Birthday Celebration for Fr. Bruce Wellems Benefited Youth Programs
in Back of the Yards
Festejo de Cumpleaños del Padre Bruce Wellems Benefició Programas para Jóvenes en Back of the the Yards
On March 8, Texas de Brazil, one of Chicago’s downtown restaurants, became the gathering place for the birthday celebration
of Fr. Bruce Wellems, pastor of Holy Cross Immaculate Heart
of Mary Parish, while raising funds to support youth programs
under his leadership in the Back of the Yards community.
Wellems, who has served at the parish for 23 years, was honored for his overall commitment to driving positive change
through innovative youth programs.
Claudia Rodriguez, a representative of the office of the 12th
Ward, read a resolution proclamation for Wellems in honor of
his hard work in the community. The resolution was going to be
presented to the city council on March 14, according to Rodriguez.
“On behalf of the mayor, Ald. George Cardenas, and Ald. Pat
Dowell, we recognize this inspirational leader, who has done so
much for our community and salute his accomplishments,” she
read.
Using the term “padrino,” also known as godfather, the event
invited potential supporters to become sponsors by supporting
Holy Cross’ vital after school and summer internship programs.
Aside from the commemorating speeches the evening offered
silent and live auctions and an extensive performance by the
unique Holy Cross Marimba ensemble.

El 8 de marzo, Texas de Brazil, un restaurante en el centro de
Chicago, se convirtió en el sitio de reunión para el festejo del cumpleaños del Padre Bruce Wellems, párroco de la Iglesia Santa Cruz,

Voter Registration at its Lowest
Voter registration and turnout
in Chicago have not surpassed the peak
records shown in 1952

It is no surprise; Chicago has shown a decrease in voter registration numbers hitting
the lowest since 1942, at 1.28 million.
“
The fact is that our
voter registration numbers are low especially
when compared to the
census numbers, which
indicates that we had
hundreds of thousands
more U.S. citizens who
are 18 or older who
could register to vote,”
said James P. Allen, communications director of the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners.
According to Allen, many of the losses
are among younger voters between the ages
of 18 to 44. That is where virtually all of the
registration losses have occurred compared
to four years ago. In addition, this large
segment of population has not realized the

need to file an updated registration after
they move.
“That probably has been the biggest defect,” Allen said. “That age group tends to
be the most mobile whereas once people are
in their 40s, 50s and 60s, they are less likely
to be moving from one address to another.
It is not like a bank account. When you
move, you need to update your records.”
Voter registration and turnout numbers
in Chicago have not surpassed the peak records shown in 1952 where 2,212,087 people registered to vote.
Aside from the high mobility rate of certain age groups, Chicago Board of Election
Commissioners Chairman, Langdon Neal,
told the Sun-Times that low-interest races
could also be to blame.
“First, this is an especially low-interest
election for Chicagoans with no presidential
race on the Democratic side. Aside from the
Jesse Jackson Jr.-Debbie Halvorson congressional race, some county and legislative
contests and an important battle for the Illinois Supreme Court, there isn’t much to get
Democratic juices flowing until the general
election in the fall.”
The Chicago Board of Elections also gathered voter registration numbers by ward
and their percentage growth from the 2008
primary elections. The 14th Ward, encompassing parts of Brighton Park, has shown

a 25.7 percent increase – a surprising growth
that could be allocated to the heated 21st District
State Representative race between Latino candidates Silvana Tabares and Rudy Lozano. The
21st State Representative District includes parts
of Brighton Park.
The 12th Ward, which contains a portion of
Back of the Yards, increased by 3.7 percent while
the 25th Ward in Pilsen reported a slight increment of 0.4 percent. The 15th, 16th, and 20th
Wards located in the New City area have all reported a decrease in voter registrations.
Another reason for lower voter registration
is that despite census numbers indicating that
hundreds of thousands more U.S. citizens of age
could register to vote, there has been a continued decrease in the city’s population down to
200 thousand from a decade ago and 900 lower
than in 1952.
However, despite the low numbers, the Chicago Board of Elections hopes to ensure those
registered are able to access their polling places.
On March 7, Neal announced a new, easy way
for Chicago voters to find their March 20 polling
places by sending a simplified version of a voterregistration address in a text.
“This system will help voters with the No.
1 question we hear on Election Day: ‘Where is
my polling place?’ ” Neal said. “The best place
for Chicago voters to find information is chicagoelections.com. But this new text system helps
those who have cell phones but no web access.
It’s a bridge over the digital divide.”
To use the system, Chicago voters must text
only the simplest version of their street address
to 312-361-8846. Soon after, this system will
check the web and reply with a text message with
the March 20 polling place for that address. Chicago voters should include only the simplified
street address, and not include any other information like a unit, city or ZIP Code.
“We do outreach throughout the year, we do
outreach with community groups, we try to remind people of the voter registration deadline,”
said Allen. “We work with news media organizations but ultimately it’s up to individuals
whether or not they register to vote or keep their
registration up to date.”
The Chicago Board of Elections would like to
find a way to register people online to make the
process easier and more accessible.
“We are going to try to come up with a system
that does both things,” said Allen. “ That allows
people to provide us with the information via the
Internet and then we can mail them a form that
they will sign and return. I think we want to go
another step closer to Internet registration. Indiana has full Internet registration –we are not
there in Illinois.”

