East Accelerated Pathway (EXP)
EXP classes are offered in Math, Language Arts, Science, and
Social Studies, and are designed to benefit students throughout
a various range of abilities. Sometimes referred to as
“personalized learning,” students who are self-motivated to
work through the digital curriculum are able to do so at their
own pace (credits earned can be accelerated or slowed down
based on student need). The curriculum is also available to
students outside of the traditional classroom setting and can be
accessed via any internet connection throughout the world for
those students wishing to accelerate. Daily attendance is still
required as teachers will still be providing instruction to the
class. Students wishing to register for EXP classes should talk
to their counselor and sign up for the following classes:

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
EXP (East “xcelerated”pathway)
Hey East High Community! We are excited to finally get to
tell you about a newer program here at East called EXP (East
“xcelerated” pathway). This past year we piloted several
digital classrooms focused on personalized student learning.
The four areas were Math, Language Arts, Science, and Social
Studies. This upcoming school year we will also offer
Financial Literacy and Health both during the day and as an
afterschool option. Curriculum for these classes is mostly
digital, with some assignments and projects being traditional.
Students have the flexibility to work on the curriculum even
outside of regular school time, allowing them to “xcelerate”
their individual learning pace and credit acquisition. Students
must demonstrate competency in specific standards before
being able to move to the next standard. Each class has a
Highly Qualified Teacher who is an expert in their field, who is
always working with individual student needs (personalized
teaching/learning).
Some of you might be wondering why this is such a big deal:
Well, the EXP program gives more control over the time, pace,
and place, to the student (students are able to move at their own
pace and work outside of the regular school day if desired); it
also creates more flexibility for student schedules as many of
the classes are offered as regular credit or Honors credit.
Students in EXP need to be self-motivated and willing to work
hard and persevere. EXP classes also assure students, parents,
and teachers, that content mastery is attained through
demonstrated competency. If you and/or your student are
interested in signing up for the EXP classes it can be done on

ACT TESTING
On March 3, 2015, 11th graders will be taking the ACT
Test. Students who are testing must bring their school
I.D. in order to be admitted into testing. Students in the
9th, 10th, and 12th grade will be going on a fieldtrip to
Antelope Island while 11th grade students take the ACT.
The school schedule for the day will be 7:45 a.m.-1:00
p.m. Due to ACT strict testing requirements, students
arriving after 8:00 a.m. will be sent home.
COUNSELING CENTER
ACT
The next ACT exam will be held on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2015.
On the day of the exam, bring your registration paper, picture
ID, pencils, and approved calculator. No cell phones or pagers
are allowed. See www.actstudent.org for more information.
Middle School Registration
The counselors will be going into the middle schools to register
the incoming 9th graders for the 2015-2016 school year. The
schedule is:

East High Registration
East High Registration for the 2015-2016 school year will be
held during the weeks of Wednesday, February 11, 2015 thru
Wednesday, February 25, 2015. Students will receive their
registration card and course catalog on February 11th &
February 12th. Registration will occur during their Math
classes. Beginning February 18th, students will input their class
requests into our Power School computer system. This process
will end February 25, 2015. If you have any questions, please
contact the Counseling Center.

All seniors and their parents/guardians are encouraged to come
to this event. We will have financial aid experts available to
answer questions about the FAFSA and for help completing the
FAFSA.
In order to complete the FAFSA you will need to have:
• Student’s Social Security Number.
• Student’s driver's license (if any)
• Student’s 2014 W-2 forms and other records of money
earned
• Student’s (and if married, your spouse's) 2014 Federal
Income Tax Return. IRS 1040, 1040A, 1040 EZ
• Parents' 2014 Federal Income Tax Return (if you are a
dependent student)
• Student’s alien registration or permanent resident card (if
the student is not a U.S. citizen)
Eligibility Criteria:
• Student needs to be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national (born in
American Samoa or Swains Island), have a green card,
have an Arrival-Departure Record (I-94) from U.S.
Citizen and Immigration Services (USCIS) showing:
• Refugee
• Asylum Granted
• Cuban-Haitian Entrant (Status Pending)
• Conditional Entrant” (valid only if issued before
April 1, 1980)
• Parolee

