If you have a registered parishioner to add to our
prayer list, please contact the executive assistant in the

remove a name from the list. Please inscribe the
names of non-parishioners (e.g. family members,
friends, neighbors, co-workers) in the prayer intention
book found in the church vestibule. Please inscribe
their name only once as their needs will be
remembered at Masses throughout the year.
If you are hospitalized or homebound and would like
to receive Communion, please call Pat & Gary Boylan
at 941-204-7837.
You may also contact someone from the Eucharistic
Apostles of Divine Mercy who will pray the Chaplet of
Divine Mercy or other prayers with you. Please call
Lillian Pente at 843-705-7170.
When we were growing up, my siblings and I would
often ask our grandmother to tell us stories about our
mother when she was young. We liked listening to our
mother tell those same stories from her perspective.
The stories varied in some details, but it always felt like
a veil was lifted on the past and we had some sense of
where we came from along with some insight about our
mother’s personality.
She, of course, did the same thing for my daughters,
making them giggle at the
story of my getting into her
perfume bottle when I was
three. Such stories connect
us with the people we know.
Old friends trade stories
of shared experiences; young
companions learn about the
world from the stories of their
elders and even from the
stories their friends tell them
about their lives.
In Acts, Peter appeals to his listeners by telling the
story they know so well. He even appeals to their
shared experience as he says, “You know…” (v. 36).
Stories connect us to one another and open the door to
understanding each other a little more and a little
better. In his story, Peter marks the baptism of Jesus
as the beginning of his ministry. Our story in the
Christian community begins with baptism as well. Peter
records that Jesus went on “doing good and healing all
those oppressed by the devil, for God was with him” (v.
38). What would the story of our lives after baptism tell
people about us? Would someone like Peter tell people
that we went about doing good and loving God and
neighbor?

Feast of the Baptism of the Lord
Fittingly, this Jubilee Year of Mercy is also the Lectionary’s Year of Luke, for Luke’s Gospel highlights God’s
mercy in finding the lost, healing the sick, restoring the broken, comforting the sorrowful, forgiving the sinner
through Jesus’ ministry. But before doing, Luke’s Jesus is always praying. As practical moderns programmed to
measure worth by productivity, we instinctively appreciate the Jubilee’s call to embrace the practical challenges of
our baptism. But today Luke focuses not on Jesus being baptized, but on Jesus praying after baptism. So must
we pray to become the disciples we are called to be, that the Spirit empower us to do what disciples are called to
do. Imitating Jesus’ openness to the Spirit will enable us to cooperate with the grace that transforms us into
“beloved sons [and daughters] . . . in whom the Father is well pleased,” living out, in this Jubilee Year of Mercy,
the extraordinary potential of our baptism.

Essentials of Elder Law &
Estate Planning: It’s Not Just Wills
St. Andrew Hall
January 14, 2016
2:00 p.m.—4:00 p.m.
Elder Law Attorney, Brian Tracy, will discuss the most
common estate planning tool is a Will. However,
estate planning is more than just having a good Will; it
also involves having effective Powers of Attorney;
protecting against incapacity, catastrophic costs of
nursing homes, unscrupulous heirs, disabled heirs,
probate, trusts (revocable and irrevocable) and the
potential problems that can arise in estate planning
with blended families. Learn the basics of Elder Law
101 and why Elder Law is more than just having a
“simple will.”

The better we understand Jesus, the better we
understand ourselves. But who was Jesus, this
itinerant preacher whom many called the Messiah?
In Priest, Prophet, King, you’ll discover Jesus as the
Anointed One–the ultimate priest, prophet, and king
foreshadowed throughout the Hebrew Scriptures.
Using biblical insights and engaging stories, Bishop
Barron affirms that we see Jesus most clearly
through the lens of the Old Testament.
Through this deeply biblical program, you will better
understand Jesus, become more familiar with
Scripture, and realize your own priestly, prophetic,
and kingly mission, received when you are baptized
“into Christ.”
Registration forms can be found on our website,
Parish office or Church Literature rack, or
contact Gundy Dahm at 843-379-6767.

CHRISTIAN OUTREACH
Welcome New Parishioners
January 23, 2016
9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
St. Gregory the Great Catholic School Library
Presented by Deacon Denny Burkett
“But where sin increased, grace increased all the more.”
Romans 5:20
Entering into this Jubilee Year of Mercy and looking
ahead the Penitential Season of Lent, we take a look at
sin, how we can overcome its effect through the gift of
God’s grace, and that God’s grace is not an excuse to sin
but rather a reason to love and serve Him more fully.
Please RSVP to the parish office 843-815-3100 ext 321
if you plan to attend.
