their
Huron village was attacked, Brébeuf
And his assistant, Gabriel Lalemant, were captured. They were
fastened to stakes and tortured to death by scalping, mockbaptism using boiling water, fire, necklaces of red hot hatchets
and mutilation. Their suffering was horrific.
According to eyewitness accounts, Brébeuf did not make a single
outcry while he was being tortured and he astounded the Iroquois,
who later cut out his heart and ate it in hopes of gaining his courage. Brébeuf was 55 years old.
As a young Jesuit, Isaac Jogues, a man of learning and culture,
taught literature in France. He gave up that career to work among
the Huron Indians in the New World.
The Huron were constantly warred upon by the Iroquois, and in
1642 Fr Jogues was captured by the Iroquois and imprisoned for
13 months. His letters and journals tell how he and his companions were led from village to village, how they were beaten, tortured and forced to watch as their Huron converts were mangled
and killed.
An unexpected chance for escape came to Isaac Jogues . He was
finally ransomed by Dutch merchants in Albany. He was given
passage to New Amsterdam (New York City). It is believed
that he was the first Catholic priest to celebrate mass in
Manhattan .The Dutch also helped him to return to France .
Bearing the marks of his sufferings - several fingers had been cut,
chewed or burnt off.
Fr Jogues could have stayed back and enjoyed a peaceful life. But
his zeal led him back once more to the fulfillment of his dreams.
In a few months he sailed for his missions among the Huron.
At first Isaac Jogues was able to establish peaceful relations with
the Mohawks. But they soon considered him a sorcerer and
blamed him for the famine and disease that struck their homes in
1646. They invited Jogues to visit them and crushed his skull with
a tomahawk as he entered the chief’s cabin. His head and that of
his companion John de la Lande were placed on poles facing the
trails by which they came.
The North American martyrs were canonized in 1930. Their memorial is October 19 in the US, and September 26 in Canada.