the FAFSA and provides access to your personal

4. Continue to follow the directions given

ROTARY SCHOLARSHIP
Senior students with community service experience, who
are interested in applying for the Rotary Service Above
Self Scholarship, email Alisa Kearl, Scholarship
Coordinator, to request an application. Completed
scholarship applications must be emailed back to her by

PARENT PARTICIPATION NEEDED!
As part of East High's accreditation process, parents are asked
to participate in the Parent Survey. Please take a few minutes to
fill it out so that we can use your input for future planning and
decision making.

SCHOOL CHOICE - OPEN ENROLLMENT
For the coming school year, students interested in enrolling in a
Salt Lake City school, who live outside the district or school
boundaries, may apply for an application during the Early
Enrollment: December 1, 2014 through February 20, 2015.
Applications are taken in the Student Services Department of
the Salt Lake City School District Administration Building.
Students may apply for enrollment in schools designated as
“Open” to transfer. Selected schools, programs and grades may
be at capacity for the upcoming 2015 and not available as a
choice for our list of available schools, grades, and programs or
other information pertaining to the open enrollment policy may
be obtained after November 30, 2014 from the Services office
at the above address or by calling: 801-578-8475.
Students currently enrolled in 6th transfer to the middle school
of their choice and students must make application for the their
choice during the Open Enrollment period. A $5.00 processing
fee will be charged at the time of application and may be
waived for qualified applicants. Parents and students will be
notified in writing by March 31, 2015 of acceptance or
rejection of the request for an Open Enrollment transfer to that
school.

A currently enrolled nonresident student shall be permitted to
remain enrolled, subject to the same rules and standards as
resident students, without renewed applications in subsequent
years following occurs:
• The student graduates or is no longer a Utah resident;
• The student is suspended or expelled from school;
• The district determines that school enrollment will exceed
the open enrollment threshold; If the transfer of a currently
enrolled student is being rejected for the coming year,
parents will be notified in writing by March 15, 2015.
SCHOOL FEES
Parents: A new fines list has been posted at the school. Please
have your students check this list to see if they have any fees or
fines owing. You may check your student’s fines on the
following website www.myschoolfees.com (you will need your
student number to access this). Please be aware that more fines
may accrue before the end of the year. Seniors will not be
allowed to pick up their cap and gowns until all fees are paid
and all books, uniforms, etc. are returned. Seniors will not be
allowed to participate in graduation activities or ceremonies
unless all fees are taken care of; this means they will not be
allowed to walk on graduation day. Be sure all fees and fines
are cleared before yearbook day or students will not be allowed
to pick up their yearbooks. The treasurer does take cash, check
and credit card (Visa, Discover and MasterCard).
OVERDUE AND LOST BOOKS FROM THE EHS
LIBRARY!
A new list of Overdue and Lost books has been posted in the
halls and classrooms of East High School. Please ask your
student to check the list to see if their student number is on the
list; if so, encourage them to look for the book at home and in
their classrooms. Graduation is coming and seniors must have
all fines paid. I am happy to help you with your Power School

WE NEED PARENT HELP!
As we begin second semester, we would like to enlist
parent support to end any form of hazing or harassment
at East High. An example of this is older students
kidnapping and shaving the heads of incoming Freshman
boys as well as other forms of harassment. This behavior
will not be tolerated at East High School and students
who participate in this kind of activity risk disciplinary
action and a possible Safe School Hearing as well as
criminal prosecution.

Student Handbook Policy on Hazing and Bullying*.
It is our wish that all of our students feel safe and
welcome at our school!

