Mi visita a La Silla
EI Director General de la ESO, Harry van
der Laan, me invito a La Silla como consultor
duranIe el periode de la realuminizacion y el
ajustamienlo oplico dei telescopio Schmidl
de la ESO. Esta invilacion me alegro mucho
porque no solo me dio la oportunidad de
estar un tiempo en el telescopio Schmidl,
sino lambien de encontrarme con muchos
amigos en Chile. Ya en el aeropuerto de
Tobalaba en Santiago, a la salida hacia la
monlaiia, me enconlre con algunos de mis
antiguos colegas, Daniel Hofstadl y su esposa Sonia, Wolfgang y Suse Eckert, Erich
Schumann, Nelson Labrin, Bernardo Leon y
al astronomo frances Fran<;:ois Spite. Mientras viajaba desde el aeropuerto de Pelicano
hacia La Silla en un confortable coche, mis
pensamientos remontaron al aiio 1964 cuando demoraba 5 horas y media a caballo desde Pellcano hasta La Silla.
La Silueta de La Silla ha cambiado considerablemente con la inslalacion dei SEST y
dei edificio para el ND. Eche de menos el
telescopio suizo y 10 vine a descubrir mas
tarde cerca de mi dormitorio. Creo que los
astronomos suizos deben de gozar la cercania al holel.
Fue lindisimo trabajar nuevamenle junto a
Hans Schuster, Guido y Oscar Pizarro en el
telescopio Schmidl. La mantencion realizada
por el personal lecnico camino sin problemas. EI unico obstaculo fue el tiempo; dura
baslanle tomar las placas necesarias para
los distintos tests. Sin embargo, logramos
con exilo un bastante buen ajustamiento dei
telescopio.
Durante mi estadia en La Silla fui por primera vez a Coquimbo y La Serena con Erich
Schumann para presenciar la compra de los
comestibles. Vi con sorpresa las impresionantes cantidades de comida que se lransportan semanalmente a la montaiia. Uno casi
no se da cuenta dei trabajo involucrado hasla
que se encuenlra la comida servida.
Deseo agradecer a lodos aquellos que me
proporcionaron una estadia lan agradable en
La Silla.