Voters can play a major role in helping to guarantee clean elections by being on
the alert for unusual activities at or near polling places and reporting irregularities
to election authorities. Some of the more common methods of fraudulent activity
include:
• Vote buying: offering money or gifts to a voter to vote for a specific candidate;
• Chain balloting: taking a previously marked ballot from the polls and passing it to
a voter entering the polls;
• Ghost voting: voting under the name of a deceased person a fictitious name, or a
nonexistent address;
• Altering the figures on the tally sheet during the counting of ballots.
The following are telltale signs that you should be suspicious of:
• Money changing hands in or near the polls.
• Someone passing a folded piece of paper or card to a voter who hides it on his/
her person. NOTE: voters may possess and use sample ballots to assist them while
voting.
• A person claiming to be someone else in order to vote. Also, someone giving an
address or place that you know is an empty lot. Or, if you know a person doesn’t live
at the address which he claims.
• More than one person in a voting booth, except under these circumstances: If a
disabled person signed an affidavit requesting assistance, he may have a friend or
two judges of election (one from each party) assist him.
• Electioneering within the Campaign Free Zone.
• Election Judges from both major parties are not represented in the polling place
where major political parties are listed on the ballot.
• The judges of election are not in control of the polling place; for example, if you
see someone giving orders to the election judges.
Report all complaints to an election judge.

Elections 2012: 1st District State Senate Race

In the 1st District State
Senate race for Democratic
nomination, state Sen. Antonio Muñoz will be running against candidate Adolfo Mondragon.
Muñoz has been in office
since 1999, is the co-founder of the Latino Caucus and
currently serves as majority caucus leader. Before
being an elected official,
Muñoz was a police officer
in the Chicago Police Department.
He was a strong supState Senator Antonio Muñoz
porter of the instate tuition
bill for undocumented
immigrant students and the IHOPE program, which enrolls high
school dropouts in year-round classes.
In 2011 Muñoz sponsored legislation to increase the criminal
charges for the offense of unlawful use of a weapon by a convicted
felon.
Recently, he supported the measure to increase both the earned
income tax credit and the personal exemption on Illinois’ income
tax returns. He recently sponsored a bill that would require a 30day foreclosure notice issued to tenants before the property goes
into foreclosure.
Senate President John Cullerton recently appointed Muñoz to
the position of Majority Caucus Chairman.
“I am proud of my record of service to our neighborhood in the
State Senate,” said Muñoz. “I have always been committed to fighting crime and gangs in our community, that’s why I sponsored
legislation to crackdown on selling guns to felons and minors. In
addition, educating our children must always be a top priority. So
I sponsored legislation to require summer school focused on math
and reading for all children who have fallen two grade levels behind. As State Senator, my focus will always be making our communities safe and our schools top quality.”
Senator Muñoz has been endorsed by the Illinois Personal PAC,
Citizen Action Illinois and the Chicago Teacher’s Union.
A public interest attorney, Adolfo Mondragón is a Yale and Uni-
versity of Chicago graduate. Among Mondragon’s main agenda issues is to transform the culture of corruption in Illinois’ politics and
advocate for tougher campaign finance regulations. Mondragón
wants to increase the number of police on the streets, in addition to
focusing on youth’s mental health and substance abuse problems.
Mondragón was raised in the Back of the Yards. A former altar
boy at Holy Cross -Immaculate Heart of Mary parish, Mondragón
has been the host of a weekly radio program dedicated to mariachi
music on the University of Chicago’s radio station, WHPK 88.5 FM
for the past five years.
Mondragon has been endorsed by the Illinois for Better Government Organization and the Independent Voters of Illinois Independent Precinct Organization; the Chicago Tribune also endorsed
him.
“He would be a strong voice for pension reform and is willing to
make tough spending cuts,” stated the Chicago Tribune.
Mondragón ran against Muñoz in 2010 but Muñoz won by a
large margin.
The 1st District includes parts of New City, Pilsen, Brighton Park,
Gage Park, Lawndale, Little Village, the Lower West Side, McKinley

