From the Pastor
Two boys were twins, one an
incurable optimist, one a total
pessimist. Their parents were
worried about the extremes
of behavior and attitude and
finally took the boys to see a
psychologist. The psychologist
observed them a while and then
said that he had a strategy to
help them have a more balanced
view of life.
He said that they had a room
filled with all the toys a boy
could want. They would put the
pessimist in that room and allow
him to enjoy life. They also had
another room that they filled
with horse manure. They put
the optimist in that room. Then
they observed both boys through
one-way mirrors. The pessimist
sat there complaining that he
had no one to play with. They
went to look in on the optimist,
and were astounded to find him
digging through the manure. The
psychologist ran into the room
and asked what on earth the boy
was doing. With a big smile, he
replied that with all that manure,
he was sure there had to be a
pony in the room somewhere.
The gospel today has the
optimist and the pessimist.
Faced with a huge crowd and
Jesus’ challenge to feed them,
Philip immediately begins to
calculate the price and to declare
that it is not feasible to even
consider this option. Andrew
doesn’t have a practical solution
to feeding a vast multitude.
Instead, he introduces Jesus to
a generous boy who is willing to
share his small lunch. To think
that would be sufficient would
require extreme optimism. But,
Andrew sensed that the smallest
gift put in the hands of Jesus
would be sufficient to meet the
need. His confidence in Jesus
received a response that was
beyond anyone’s imagining.
Everyone ate and there were
leftovers!
It’s an important lesson to
remember – we give the little gift,
Jesus multiplies the blessings.
We cannot bring about world
peace, but our decision to
practice patience or turn aside
from anger and speak words of
gentleness and love opens the
door to invite Jesus to touch and
change the heart of the one who
has offended us.
We cannot heal a broken heart
or take another’s burden and
carry it for them. Our temptation
is to pretend we don’t notice
their need. But, our willingness
to listen, our decision to offer our
support, the simple act of praying
for them by name – the little gifts
are multiplied as Jesus consoles
them and assures them that
they are not alone in their need,
because we have not left them
alone in their need.
The power to transform the
world with love belongs to Jesus.
But each of us has a role to play.
The pessimist in us looks at the
world around us and begins to
decide there is not hope, no way
to change things for the better.
But, Jesus is always the optimist.
He knows that if we will only give
our little gift – a smile, a word of
kindness, a simple gift of some
of our time or our possessions
– he will multiply the love that
is expressed, and transform the
world into a wonderful place of
blessing.

Había unos gemelos que uno
era extremadamente optimista y
el otro completamente pesimista.
Sus papas se preocupaban por la
extremidad de su comportamiento
y actitud, al punto que llevaron
a los niños a ver un psicólogo.
El psicólogo los observó y les
dijo que tenía las estrategias
necesarias para ayudarles a tener
una vida más balanceada.
Les dijo que tenían un cuarto
lleno de juguetes que todo
niño quisiera tener. Pondrían al
niño pesimista en el cuarto y lo
dejarían que disfrutara. También
tenían otro cuarto lleno estiércol
de caballo y pusieron al niño
optimista ahí. Observaron a los
niños a través de un espejo. El
pesimista estaba renegando
porque no tenía nadie con quien
jugar. Después miraron al niño
optimista y estaban sorprendidos
que estaba escarbando en el
estiércol. El psicólogo corrió al
cuarto y le preguntó qué estaba
haciendo. Con una gran sonrisa le
dijo que con tanto estiércol estaba
seguro que había un poni en
algún lugar del cuarto.
En el evangelio de hoy hay
un optimista y pesimista. Frente
a una gran multitud Jesús es
retado a darles de comer. Felipe
inmediatamente comenzó a
calcular el gasto y dijo que no era
posible considerar esta opción.
Andrés no tenía una solución
práctica para darle de comer
a tal multitud, pero presento a
Jesús a un joven generoso que
estaba dispuesto a compartir su
comida. Pensar que eso sería
suficiente era extremadamente
optimista. Pero Andrés, pensó que
un pequeño regalo en las manos
de Jesús sería suficiente para
solucionar esta necesidad. Su
confianza en Jesús fue más allá
de lo que pudiéramos imaginar.
¡Todos comieron y sobro comida!
Una lección importante para
recordar es que si le damos un
regalo pequeño a Jesús, Él lo
multiplicara en bendiciones. No
podemos traer la paz al mundo
pero nuestra decisión de ser
pacientes, dejar nuestra ira y
hablar palabras gentiles y de
amor, abrirá las puertas a que
Jesús toque y cambie el corazón
del que nos ha ofendido.
No podemos curar el corazón
roto o tomar la cargarla de
alguien más. Estamos tentados a
pretender que no pasa nada. Mas
nuestra voluntad de escuchar,
nuestra decisión de ofrecer
ayuda o el simple hecho de orar
por ellos, son pequeños regalos
que Jesús puede multiplicar,
consolando y asegurándoles que
no están solos en su necesidad
porque no los hemos dejado
solos.
El poder para transformar el
mundo con amor es de Jesús,
pero cada uno tenemos que
desempeñar un papel. El lado
pesimista de nosotros, mira al
mundo y comienza a decidir
que no hay esperanza, no hay
modo de mejorar las cosas. Sin
embargo, Jesús siempre fue
optimista. Él sabe que si tan solo
damos un pequeño regalo, una
sonrisa, una palabra cariñosa,
regalamos de nuestro tiempo
o de nuestras posesiones, el
multiplicara el amor que se
expresa y transformara el mundo
en un maravilloso lugar de
bendiciones.