*Hazing and Bullying (Policy S-3)
Hazing is defined as the act of harassing or playing abusive and
humiliating tricks on individuals, or causing embarrassment to
an individual. Hazing is against the law. No hazing of any
kind will be tolerated. Please report any bullying or hazing to a
teacher, administrator or resource officer.
Any form of bullying is not allowed at school, on the way to
school, on the way home from school, or at school sponsored
activities. Bullying is behavior that is intended to cause harm or
stress, exists in a relationship in which there is an imbalance of
power, and may be repeated over time. Incidences of bullying
need to be reported to a school official immediately. Students
involved in any hazing or bullying activities may be suspended
from school and face disciplinary action. (See Policy G-19)
COURSE OFFERINGS FOR 2015-2016
As your student begins to think about the courses they would
like to take next year, consider some of the great classes
offered In Family and
Consumer Sciences
Education (FACS). FACS
classes are part of the
family of Career and
Technical Education (CTE)
courses offered at East
High. These courses help prepare students for family life and
careers in family and consumer science related fields and
vocational occupations. Two life-changing Family and
Consumer Science courses offered at East High are CHILD
DEVELOPMENT and EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION.
The CHILD DEVELOPMENT course provides students with
an understanding of the aspects of human growth and
development. Skills are developed as positive guidance
techniques and child related issues are studied. Students
learn how much time and responsibility is required to
parent a child. CHILD DEVELOPMENT is open for all
students in grades 9 thru 12 and offers students a 0.5 CTE
credit. CHILD DEVELOPMENT is a prerequisite for EARLY
CHILDHOOD EDUCATION.
EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION is a wonderful course that
prepares individuals for child related careers and provides
extensive skills through personal interaction with children.
We offer students a unique opportunity to become
“teachers” in our Little Leopard Preschool. Preschool
children from our community enroll in this program each
year, enabling our students to develop positive
relationships with the children as they provide learning
experiences and activities. Students also learn how to
implement childcare policies, guidance techniques, and
health and safety principles. EARLY CHILDHOOD
EDUCATION is open for all students in grades 10 thru 12
and offers students a 1.0 CTE credit. By taking this course,
Junior and Senior students can also choose to earn 3.0
CONCURRENT COLLEGE CREDITS in connection with Salt
Lake Community College.
Here’s what students have said about these courses:
“I believe that students should take this class because once
you take this class you start to be more responsible for
children and for all the needs of the kids. Also this would be a
great class because you learn how to treat the kids with great
respect.”
“The benefit of taking this class is to understand child
development and the different children’s stages. This class has
helped me become patient with children. Also the activities we
perform in the preschool will prepare me for the future when I
have my own children. But the most valuable benefit with this
class is the opportunity to interact with wonderful children.”
“I think you should take this class because it will help you
know how to take care of kids. You will know how to
understand them and how to work with them and teach them
new things.”
“I think students should take this class because you get to
interact with kids and you get to know the development of the
children and you get some experience out of this class. This
class is just awesome and fun. I love kids so that’s why I took it
and having to take care of these kids and help them learn it’s
just fun and interesting. You learn positive guidance and a lot
of important stuff. It’s a life changing experience. If you used
to tell a 5-year-old, “don’t run” you should know that’s wrong.
The right thing to tell them is “use your walking feet.” You
observe children and you get to understand the child.”
CLEMENTE COURSE IN THE HUMANITIES;
10TH GRADE
The Clemente Course is a unique two-semester elective, in
which sophomore students have the opportunity to work with
professors and honors undergraduate students from the
University of Utah and Westminster College in an exciting
interdisciplinary course. The Clemente Course introduces
students to important ideas and events in philosophy, art
history, literature and history. It encourages exploration
of BIG IDEAS hands on, and engages students in discussions to
test their understanding, writing to clarify their thought, and
projects to stretch their minds. Field trips and guest lecturers
are part of the experience. Clemente develops the skills and
habits of mind that are expected in college and introduces
subjects typically taught only in college. Prerequisite: None,
but students need to be eligible for AVID (although not
necessarily enrolled) and/or to be first-generation, and college
bound to enroll.

