Puede que sea la lengua más
antigua de Europa, ya que su origen
es todavía un misterio. Puede que
sus raíces no tengan nada que
ver con el resto de lenguas que
le rodean, ya que es una lengua
preindoeuropea y aislada. Puede
que sea la primera lengua en dar
la vuelta al mundo en boca de
Juan Sebastián Elcano… Lo único
indudablemente cierto es que
un millón de personas hablan,
escriben y twitean en euskera, lo
usan para enamorarse, enfadarse,
ver la televisión o escribir tesis
doctorales… ya sea en su versión
unificada creada a partir de 1968,
o en alguno de sus cinco dialectos.

Si en la obra Merry Wives of Windsor
(1602), Shakespeare alababa el acero
vasco con el que se forjaban
las espadas, hoy en día, son
los destellos del titanio del
Museo Bilbao Guggenheim
los que seducen a los
visitantes.
The Basque society has its origins in
stone farmhouses in green valleys,
small fishing villages and busy coastal
shipyards, the iron mines and mills
of the Margen Izquierda in Bilbao,
industry and tourism. All of these
are at once present in a territory that
although small in size, is large in it’s
ambitions. Tradition and modernity
are at the heart of what moves the
ever innovative Basque society, and if
in the Merry Wives of Windsor (1602)
Shakespeare sings praise to the
gleaming Basque iron from which the
finest swords were forged, then today
it is the bright titanum of the Museo
Guggenheim Bilbao which reflects the
Basques equally bright future.

Basque Language
It may be the oldest language
in Europe, as its origin is still a
mystery. Its roots may have nothing
to do with the other languages
that surround it, as it is a preindoeuropean isolated language.
It could be the first language that
circled the globe in the mouth of
Juan Sebastian Elcano ... The only
thing undoubtedly certain is that
one million people speak, write and
tweet in Euskera, they fall in love,
they argue, they watch TV or write
PhD theses… either in its unified
version created since 1968, or in
one of its five dialects.

de los vascos que era ese pueblo
que baila y brinca a los pies del
Pirineo. Hoy seguimos sin resistirnos
a la melodía del txistu, basando
nuestros bailes tradicionales en la

mundura zabaltzeko asmoz.
Etxepare Euskal Institutuak desira
hori betetzen du, euskara eta
euskal kultura mundura hedatzeko
konpromisoari helduz. Horretarako,
Eusko Jaurlaritzaren mendeko
erakunde honek, euskara eta euskal
kultura nazioartean sustatzeko
ekintzak burutu, diru-laguntzak
kudeatu eta irakurletza programak
bultzatzen ditu, besteak beste.
En 1545, Bernard Etxepare escribió
el libro llamado Linguae Vasconum
Primitiae, el primer libro en lengua
vasca, con el objeto de promocionar
el euskera. El Instituto Etxepare
cumple con ese deseo y tiene el firme
compromiso de impulsar la lengua
y cultura vascas por el mundo. Con
ese fin, esta entidad dependiente
del Gobierno Vasco, lleva a cabo
diferentes acciones de promoción
y difusión cultural, gestiona
subvenciones e impulsa programas de
lectorados en universidades de todo
el mundo.
In 1545, Bernard Etxepare wrote
a book called Linguae Vasconum
Primitiae, the first book in Basque,
with the aim to promote our language.
The Etxepare Basque Institute is
making that wish to come true,
and is committed to promoting the
Basque language and culture all over
the world. With that goal in mind,
this body which is dependent on
the Basque government carries out
different activities aimed at promoting
and diffusing the Basque language
and culture, organising grants, and
sponsoring lecturer programmes in
universities all over the world.

The French philosopher Voltaire wrote
about the Basques that they were
those people who danced and jumped
at the foot of the Pyrenees. Today
we still dance with the melody of the
“txistu”, basing our traditional dances
in classical dance and fusing it with
the contemporary.

Ahosabaiaren gutizia finenak zotz batek

Los vascos bien sabemos que más
vale poco a menudo que mucho rara
vez; a pesar de ser amantes de mesas
opíparas, ¿qué sería de nosotros sin
nuestras rondas de taberna en taberna
con sus néctares y “pintxos”? Un palillo
engarza las exquisiteces más deliciosas
para el paladar; ¡de ahí el nombre de
“pintxo”!
Basques know that it’s far better to get
just a little bit often rather than a lot
occasionally; we do love sumptuous
tables, but what would become of us
without our tavern rounds, drinks and
“pintxos”? The most delicious delicacies
for the palate simply joined together
with a toothpick; hence the name
“pintxo”!
