Happy new year!
The pressing issue at the moment for our school community is the fact that funding cuts for the Middle
School Magnet Consortium (MSMC), which includes
Parkland, Argyle, and Loiederman Magnet Middle
Schools, are included in the budget cuts proposed by
MCPS Superintendent Jerry Weast for FY2011. This
means funding for Parkland Magnet Middle School is in
danger!
For Parkland MMS, this could mean…
Losing some of our special science magnet classes. Losing teaching positions. Losing the block scheduling. We need to make sure the Montgomery County Board
of Education knows how important Parkland is for our
children! Do this by speaking out about the unique
experiences Parkland offers.
We had a GREAT showing at the Board of Education
meetings on January 13th and January 20th, with students Katie Anderson, Sareana Kimia, Katie Lo Re,
Christina McCann, and Tanner Williams addressing the
Board as well as parents Joyce Breiner-Yaney, Mike
Dinkins, Roni White and myself. We had DOZENS of
families who attended the meetings, held signs and
posters, and showed the Board how much we love
Parkland.
THANKS to everyone, especially Joyce
Breiner-Yaney and Shefali Gupta for helping to lead the
charge!
...BUT THE FIGHT IS NOT OVER YET...

Dear Parents,
Can you believe that we have started the
third quarter? Our sixth graders are acting
like they are seasoned veterans in the
hallways, the seventh graders are seeing if
they are taller, broader and whether their
voices are changing and the eighth graders
are slowly becoming more sentimental as
they realize that their time at Parkland is
coming closer and closer to an end.
The biggest initiative we have had this year
is the focus on developing academic routine for our students. The dividers that were provided are an
organizational tool that both parents and students can utilize.
We have had power periods where students worked on notebook
organization and time management skills. And we have had Academic Achievement Nights where our students worked with their
parents to develop an Academic Contract and a review of their
own student data. We hope these initiatives will assist our students to become as academically competitive as possible. I
believe our efforts have paid off because during the first quarter,
we had over 407 students make the honor roll. Parents, please
make sure you review the dividers and the academic routines
that your child has at home. In particular, students should be
studying 90 minutes a night minimum: 30 minutes for math, 30
minutes for reading and 30 minutes for everything else.
The Maryland State Assessments are coming in mid March.

Students also attended the February 3rd Youth Town Hall sponsored
by the County Council which was broadcast live on the County's cable
station County Cable Montgomery (CCM-Channel 6 on Comcast and
RCN, Channel 30 on Verizon).

that your child gets a good night’s sleep and is on time for school
and ready to take the MSA tests. These tests will determine if
Parkland makes annual yearly progress (AYP) again. Your support is critical and we ask that you be an integral part of Parkland’s success on these tests. To assist students to be as excited as possible about the MSA test, we will have spirit week
from March 1st through the 5th. Each day will have a certain
theme and on Friday March 5th we will have a pep rally as we get
everyone excited for the Parkland-Loiederman Faculty Student
basketball game at Wheaton HS. For two years in a row, over
1200 people have attended this event as students of all grade
levels participate and see our teachers battle with the Loiederman staff. Get your tickets early for this event, and parents,
practice your foul shot!
Finally, I want to thank all of you who wrote letters to the Board
of Education in support of the Middle School Magnet Consortium
and Parkland. Your words of kindness about what we do here at
Parkland made my staff feel proud that our community is grateful for all they do. Thank you! We are proud and honored to serve
you.
May we all continue to have a successful and productive academic year. Thank you again for all that you do to help your child

