It is unimaginable to think of one part of the equation without the other springing immediately to mind. But what almost no-one stops to wonder about is how those bananas reach dining tables all across Spain. The answer is very simple: around 70% of the island’s banana crop is transported ques de ACCIONA Trasmediterranea. This is, to a large extent, the result of an agreement in place between the shipping line and COPLACA, the Canary Islands Banana Growers Co-operative, recently extended until 2017. The agreement also covers road haulage services provided by ACCIONA’s logistics division alongside other operators partnering with the co-operative, such as Transfrigo Canarias and Contegal. “Things have to be done very well”, stresses the president of COPLACA, Antonio Suárez. “By now, we have the best transportation and the fruit reaches consumers in very good conditions thanks to the refrigerated trailers”. Without a doubt the competition from countries of Africa, the Pacific and the Caribbean is forcing growers to outdo themselves day after day to Un fruto tratado con mimo, desde su nacimiento en la planta hasta la llegada a la mesa !" fng]hmkZlf^]bm^kkg^Z tener sus estándares de calidad. And in this regard, transportation is a vital element. COPLACA, representing 17 co-operatives and 5,000 farmers, was the first organization to use the seaborne route to ensure the crop reached its destination in optimal condition. All of its production is loaded onto the ACCIONA Trasmediterranea ships connecting the Canary Islands to Cádiz: the José María Entrecanales and the Albayzín, with capacity for over 300 refrigerated trailers. In 2012, this came to a total of 6,000 lorries travelling up and down. But this figure is set to climb in 2013 by 16.5% to reach at least 7,000. For ACCIONA Trasmediterranea too, it is a cargo of enormous importance. The company’s General Manager, Ignacio Aguilera, has no doubts on the subject: “It is a fundamental economic pillar for the business. We are always involved in trade traffic and bananas, thanks to their sheer volume, are going to remain our key cargo on the Islands”.