Un abogado de interés público, Adolfo Mondragón es egresado de
la Universidad Yale y de la Universidad de Chicago. Entre los temas

Brown, Munoz Battle Over Modernization and Best
Practices of Cook County Circuit Court

The Clerk of the Circuit Court race has two
democratic candidates battling over transparency and best management practices.
Longtime Chicago Ald. Ricardo Muñoz will
be facing Cook County Circuit Court Clerk Dorothy Brown in a race where modernization and
best administrative techniques are at stake.
The circuit court files more than 2.4 million
cases every year and is one of the largest court
systems in the world. To accommodate its vast
caseload, the Circuit Court of Cook County is
organized into three functional departments:
County, Municipal and Juvenile Justice and
Child Protection.
As the clerk, Brown, who is running her
fourth term, is the official keeper of records
for all judicial matters. However, her opponent
and the media have questioned her efficiency
and transparency.
Muñoz has criticized the office’s antiquated
system where many important documents go
missing and making copies in carbon paper
continues to be popular.
“I honestly believe that we can do a better
job of administering that office and running
it more efficiently,” said Muñoz to the SunTimes.
When Chicago Tonight asked Brown about
her opponent’s remarks regarding her lack
of wisdom to modernize the system, she answered; “My opponent says that because he
doesn’t understand the court system. I doubt
if he’s ever visited our office to see the kind of
technology we have.”
Brown has been criticized for the use of a
county vehicle for personal errands and a law
enforcement officer as a personal driver.
In her own defense, Brown has stated that
she received death threats, which forced her to
use the services. “I don’t call him a driver, I call
him security.”
In addition, she has been criticized for receiving monetary gifts and campaign contributions from her employees and for the infamous
“Blue Jeans Days” in which her employees
could dress down on Fridays if they paid a certain contribution.
Brown, on the other hand, has criticized
Muñoz for being one of the 40 aldermen who
voted in favor of former Mayor Richard Daley’s
parking meter deal and for not having the necessary experience, as an alderman, to manage
over 2,000 employees at hand.
Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle has endorsed Muñoz, while Gov. Pat
Quinn and Speaker of the House Michael Madigan support Brown.

Brown, por otra parte, ha criticado a Muñoz
por ser uno de los 40 concejales que votó a favor del acuerdo de los parquímetros del ex Alcalde Daley y por no tener la experiencia necesaria, como concejal, para supervisar a más
de 2,000 empleados a su cargo.
La presidenta de la Junta del Condado de
Cook Toni Preckwinkle ha respaldado a Muñoz, mientras que el Gobernador Pat Quinn y

DePaul Students Respond
to Tuition Hikes

With the passing of tuition increases at DePaul University for the 20122013 school year, university students
are taking a stance to prevent further
increases to the cost of their education.
Members of OccupyDePaul and
DePaul Anti-Capitalist Coalition held
a public forum on Friday, March 9 to
give voice to those who were excluded
from the administrative process, as
the tuition hikes were passed by the
school’s Board of Trustees last week
despite protest.
“Even as the decision has already
been made we think that it’s important
for the administration to understand
the extent to which the student body
radically disapproves of their decision,” said Ashley Bohrer, a DePaul
graduate student.
DePaul tuition will increase 2.5
percent for current undergraduate
students, a percentage DePaul says “is
less than the rate of inflation and one
of the lowest increases ever for these
students,” and 5.2 percent for new undergraduate students, which DePaul
says is a “rate that is on par or lower
than that of peer institutions.” But in
the last seven years, tuition rates at
DePaul have increased by 35 percent,
making education less accessible to
low-income students, said Bohrer.
“We are calling for the administra-
tion to question whether increasing
tuition again and again is really in line
with the idea of providing quality education to anyone who wants to seek it
out,” said Bohrer. “Our contention
is that in the current economy, what
they are doing is particularly locking
certain people out of the educational
system.”
In a statement DePaul said “the university strives to keep tuition affordable through its budgeting process and
by aggressively working to raise funds
for scholarships and other student
uses. In fact, raising money for scholarships is the top priority of DePaul’s
current fundraising campaign.”
Bohrer, along with members of OccupyDePaul and the DePaul Anti-Capitalist Coalition, hope that the public
forum will show the administration
how much the student body disapproves of its decision, will organize
and radicalize students to understand
the fight against tuition increases is
not over, and prevent further tuition
increases in the upcoming years.
“We hope that this will be a launching point for the campaign to have a
budget proposed and passed next year
that doesn’t include tuition increases and hopefully never again,” said
Bohrer.