Estimada Comunidad de Parkland,
¿Pueden creer que hemos comenzado el tercer trimestre? Nuestros estudiantes de sexto grado actúan como
si ya fueran veteranos en los pasillos,
los de séptimo grado miran si están
más altos y si sus voces han cambiado, y los de octavo poco a poco están
más sentimentales al darse cuenta
que su ida de Parkland está cada vez
más cerca.
La iniciativa más grande que hemos
tenido este año ha sido el enfoque en la rutina del desarrollo
académico para nuestros estudiantes. Los periodos que les
proporcionamos son una herramienta de organización que
tanto los padres como los estudiantes pueden utilizar. Hemos
tenido los “power periods” donde los estudiantes han trabajando en la organización de sus libros y como organizar mejor su
tiempo. Asimismo, hemos tenido noches de Rendimiento Académico donde nuestros estudiantes han trabajado con sus
padres en desarrollar un Contrato Académico y a la vez repasar
los datos de los estudiantes. Esperamos que estas iniciativas
ayuden a nuestros estudiantes a ser estudiantes académicamente competitivos. Creo que nuestros esfuerzos han valido
la pena porque durante el primer trimestre tuvimos 407 estudiantes que hicieron la lista de honores. Padres, por favor
asegúrense de revisar todas las noches Los periodos y rutinas

LA ASOCIACIÓN DE ESTUDIANTES EN LA COMUNIDAD DE PARKLAND (SGA)
Desea saber qué está pasando con el SGA? Bien, permítanos contarle.
Empezamos el año creando las áreas de enfoque: Liderazgo, Servicio, Apreciación y el Crear un Ambiente Social.
El éxito de la recolección de comida enlatada fue nuestra primera actividad. Recolectamos más de 1400 latas para distribuirlas a “Manna Food Drive”. La clase de la señora Molina fue la que más latas trajo y ganó un desayuno de Dunkin Donuts.
¡Buen trabajo!
El primer baile del SGA fue durante la semana de Halloween. Mucha gente se divirtió, se disfrazó y comió pizza.
Estamos muy contentos de haber distribuido más de 500 cartas de apreciación a los profesores y personal de la escuela.
Los estudiantes participaron escribiendo notas de agradecimiento en tarjetas que el SGA patrocinó.
Desafortunadamente tuvimos que cancelar la semana de espíritu colegial “spirit week” debido a la nieve. Estamos viendo
cuando podemos ponerlo nuevamente en el calendario.
El SGA está trabajando con el PTSA para luchar por el financiamiento de las escuelas magnet. Muchos representantes del
SGA estarán hablando frente a la Junta Directiva en el mes de enero.

¡MINI BECAS APOYAR A NUESTROS ESTUDIANTES!
POR JOAN BLAIR
Sus contribuciones a los eventos del PTSA para recaudar fondos han permitido que nos otorguen cuatro mini becas hasta el
momento. Estas becas han apoyado a nuestros estudiantes a través de las siguientes actividades:
Tutoría de Liderazgo para el Futuro: En el mes de octubre, un grupo de 25 chicos se beneficiaron de un fin de semana muy
intenso al aire libre, con momentos de reflexión y amistad con el personal de la escuela Parkland cerca de Thurmont, Maryland. Esto fue posible gracias a una mini beca muy generosa del PTSA de Parkland para que los estudiantes se sientan
desafiados a ser los líderes positivos en nuestra escuela. Al trabajar con el personal de Parkland, primero identificaron
problemas críticos de comportamiento que estaban ocurriendo en la comunidad de la escuela. Los estudiantes desarrollaron modos de: 1) promover comportamientos positivos que podrían reducir el número de suspensiones; 2) ayudar a desarrollar fuertes y positivos líderes; y 3) mejorar el ambiente de la escuela.
Noche de Matemáticas: Esta mini beca ayudó a comprar muchos útiles, juegos, actividades para la casa, premios, y comida para la
noche de matemáticas que se llevó a cabo el 3 de diciembre de 2009. Después de que los estudiantes y sus familias disfrutaron de
comer espagueti, los estudiantes rotaron en varias clases donde disfrutaron juegos y actividades con sus compañeros y familiares relacionados a las matemáticas.
Step Team (Equipo de los Pasos): El “step team” de Parkland también se benefició de estas mini becas para que un grupo de 14 chicas
pudieran aprender a ser “steppers” y servir a la escuela y a la comunidad a través de presentaciones y proyectos de la comunidad. El
“step team” usó esta mini beca para promover y financiar “The Chocolate Affair”, una presentación para recaudar fondos para futuras
competencias del “step team”.
Libros de ESOL: Los fondos de estas mini becas se usaron para comprar libros para los estudiantes de ESOL, del nivel uno y dos y complementar el nuevo currículo. Estos libros se usaron para proporcionar práctica adicional a los lectores más nuevos de ESOL que necesitan ayuda adicional y tienen muchos deseos de aprender.
Sillas Para el Programa de Leer 180: Siete sillas cómodas y duraderas serán compradas con fondos de esta mini-beca. El Programa de
Leer 180 utilizará estas sillas a través de cada día en un salón de lectura donde cada estudiante pasa 20 minutos construyando habilidades lectura de comprensión. Las clases servirán a 150 estudiantes este año que leen dos o más años debajo de nivel de grado y
hasta este punto, ha tenido experiencias exitosas limitadas con lectura. Estos "leyendo sillas" servirá para muchos años.