learn to dance! We offer beginning,
intermediate, and advanced dance. You will
not only learn Modern,
Ballet, Jazz, and Hip Hop,
but you will learn the history behind each
style as well as how to create your own
choreography!
You can also sign up for Social Dance, where
you will learn dances like the East Coast Swing, Cha
Cha, Tango,
Waltz, and the Foxtrot. Any dance class will
count as a Fine Arts, Elective,
ctive, or P.E. credit.

GREAT INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC
OPPORTUNITIES AT
EAST!
The instrumental music program
at East is growing at a fantastic
rate and we need talented players
to fill holes left by this year’s
seniors. The current plan is to
create a three-tiered system for
both string orchestras as well as band students. The band
program is working toward having a Concert Band, a Wind
Symphony, and a Jazz Band. The
he string program is working
toward having an Orchestra, an Advanced Orchestra, and a
special group that is currently called ECHO, made of
fantastically amazing string students who tour around to a
variety of venues and schools.
The strong guitar program here at East also allows for
students to not only learn how to proficiently play
the guitar, but to learn about some of people
who shaped how the guitar is played and
how we listen to music. Including: Jimi
Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Carlos Santana,
Buddy Guy, and others.
Dr. Petersen is currently looking at growing the program
further by teaching an AP music theory class to supplement the
overall music program here at East.
Dr. Cip Petersen, graduated from the University
rsity of Utah and
Snow College. He has founded
unded the District Jazz Band and
several acclaimed Jazz Bands around the district. Currently
teaching at both East High School and Bryant Middle, Dr.
Petersen has received advanced degrees in: Music Education
(Ph.D.), Saxophone Performance (M.M.), and Educ
Educational
Policy and Leadership (M.Ed.) and has taught workshops and
Master Classes in the Salt Lake City School Distric
istrict and at the
University of Utah.

SPRING SPORTS
BOYS SOCCER INFORMATION
Boys soccer conditioning has begun, we meet Monday,
Wednesday, and Thursday after school in the Commons.
Soccer tryouts will begin Feb. 25th. Please listen for
announcements.
SWIM TEAM
The swim team is nearing the end of our season with only the
Region and State Championships still to go.
The team traveled to Cedar City to participate in an invitational
over the Martin Luther King weekend where East placed
second! We had two DOUBLE individual champions: Katy
Mayer in both the 200 Free and 100 Free, and Meghan Rainier
won the 200 Individual Medley and the 100 Butterfly. We also
had several strong second place finishes including: Alex Mayer
in the 200 Free, Griffin Hale in the 100 Free, Jack Swanson
(and Alex Mayer 3rd) in the 500 Free, the Girls 200 Free Relay
(Eden Brush, Ainu Kaufusi, Katy Mayer, & Meghan Rainier),
Cameron Wright in the 100 Back, Nathan Van Buren in the 100
Breaststroke, and the Boys 400 Free Relay (Jack Swanson,
James Tippets, Alex Mayer, & Nathan Van Buren) Awesome!
Our last dual meet of the year was against Granger High School
where EAST won EVERY event but one in a dominating
showing. Not bad for a team with only 3 seniors!
We are excited to end our season with a bunch of fun events,
planned by the captains and fabulous parent group outside the
pool, and GREAT swims at the Region meet Jan 31st and the
State meet at BYU Feb 13-14.

Este registro de East High para el año escolar 2015-2016 se

El 3 de marzo de 2015, los estudiante en onceavo grado
(11) tomará el examen de ACT. Los estudiantes que
vayan a tomar el dicho examen deberán de traer consigo
mismo su I. D. a fin de ser admitidos en las pruebas. Los
estudiantes de la 9 ª, 10 ª, y en el 12o grado se irán de
excursión a Isla Antelope mientras que 11 estudiantes
del grado tomar el Examen de ACT. El calendario escolar
para el día será 7:45 -1:00 p.m. debido a estrictas
pruebas de AC,a los estudiantes que lleguen después de
las 8:00 a.m. serán enviados a la casa.

