New York University in Buenos Aires Department of Spanish Intensive Elementary Spanish SPAN-UA 9010.002 Instructors: Guadalupe Molina: Mon Tue [email protected] Inda Dinerstein: Wed Thur [email protected] Fall 2011 (Aug.- Dec.) Mon to Thu 11.15 am– 1.15 pm Room: TBA Office hours (Faculty Room) Guadalupe: Tuesday 10 –11 am Inda: Thursday 10-11 am 1. Course Description Course objectives Intensive Elementary Spanish is designed for students with no previous knowledge of Spanish and consists of four classes per week. The class meets Monday through Thursday for 120 minutes each day. Our immediate and ultimate goal is communication in Spanish, which is emphasized in all our classroom activities by using all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Attendance Policy NYU Buenos Aires has a strict policy about course attendance. No unexcused absences are permitted. Students should contact their class teachers to catch up on missed work but should NOT approach them for excused absences. Absences due to illness must be discussed with the Assistant Director for Academics Affairs, María Pirovano Peña within one week of your return to class. A doctor note excusing your absence is mandatory. If students get sick on an exam day, they must let the Assistant Director for Academic Affairs know in advance about this, and they must see a doctor the same day in order to have their absence excursed. Absence requests for non-illness purposes must be discussed with the Assistant Director for Academics Affairs, María Pirovano Peña prior to the date(s) in question. Intensive Language Courses: unexcused absences will be penalized by deducting 1.5% from the student’s final course mark. Students who had perfect attendance during the semester and full filled all the course requirements, i.e. class participation, met all the deadlines, etc. will get extra points equivalent to the 2 % of the final grade. Students are responsible for making up any work missed due to absence. NYU BA also expects students to arrive to class promptly (both at the beginning and after any breaks) and to remain for the duration of the class. Three late arrivals or earlier 1 departures (10 minutes after the starting time or before the ending time) will be considered one absence. Each class has a duration of two hours. Missing one class represents one absence. Please note that for classes involving a field trip or other external visit, transportation difficulties are never grounds for an excused absence. It is the student’s responsibility to arrive at an agreed meeting point in a punctual and timely fashion. Holidays’ make up classes are mandatory as regular scheduled classes. Textbooks Puntos de Partida 8th ed. by Knorre et al.; Workbook (selection) Class participation is a key element in language learning, and is also a very important factor in your grade. If you are absent, you cannot participate and your grade will be lowered. Regardless of the nature of their absences, students will be held responsible for all work missed as well as for that which is due the following class (including preparation for exams). This means that if you are absent, it is your responsibility to show your instructor the homework due on the day(s) that you missed as well as the one due on the day you are in class. Participation and preparation refer to your attendance and contribution to class activities. Participation means voluntary contribution to the class—do not wait to be asked. Your contributions should be informed and reflect the fact that you have studied the material. The grade will also respond to questions such as: Do you take part in the various exercises? Do you attempt to correct your own errors when using the language? Do you consistently speak Spanish in class? English is not allowed in this course. Classes will be conducted in Spanish. You are required to bring to every class the Puntos de Partida textbook and workbook. Since there will be little formal presentation of the grammar in class, students are expected to read each lesson carefully, learn the vocabulary for each chapter and do the grammar exercises listed in the course schedule as homework before coming to class. The instructor will be counting on this, and his/her main job will be to clarify doubts, exceptions and difficult cases. There will be a large amount of homework and preparation each day, so make sure to keep up with all assignments. You will have to spend a minimum of 2 hours per day in order to keep up with the fast pace of the class. Assignments WORKBOOK: Workbook assignments will be checked for completion on a daily basis. The exercises in the workbook should be self-corrected in a contrasting ink color using the key. Note 2 that for some of the exercises, answers are not included in the key. MI DIARIO: At the end of each chapter in the Workbook there is an exercise called “Mi Diario”(My Diary- MD). You will have to turn in 8 “Mi Diario”(MD) entries. A typical entry should be at least 150 words, except for the very first chapters. The first one is done in class, the others should be typed and double-spaced. Late or incomplete homework will NOT be credited. You will turn in the second version of your assignment the day after your instructor reviews, comments, and returns the first version of “Mi diario” to you. You'll find the instructions on each MD in Blackboard. BLACKBOARD HOMEWORK: Occasionally, students will be provided with additional homework uploaded on the Blackboard of the course. Blackboard homework should be printed and prepared for the dates marked on the course schedule, and it will be checked in class. QUIZZES: A five-minute quiz will be administered occasionally, generally to test verb forms. Quiz days are marked on the course schedule, but your instructor may assign additional ones as she sees fit. No make-up quizzes will be given, but one will be dropped. SITUACIONES: These are short dialogues that you will write and perform with a partner in front of the class. You will be assigned a situation, and you and your partner will write a skit to be performed during class. It is usually very entertaining. 2. Examinations There will be eight in-class tests during the semester. No make-up tests will be given. Be sure to attend class on the day of the test. There will be one midterm exam on the date stated on the course schedule and one final comprehensive exam after the last week of class. Midterm or final Exam dates cannot be changed under any circumstance. Unexcused absences from exams are not permitted and will result in failure of the exam. If you are granted an excused absence from examination (with authorization, as above), your instructors will decide how you will make-up it. Written work due in class must be submitted during the class time to the professor. 3 3. Final grading The final grade will be determined as follows: Participation and preparation Homework Mi Diario Quizzes Situaciones Tests Midterms Final Exam 20% 15% 15% 5% 5% 20% 10% 10% The final grade will be assigned according to the following scale. 100-93 92-90 89-87 86-83 82-80 79-77 A AB+ 76-73 72-70 69-67 B BC+ C CD+ 66-60 59-0 D F 4. Tutoring Spanish Tutoring Sessions are mandatory for all students who get a B- or below in any written or oral work. Professors will let the students know when they need to take Spanish tutoring sessions. They also will inform the Language Coordinator Prof. Silvia Luppino. Spanish Tutors will decide the frequency and quantity of sessions needed by each student. Students must enroll in the tutoring sessions with Prof. Silvia Luppino on the third floor. Absences should be informed via email the day before in order to allow other students to use the tutoring services. 5. Blackboard This course has been designed with an NYU Blackboard site. It is imperative that all students get an NYU e-mail account, so all can access the Blackboard.
