PASTOR’S COLUMN
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
I saw this reflection in Bringing Home the Word published by Ligouri Publications
and wanted to share it with you.
HEARING NO, SAYING “YES”
When our eight-month-old daughter began to crawl, it quickly became evident
that we needed to teach her the meaning of the word no. She was drawn to all the
things she shouldn’t touch – computers, electrical outlets, hot liquids. However, in response to our firm “No!,” she smiled and giggled. Not exactly what we were hoping
for. It took a while for her to learn that she had some restrictions on her newfound
freedom.
I recalled my daughter’s amused reaction to “No!” when I read St. Paul’s warning
against “biting and devouring one another” – the unethical behavior among the Galatians community – gossip, backbiting, cheating. Clearly God had said “no” to these
behaviors long ago, but the Galatians continued to exhibit them – kind of like laughing in God’s face.
Saint Paul reminds them that in Christ they do have freedom, but it’s not unbridled. This freedom comes with responsibilities – a commitment to love and serve one
another rather than treat each other immorally and unethically.
Next week we celebrate our country’s gift of freedom. But the freedom we enjoy
through Jesus is deeper. It’s freedom from sin and death, and it isn’t restriction –free.
It comes with a full-time, wholehearted commitment to work for the good of others
with love. It’s less about hearing no and more about saying “yes” to what God asks
of us in gratitude for such a great gift.
“The freedom we enjoy through Jesus comes with responsibilities.”

walking through the Sacrament of Baptism with
parents and Godparents bringing their child to
the church for the Sacrament of Baptism. Help
them to learn what this commitment means to
raise their child in the Catholic faith.
Elementary Religious Education –
Become a member of our Religious Education
Elementary Catechist Team walking with our
parish families as they prepare their child/ren
for the Sacraments of Penance and Eucharist.
Our catechists not only walk with families preparing for Sacraments but we also continue that
walk with them in the faith, learning about the
Bible and the history of those who have walked
in the faith before us.
The best way for you to continue to grow in

Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI said; “It is only
adoring and loving God above all things that human beings can totally fulfill themselves.”
Adoration of God makes sense because of who
He is.
When we adore God, we acknowledge that we
owe our existence to Him.
He is the purpose of our existence and joining
Him in Heaven for eternity is our ultimate goal.

Theology on Tap, coordinated locally by the
Los Angeles Archdiocesan Office of Young Adult
Ministry, is open to all young adults, ages 18 - 39,
singles and couples, regardless of religious
affiliation. RENEW International’s Theology on
Tap was created in 1981 to reach out to young
adults seeking to learn more about Catholicism
and to provide opportunities for fellowship.

SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN
Pool safety is about more than swimming
Swimming is a fun way to have some fun
and beat the heat during the summer. Parents
should teach their children about swimming
safety, including how to identify and handle uncomfortable situations. Although you may be
watching closely to make sure your kids are
safe in the water, don’t forget about when
they’re walking around, sitting out by the pool,
using the restrooms or out of sight. Teach your
children what to do when they feel uncomfortable at the pool, and let them know it is okay to
walk away and find a parent or trusted adult at
any time.

happy you look. What's your secret for a long

"I smoke three packs of cigarettes a day," he
replied. "I also drink a case of whiskey a week,
eat nothing but fast food, and never exercise."
"Wow!" The woman was amazed. "How old
are you?" she asked.

Queridos Hermanos y Hermanas en Cristo,
Vi esta reflexión en Bringing Home the Word publicada por Ligouri Publications y
quiero compartirla con ustedes.
ESCUCHANDO NO, DICIENDO "SÍ"
Cuando nuestra hija de ocho meses comenzó a gatear, rápidamente se hizo
evidente que teníamos que enseñarle el significado de la palabra no. Fue atraída por
todas las cosas que ella no debería tocar --- computadoras, enchufes eléctricos, líquidos
calientes. Sin embargo, en respuesta a nuestro firme "¡No!" Ella sonreía y bromeaba.
No era exactamente lo que estábamos esperando. Le tomó tiempo aprender que ella
tenía algunas restricciones en su nueva a libertad.
Recuerdo la reacción graciosa de mi hija a la palabra "¡No!" cuando leo en San
Pablo sobre la advertencia contra "mordiendo y devorándose unos a otros"
---el
comportamiento poco ético en la comunidad de Gálatas, chismes, maledicencia,
engaño. Claramente Dios había dicho "no" a estas conductas hace mucho tiempo,
pero los Gálatas continuaron exhibiéndolas--- era como reírse en la cara de Dios.
San Pablo les recuerda que en Cristo tienen libertad, pero no desenfrenada. Esta
libertad viene con responsabilidades---un compromiso de amar y servir a otros en
lugar de tratarlos mal sin moral o ética.
La semana que viene celebramos el don de la libertad de nuestro país. Pero la
libertad que disfrutamos a través de Jesús es más profunda. Es libertad del pecado y la
muerte y no es sin restricciones. Viene con un compromiso sincero, de tiempo
completo para trabajar por el bien de los demás con amor. No es acerca de escuchar
“no”, es más acerca de decir "sí” a lo que Dios nos pide en agradecimiento por ese
gran regalo.
"La libertad que disfrutamos a través de Jesús viene con responsabilidades".

