CHANGE OUR LIVES
In today’s first reading, Jonah, sent by God to warn the
people, storms through Nineveh, frightening the citizens out
of their wits. It works! They repent before Jonah makes his
way through a third of the city, and God sees “by their actions” how they have turned from evil.
Then we hear Paul telling the Corinthians that “the
world in its present form is passing away.” He calls for a
change of heart. He stops short of telling them to set aside
their everyday lives, but still he urges them—rather mysteriously—to live as though they aren’t doing the things they’re
doing.
Finally, Jesus stands on the shore and cries, “The kingdom of God is at hand!” The apostles-to-be abandon their
nets and follow him. Thus in all the readings we hear an
invitation to a radical and immediate change in our lives.

Archbishop’s Appeal: The 2015 Archbishop’s Appeal pledge
weekend will take place Feb. 21-22. The campaign goal is
$4,500,000, and the goals for our Catholic Community are
$9,606 for St. James; $3,912 for Sacred Heart and $1,482 for St.
Patrick. We can assure the continued existence of many important programs that help tens of thousands in our Archdiocese
each year; education of our children and seminary students, care
of the sick and needy are among them.
This Monday, January 26, a letter from the Archbishop will be
sent out asking for your gift/pledge to support the ministries of
the Archdiocese of San Antonio. This mailing gives all registered parishioners an opportunity to contribute to the Appeal,
especially those who may be unable to attend Mass. Please give
prayerful consideration to your level of support to help fund the
essential ministries and services supported by the Appeal. To
learn more about the Appeal, visit www.archsaappeal.org.
A great Thank You goes out to all who have supported the Appeal so generously over the past year. Rebate checks of
$7,656.50 were received a few days ago for St. James, and another $465.00 for St. Patrick, who exceeded their goals. Sacred
Heart fell just short of its goal this past year, and will make a
renewed effort to achieve it this year. -- Fr. Paul
St. Patrick News: Come, one and all, to our monthly meal to
be held this afternoon (Sunday) at St. Patrick’s hall. If you can,
bring a covered dish of salad, rice, veggies or dessert to go with
the meat provided by the parish. Also - Our St. Patrick Storage
Shed has been completed, and should provide adequate storage
for years to come. Workers are needed to transfer all our items
from M-J Storage to the new facility, this afternoon (Sunday)
after the meal at St. Patrick. The steel shed, built at the site of
the old church, was completed by Mr. Clay Boscamp and his
workers at a cost of $35,000, and was paid from parish funds.
Youth Liturgy Today at St. Patrick; please continue to encourage and affirm our high schoolers who are serving as greeters,
lectors and musicians at the 11:30 mass today.
Part-Time Help Needed: Custodian for St. Patrick Church.
Job includes regular cleaning of St. Patrick Hall and Church and
minor maintenance items. Estimated time - 10 hours per week.
Call our office, 672-2945, for application, and to speak with
Father Paul for more information.
Liturgy News: Thanks to those who have committed to serve
our Gonzales community as Lectors and Eucharistic Ministers,
and to all of you for your prayers for us in this time of renewal.
A Liturgy Committee Meeting to plan for Lent and Easter will
be held this Thursday, 7 pm in the Conference Room. Lectors
new and old - remember our gathering this Saturday, January 31,
9-10:30 (english) at St. James, and 10:30-12 (spanish) at Sacred
Heart.
Lenten Plans: Plans are beginning for Parish Missions to be
held during Lent this year; more information should be forthcoming soon. Tentative dates for the Missions are the week of
March 15 for St. James and Sacred Heart, and the week of
March 22 for St. Patrick. I am also planning a gathering each
Friday of Lent, 10:30 am in the St. John Paul Room at St. James,
to study the Passion Narratives in the gospels, and other biblical
themes of Lent. Lent begins Feb. 18! Fr. Paul
