From the Desk of Fr. Lieu Vu, Parochial Vicar…
On Friday March 13th, 2015 Pope Francis announced a Special Jubilee Year,
the Year of Mercy, starting December 8th, 2015 on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception ending November 20th, 2016 the Feast of Christ the King.
During this special Jubilee Year the church focuses on the forgiveness and
mercy of God.
“Forgiveness is possible once we discover
that goodness is always prior to
and more powerful than evil,
and the word with which God affirms our life
is deeper than our denial.”
Pope Francis, Lumen Fidei, no. 55
(Continued Page 3…)
negaciones.”
Papa Francisco, Lumen Fidei, no. 55

FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT
STEWARDSHIP IN SCRIPTURE
BY DEACON RICK HAECKEL
It’s almost impossible not to be overwhelmed by
the Gospel story of the Prodigal Son (or as many
have said, the Prodigal Father). We are people
who see rewards as having been earned by dint
of our efforts. The story almost seems to be
written in a foreign language, one we don’t speak
but yet we understand. Such an unexpected
audience, “Tax collectors and sinners were all
drawing near to listen to Jesus, but the
Pharisees and scribes began to complain…” The
outcasts are drawn to hear Jesus’ word of life but
the learned, those who feel “better than” want to
be the audience… even though they look only for
words which reinforce what they believe and
miss the meaning of universal love. In a quiet
Lenten moment ponder which camp we occupy
or rather in which camp we spend the most time
for we live in both. Lent is a good time to admit
our shortcomings (usually in the learned camp)
and seek to be one of “the least ones” whose
vision isn’t clouded by personal biases but seeks
the light of Christ. It’s not hard but our humanity
can and does get in the way. In truth, simplicity is
the secret, being open to unexpected and
unearned insight. The Word made flesh is food
for all and when we are at our best it is our joy to
share in the meal. Not to consume and hold but
to become the Prodigal father, so free from
attachments that we realize our joy in the sharing
of ourselves. Not just our “things” but our hearts,
our wonder, our God given grace poured out in a
never ending celebration.
GREEN TIP OF THE WEEK
Ever think about where the “disposable” utensils we
get with take-out food end up? Some are recyclable
but most head to the landfill as trash. Try using your
own utensils, it means remembering to take them with
us (or have them in the car) but … no waste.
HAVE YOU MOVED?
Have you moved recently and need to update
your mailing information with the parish? Email
us at [email protected], drop us a note in the
Sunday collection or call us at (408) 779-3959.
We need your complete name, old & new address and your new telephone number if that
has changed. Don’t miss out on all the great
news we mail/email to our parishioners!
FROM THE DESK OF FR. LIEU
CONTINUED......
The season of Lent is all about conversion--changing our hearts and turning away from sin
and toward God. Our sacramental practices, such
as reconciliation, help us change old habits and
lead life differently than before. We undertake this
journey not just as individuals but also as a
community.
“It is called the Sacrament of Reconciliation,
Because it imparts to the sinner the life of God
who reconciles: ‘Be reconciled to God’”
(2 Cor: 5:20/Catechism of the Catholic Church,
no. 1424)
The sacrament of Reconciliation celebrates God’s
action in our lives; the reality of God’s forgiveness.
It also celebrates what God hopes for us---to be a
forgiving and reconciling people. In light of God’s
unconditional love for us we realize that we fall
short, get lost, and miss the mark---that is, we sin
in our living and our loving. We repent, ask for
forgiveness, and take actions to put things right.
Perhaps our biggest challenge with this sacrament
is to truly believe that we can be, and are,
forgiven.
Here at St. Catherine Parish, we celebrate the
sacrament of Reconciliation regularly on Saturday
from 4:00-5:00 p.m., and on Wednesday evening
during Lent from 6:00-8:00 p.m.. We especially
invite you to our Lenten Penance Service on
Monday, March 7th, at 7:00pm.
This is an
opportunity in which you will have a chance to
experience God’s forgiveness of your sins and to
feel good about yourself. Come and celebrate.
Welcome!
Our warmest welcome to all who
celebrate with us, whether long-time residents
or newly arrived in the parish. We thank God
for you. If you are not registered, please fill out
this form and place it in the collection basket or
mail it to the parish office.

