Their parents were worried about the extremes of behavior and attitude and finally took the boys to see a psychologist. The psychologist observed them a while and then said that he had a strategy to help them have a more balanced view of life. He said that they had a room filled with all the toys a boy could want. They would put the pessimist in that room and allow him to enjoy life. They also had another room that they filled with horse manure. They put the optimist in that room. Then they observed both boys through one-way mirrors. The pessimist sat there complaining that he had no one to play with. They went to look in on the optimist, and were astounded to find him digging through the manure. The psychologist ran into the room and asked what on earth the boy was doing. With a big smile, he replied that with all that manure, he was sure there had to be a pony in the room somewhere. The gospel today has the optimist and the pessimist. Faced with a huge crowd and Jesus’ challenge to feed them, Philip immediately begins to calculate the price and to declare that it is not feasible to even consider this option. Andrew doesn’t have a practical solution to feeding a vast multitude. Instead, he introduces Jesus to a generous boy who is willing to share his small lunch. To think that would be sufficient would require extreme optimism. But, Andrew sensed that the smallest gift put in the hands of Jesus would be sufficient to meet the need. His confidence in Jesus received a response that was beyond anyone’s imagining. Everyone ate and there were leftovers! It’s an important lesson to remember – we give the little gift, Jesus multiplies the blessings. We cannot bring about world peace, but our decision to practice patience or turn aside from anger and speak words of gentleness and love opens the door to invite Jesus to touch and change the heart of the one who has offended us. We cannot heal a broken heart or take another’s burden and carry it for them. Our temptation is to pretend we don’t notice their need. But, our willingness to listen, our decision to offer our support, the simple act of praying for them by name – the little gifts are multiplied as Jesus consoles them and assures them that they are not alone in their need, because we have not left them alone in their need. The power to transform the world with love belongs to Jesus. But each of us has a role to play. The pessimist in us looks at the world around us and begins to decide there is not hope, no way to change things for the better. But, Jesus is always the optimist. He knows that if we will only give our little gift – a smile, a word of kindness, a simple gift of some of our time or our possessions – he will multiply the love that is expressed, and transform the world into a wonderful place of blessing. –Fr. –Fr. Stephen W Bierschenk
