418pp, 100 x 150mm. Curtio Navo et Fratelli, 1538. Later (possibly 18th century) rebinding
in ivory vellum on boards, with gilt title on small brown leather label at head of spine. Firm
and tight. Printer's large woodblock devices to title-page and to end-page. Minor worming on
inner margins, visible on approx 20 pages, text not affected. Single lines underlined in
preface and First Book (on approx. 4 pages), two signatures at bottom of two preliminary
pages, minor ancient ink-spots on a few pages, else clean and fine throughout. Overall, a very
good example of a very early 16th century uncommon edition (published within ten years of
the first edition) of one of the most influential books in European literature. The Book of the
Courtier (Il Cortegiano) is based upon the happenings at the Court of Duke Guidolbado
Montefeltro of Urbino, where he describes the ideal court and courtier with detailed
references to the philosophical discussions that occurred at Urbino, defining the ideal

290mm. Double column text, without illustrations. Index. Title page in black. Full limp
ivory vellum, contemporary manuscript title on spine, yapp edges and remains of ties.
Contemporary signature to top of front free end-paper. Bottom rear corner of vellum binding
with small loss (4cm x 2cm) probably biodepradation (un ratón?). Spine and boards waved
and soiled. Edges and pages lightly yellowed with very light scattered foxing, staining.to
bottom edge of approx. 12 pages of preface. 2 tiny tears to top of spine. Binding still tight

written by Spain's Official Chronicler of the Indies, Antonio de Solis (1610-1686). It is
considered to be a Spanish prose classic and has been extensively reprinted and translated.