En el comienzo segundo semestre, nos gustaría conseguir
apoyo de los padres de poner fin a toda forma de novatadas o
acoso en East High. Un ejemplo de esto es los estudiantes de
mayor edad y el secuestro de afeitarse la cabeza de los
estudiantes por igual a los niños y otras formas de acoso. Este
comportamiento no será tolerado en el East High School, y los
estudiantes que participan en este tipo de actividad y ser objeto

Matricularse en una clase de danza es una gran manera de
divertirse, conocer gente nueva, ex-presarse, y aprender a
bailar! Ofrecemos clases de iniciación, intermedia y
avanzada. Usted no sólo aprender Moderno, Ballet, Jazz,
Hip Hop y, pero aprenderá la historia detrás de cada estilo,
así como la forma de crear su propia coreografía.
También puede inscribirse en Danza Social, donde podrá
aprender bailes como la Costa Este Swing, Cha Cha, Tango,
Vals y el Foxtrot. Cualquier clase de baile, contará como
licenciado en Bellas Artes, electivo o crédito de P. E.S

CLEMENTE CURSO EN EL CAMPO DE LAS
HUMANIDADES. GRADO 10
El Clemente es un único curso de dos semestres electiva, en
la que los estudiantes de segundo año tienen la
oportunidad de trabajar con los profesores y estudiantes de
honores universitarios graduados de la Universidad de Utah
y Westminster College en un emocionante curso
interdisciplinario. El curso Clemente introduce a los
estudiantes a ideas importantes y eventos en el ámbito de
la filosofía, historia del arte, la literatura y la historia. El
Comité alienta exploración de las grandes IDEAS, y permite
que los alumnos en los debates para probar su
comprensión, por escrito para aclarar su pensamiento, y
proyectos de estirar sus mentes. Viajes de campo y
conferenciantes invitados son parte de la experiencia.
Clemente se desarrolla las habilidades y hábitos de la
mente que se espera en la universidad y presenta temas
normalmente enseña sólo en la universidad. Requisito:
Ninguno, pero los estudiantes tienen que ser elegibles para
AVID (aunque no necesariamente matriculados) y/o de
primera generación y universitario para la inscripción.
FÚTBOL DE LOS MUCHACHOS
El acondicionado fútbol de niños ya han comenzado, se
reunirá el lunes, miércoles y jueves después de la escuela
en la Cámara de los Comunes. Jugadoras Fútbol
comenzará 25 feb. Por favor, preste atención a los
anuncios.
EQUIPO DE NATACIÓN
El equipo de natación está llegando al final de la temporada
con sólo la región y campeonatos estatales.
El equipo viajó a Cedar City para participar en una
invitación en Martin Luther King semana donde este
segundo puesto! Teníamos dos dobles campeones
individuales: Katy Mayer en los 200 libres y 100 libres y
Meghan Rainier ganó el 200 y el 100 mariposa. También
hemos tenido varios fuertes segundo lugar acabados
incluyendo: Alex Mayer en los 200 Libre, Griffin Hale, en
los 100 Libre, Jack Swanson (y Alex Mayer 3rd) en los 500
libres, el relé libre 200 niñas (Eden Pincel, Ainu Kaufusi,
Katy Mayer y Meghan Rainier), Cameron Wright en los 100
Espalda, Nathan Van Buren en los 100 metros braza, y los
niños 400 Relé libre (Jack Swanson, James Tippets, Alex
Mayer, Nathan & Van Buren) impresionante!
Nuestro último encuentro del doble del año fue contra
Granger High School, donde la escuela de East ganó CADA