REFLECTION:
We are journeying toward the
Promised Land, toward the justice and peace of
the Kingdom of God. The Israelites in the first reading, Jos. 5:912, reach the land promised
them by God, celebrating the
Passover in remembrance of
their delivery from slavery in
Egypt. Jesus in the Gospel, Lk.
15:1-3, 11-32, welcomes sinners
and eats with them. In the second reading, 2 Cor. 5:17-21, St.
Paul tells us that whoever is in Christ is a new creation.
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION:
If there is such a thing as a Catholic
“trademark” it is the sign of the cross,
first traced on the senses of Catechumens as they begin the journey to baptism or on the forehead of an infant who
is brought to the doors of the church at
baptism.
As early as the third century Christians were tracing the sign of the cross on their bodies. At first the
cross was traced on the forehead during times of
prayer and daily occupations. We use a similar
small cross today as we trace the cross over on the
forehead, lips, and heart at the Gospel during
Mass. Much later, the full-body sign traced from
forehead to heart to shoulders took shape, perhaps
copying the priest’s gesture of blessing with the
consecrated host during Mass. Today this superb
baptismal gift is a sign of belonging to Christ and
the community, a way of focusing our attention, of
asking for God’s blessing, or tracing on our shoulders a willingness to find meaning in life’s burdens.
In the sign of the cross, we have an ever-available
means of expressing gratitude of our baptism.

work. It is vital to invest time to insure that your
life’s efforts continue your causes and support
the people who most treasure your gifts.

you live your life today will be carried on in the
future? Contact Anna Quinones for more information [email protected].

Venga a celebrar.

esto nos llena de alegría.

FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT
Adult Faith Formation
for the parish of St Catherine
Gestures & Postures at Eucharist
General Instruction for the Roman Missal
A bow signifies reverence and honor shown to the
persons themselves or to the signs that represent
them. There are two kinds of bow: a bow of the
head and a bow of the body [profound]. The faithful
who do not kneel [during the Eucharistic Prayer]
ought to make a profound bow when the Priest genuflects after the Consecration. When receiving Holy
Communion, the communicant bows his or her head
before the Sacrament as a gesture of reverence
and receives the Body of the Lord from the minister.
At the words “and by the Holy Spirit . . . and became
man” [of the Creed] all make a profound bow; but on
the Solemnities of the Annunciation and of the Nativity of the Lord, all genuflect. (#275, 43, 160, 137)
Bowing
There three times during Mass when the faithful
bow.
1. Body bow: At the words of the Creed (and by
the Holy Spirit . . . and became man)
2. Body bow: when the priest genuflects at the
Consecration
3. Head bow: before receiving Holy Communion.
Hand-usage
There are no instructions for the faithful regarding any hand gestures. But nothing prohibits any
hand gestures. Even the manner of the Sign of
Peace is not prescribed, but rather left to be established by the Bishops according to “the culture and customs of the peoples.” And applause
is neither called for nor forbidden.
So does this mean it is ok to hold hands during
the Our Father or to use the “orans” gesture
(hands up-lifted like the priest) during various
prayers of the Mass? Generally yes. But two
general rules apply: (1) any use of hands must
be appropriate for liturgy; (2) liturgical prayer
should express our unity as a community.

FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT
Head on over to Mr. Pickle’s in the Cochrane Plaza across from Staples this Tuesday, March 8th.
And don’t be thrown off by the “Pickles” if you don’t like pickles (I don’t) - the sandwiches are fantastic.
No need for a flyer, just go in and mention you’re there for the fundraiser. We really appreciate all of
you who go month after month - it’s such a huge help! But lately the numbers haven’t been as they
used to be - if you have any ideas or reasons why this might be please let me know! If I need to do
something differently, let me know! This can be a great way to raise funds for our Confirmation retreats, but only if we get a good number to go (and the restaurants are more willing when they get a
good amount of business).
LOS ANGELES
RELIGIOUS
EDUCATION
CONGRESS
Every year we take leaders to LA for
the Religious Education Congress.
It’s a time for renewal for our leaders
so they may be fed and be better
prepared to feed those they serve.
Some of us started off with a beautiful day in Disneyland! Others went to
Youth Day to check out the high energy events. The rest of the weekend (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday)
were filled with keynotes, great music and liturgies and workshops. It
was a wonderful time of rest and renewal. I’m so thankful to all those
who serve to make our ministries not
only possible, but successful as well.

FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT
Passing on the Faith
Family Faith Formation at St. Catherine’s Church
Friday, March 11
Try for A Lenten Moment
If you are feeling discouraged because your Lenten
efforts have been less than stellar, don’t lose heart.
Lent is not a pass/fail class. Rather it is a journey of
becoming closer to God through prayer, sacrifice,
and generosity. Seeing Lent only as a 40-day block
can prevent us from taking advantage of Lenten moments - opportunities that arise each day for us to
deepen our relationship with God.
Here are just a few:
Prayer. Between now and Easter, look for 5 minute
moments alone with your spouse and/or your child.
Face each other, hold hands, and ask what he or
she is most worried about. Then together pray an
Our Father, slowly, for that worry. Then do the same
for your worry, followed by a prayer of gratitude from
each of you.
Friday, March 18
(Hosted by the Italian Catholic Federation and
Middle School Ministry for St. Joseph’s Table)
6:00 pm
Join us as we gather as a parish community to
share a simple meal of meatless soup and bread on
March 11th and 18th in the Parish Center. It is an
opportunity to remember those who go without on a
regular basis, as well as to unite as one group with
a common purpose.
HOW TO GET INVOLVED
We are in need of soup and bread each Friday.
Those who wish to bring food donations and/or help
serve can sign up on I-Volunteer. Soup can be
made at home and brought (heated) to the Parish
Center kitchen by 5:45pm. Our Lenten Soup Suppers will be followed by Stations of the Cross at
7:00.
Sacrifice. Try a focused, one-to three-day fast from
something you truly enjoy, but for a purpose. Give
up social media for three days straight and pray for
your oldest child. For children, maybe they can give
up their electronic devices or playing with their favorite toy. They can then offer a prayer for those in our
community who lack basic needs.
Generosity. Generosity can be practiced in small
moments throughout the day—flowers for a teacher,
a plate of cookies for an elderly neighbor, a thankyou note to someone who inspired or encouraged
you recently.

IN MEMORIAM DONATIONS—
IN LIEU OF FLOWERS
A donation in memory of a loved one is a meaningful way to express sympathy to the bereaved
family and to honor the one who passed. It is
also an opportunity for family and friends to support the parish of the loved one in recognition of
the Church’s presence and assist the Church to
carry on spiritual programs and charitable
works. When you choose to make a Memorial
gift to honor a loved one, we notify the family
and a tax receipt is issued for your generous
gift.

A SUNDAY FOR REJOICING
Today’s Gospel story of the prodigal son is a
favorite of many. We can identify with all the
major figures and their crisscross of emotions.
The father’s initial grief over his young son’s avarice is turned to relief at his return. The son’s
grief over his loss of fortune, family, and friends
is turned to delirious joy at the sight of his father.
We understand the eldest son’s bewilderment over his father’s generosity. For the older
son, virtue seems not to be its own reward. For
all his honorable toil and loyalty, there seems to
be no celebration. The father, however, is prodigal in his forgiveness and mercy. He expects
the same generosity from his older son. He
wants all to rejoice when the lost one is found.
This is a Sunday for rejoicing. It’s time to
pause, consider, and encourage one another.
We are the prodigal children heading home. We
are the elder siblings waiting with the eager Father, who scans the horizon. In Christ Jesus we
are reconciled to the Father and one another. In
his death and resurrection we have passed
over. We are a new creation. In this we rejoice.

FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT
St. Catherine School News
STATIONS OF THE CROSS
Join the students of St. Catherine
School for Stations of the Cross
every Thursday during Lent at 2:30
in the church. All are welcome!
Third graders were very excited to receive
dictionaries from Morgan Hill Rotary!
DICTIONARIES FOR 3RD GRADE
Morgan Hill Rotary has an annual project of
providing every third grader in Morgan Hill with
a beautiful dictionary. Rotarians presented the
dictionaries to the third graders of St. Catherine
a couple of weeks ago. The students were
thrilled with the books and quickly thumbed
through them to find definitions, maps, and lot of
great facts! A huge thank you to the Rotary
Club of Morgan Hill! Our students will benefit
from their generous gift for many years to come.
Rotarian and MH Police Chief, David Swing, talked with
students about how to use their new dictionaries. He
showed them the many features of the dictionary and
gave them time to search through words and the interesting reference section. Two other Rotarians accompanied
Chief Swing.
Bishop McGrath came for his annual visit to St.
Catherine School in February. He visited each
classroom and answered a myriad of questions from
students. Bishop McGrath celebrated mass with
students, staff and parents, then enjoyed a delicious
luncheon prepared by third grade parents.
ANNUAL APPEAL—
A Legacy of Faith 2015-2016
The eleventh Annual Appeal is well on its way! The
school’s goal is to raise $65,000 this year. We are
now at the halfway point. You can still help! For
more information regarding our Appeal, please contact Jeff Layne, Development Director at
[email protected] or 779-9950.
Funds
raised from our Annual Appeal help bridge the gap
between tuition and the cost of educating each student, as well as providing funds for new programs
and tuition assistance.