Ha sido un capítulo maravilloso de 6 años de mi
vida aquí a OLPH. La razón se debe a cada uno de
ustedes.

Sigue Tocando
El folklore que rodea al pianista Ignace
Paderewski incluye esta historia. Una madre,
deseando fomentar el progreso de su hijo en el
piano, compró boletos para un concierto de
Paderewski.
Tenían asientos cerca de la parte delantera de
la sala de conciertos.
La madre encontró a un amigo para hablar y el
chico se deslizó lejos. Cuando llegó el tiempo de
empezar el concierto, se prendieron las luces y
entonces se dan cuenta que el niño está en el
piano tocando la selección "Twinkle, Twinkle
Little Star."
El maestro apareció en el escenario y se fue
rápidamente al piano.
"Sigue tocando" le susurró al niño.
Inclinándose, Paderewski usando su mano
izquierda comenzó a tocar las teclas de la parte
baja. Pronto su brazo derecho alcanzo el otro
lado, rodeando al niño, para agregar un obbligato
corriente. Juntos, el viejo maestro y el niño tenían
a la multitud embobada.
En nuestras vidas, sin pulir, es el maestro quien
nos rodea y susurra en nuestro oído, "no dejes de
tocar." Y al hacerlo, él aumenta y suplementa
hasta crear una obra de increíble belleza.

Mis Hermanas y Hermanos:
En este Evangelio; El señor que es exigente consigo mismo,
exige tambien valentia en sus seguidores. La Biblia nos trae un
ejemplo en la historia de Eliseo: Dios lo escoje para reemplazar
al profeta Elias en una mission arriesgada la de hablar a un
pueblo infiel al Señor. Eliseo truvo que abandonar a su familia;
apenas tuvo tiempo de despedirse de su anciano padre, tuvo
ademas que desafiar el llamado de Dios que le significaba
sacrificio. Pero aceptó su misión de profeta y nos dio su
ejemplo de amor a Dios y de valor humano. Recordemos que,
como cristianos estamos también llamados a dar testimonio de
nuestra fe en el ambiente adverso que nos rodea, y que puede
ser muchas veces díficil. Compañeros de trabajo o amigos
pueden burlarse de nosotros o no comprendernos. No es fácil
mantener el espíritu en una sociedad materialista y de
comodidades. Eliseo nos enseña cómo hay que seguir a Dios.

PROTEGIENDO LOS NIÑOS
La natación es una manera divertida de
combatir el calor durante el verano.
Los padres deben enseñar a sus hijos sobre la
seguridad acuática, incluso cómo identificar
situaciones incómodas y cómo reaccionar en estos
casos. Aunque usted los está vigilando atentamente
para asegurar que los niños están a La seguridad

Baptism: Pre-baptismal Preparation Classes required for parents and godparents prior
to scheduling Baptism. It is highly recommended parents and godparents attend
classes BEFORE the child is born.
Marriage: Call the parish office at least six (6) months (strongly recommend one (1)
year) in advance to make arrangements.
Anointing of the Sick: Please call the parish office. To schedule a visit by a priest, we
highly recommend that you call early in the illness.
Quinceañeras: Call the parish office at least six (6) months in advance to make arrangements. The young lady must have received the Sacraments of Baptism and First
Eucharist. It is highly recommended that the young lady be enrolled in Confirmation.

PETER’S PENCE

This week, our archdiocese will take up
the Peter’s Pence Collection, which provides
Pope Francis with the
funds he needs to carry
out his charitable works
around the world.
The proceeds benefit
our brothers and sisters
on the margins of society, including victims of
war, oppression, and disasters.
Join our Holy Father as a witness of
charity to those who are suffering.

$205 = Year 2
If you wish to register your child for Year
2 of the Sacrament Preparation, please
bring your completed We Believe workbook.

without the completed workbook.