PTSA MINI-GRANTS: SUPPORTING OUR STUDENTS

Your contributions towards PTSA fundraisers have allowed us to award five mini-grants so far this year.
These grants have supported our kids through the following activities:
Mentoring Future Leadership: In October, a group of twenty-five male students benefited from an intense weekend of time outdoors, reflection, and friendship with Parkland staff near Thurmont, Maryland. This was made possible by a generous mini-grant from the Parkland
PTSA so students could be challenged to be positive leaders at Parkland Middle School. Working with Parkland staff, they first identified
critical behavioral problems that were occurring in the school community. Students then developed ways to: 1) promote positive behaviors that could reduce eligibility and suspension rates, 2) help develop strong and positive student leaders, and 3) improve the overall
atmosphere of the school.
Math Night: This mini-grant helped to purchase supplies, games, take home activities, prizes,
and food for Parkland’s Math Night held on December 3, 2009. After 55 students and their
families enjoyed a free spaghetti dinner with their teachers, students and their families rotated through various classrooms where they enjoyed math-related games and activities with
their fellow students and family members.
Step Team: Parkland’s Step Team also benefited from mini-grant funds so a group of 14 female students could learn to be “steppers,” and serve their school and community through
service projects and performances. The Step Team will use these mini-grant funds to promote and fund various performances and future step team competitions.
ESOL Books: Mini-grant funds will be used to purchase individual books to complement the
new and exciting Milestone curriculum for ESOL Level 1 and Level 2 students. These independent books were used to provide additional practice to newer ESOL readers who are hungry to learn and who need additional support.
Read 180 Chairs: Seven comfortable and durable chairs will be purchased with funds from
this mini-grant. The Read 180 program will use these chairs throughout each school day in a
reading lounge where each student spends 20 minutes of each 90 minute block building reading comprehension skills. Read 180 classes
will serve 150 Parkland students this year who are reading two or more years below grade level and up to this point, have had limited successful experiences with reading. These “reading chairs” will serve Parkland reading students for many years to come.
What’s Up with the Student Government (SGA)?
We started the year by identifying our four focus areas:
Leadership, Service, Appreciation and Creating a Social
Environment.
Unfortunately our Spirit Week was cancelled due to the
December snowstorm. We are working on getting it back
on the calendar very soon.
The successful canned food drive was our initial activity.
We collected over 1,400 cans to be distributed to the
Manna Food Drive. Ms. Molina’s class brought in the most
cans and won a Dunkin Donuts breakfast. Great job, class!
SGA is working with the PTSA to fight for funding for
magnet schools. Many SGA representatives spoke at the
Board of Education meetings in January.
The first SGA dance was held during Halloween week.
Many people had fun wearing costumes and eating pizza.
We were excited to deliver over 500 letters of Appreciation to teachers and staff. Students participated by writing thank you notes and letters of appreciation on SGA
sponsored-stationery.
We look forward to a lot of student participation in our
community service projects this spring.