Stating their own declarations as
“undocumented, unafraid, and unapologetic,” undocumented youth,
adults and their allies assembled at
Daley Plaza on Saturday, March 10 for
the National Coming Out of the Shadows Day rally, defying fear and calling
out for immigration reform.
“All my life I was told to hide my
status and be ashamed of myself,”
said Emmanuel Cordova, an undocumented UIC student. “But I will no
longer live in the shadows. I will continue to fight for my education, my
family and my community and for my
rights as a human being.”
Cordova, along with seven other
undocumented individuals took turns
telling their stories of their journey to
the United States, the realization of
being undocumented and the fear of
deportation.
“I’m a college graduate and I’ll be
getting my master’s soon but I can’t
get a job, I can’t even help my husband pay for groceries, for rent, for
gas, for other expenses,” said Fanny
Martinez, who is undocumented despite being married to an army soldier. “I feel helpless.”
In its third year, National Coming
Out of the Shadows Day allows those
who have lived silent and scared about
their status to come out and speak
publicly about being undocumented.
The goal, according to the Immigration Youth Justice League is to challenge immigration enforcement to
make a choice: take action and show
the world that the people they are deporting are students, workers, their
friends, classmates; or stay silent and
affirm their right to be undocumented
and unafraid.
“I am a good human being and I
am that person that like everyone else
here deserves to pursue his dreams,”
said Hugo Dominguez, a student
and resident of the Back of the Yards
neighborhood.

Afirmando sus propias declaraciones como “indocumentados, sin
miedo, sin complejos”, jóvenes y adultos indocumentados y sus aliados se
reunieron en la Plaza Daley el sábado
10 de marzo para la manifestación del
Día Nacional para Salir de las Sobras,
desafiando el miedo y pidiendo una
reforma inmigratoria.
“Toda mi vida me dijeron que escondiera mi estatus y que me avergonzara de mí mismo”, dijo Emmanuel
Córdova, estudiante indocumentado
de UIC. “Pero ya no tengo que vivir
en las sombras. Continuaré luchando
por mi educación, mi familia y mi comunidad y por mis derechos como ser
humano”.
Córdova, junto con otras siete personas indocumentadas se tomaron
turnos para contar sus historias de su
camino a los Estados Unidos, la realización de ser indocumentado y el
miedo a la deportación.
“Soy graduada de la universidad y
pronto estaré recibiendo mi maestría
pero no puedo conseguir un trabajo, ni

aquellos que han vivido en silencio
y con miedo sobre sus estatus salir y
hablar públicamente del ser indocumentados. El objetivo, según la Liga

retar a las autoridades de inmigración
para que tomen una decisión: ponerse
en acción y le muestren al mundo que
las personas a las que están deportando son estudiantes, trabajadores, sus

ser indocumentados y sin miedo”.

It may look like children in preschool are
just playing, but important learning is going on -- learning that is essential for success when formal schooling starts. That is
especially true for children who come from
low-income families.
Studies repeatedly have driven home
that point:
One study in the mid 1990s found that,
on average, a child from a low-income family heard 615 words per hour while children
from college educated parents heard 2,150.
The children whose parents talked to them
more developed bigger vocabularies and
were more able to think conceptually--a
skill that makes it easier to learn to read.
Preschool can help close this literacy gap.
A study of Illinois’ Preschool for All Program found that by kindergarten, children
who participated in the program, especially children from low-income homes and
were considered at risk for school failure,
showed significant improvements in language and skills, had fewer behavior problems and were better able to stay focused.
A 25-year long study of 1,400 3 and
4-year-old students in Chicago Child-Parent Education Centers found that these
students consistently had better educational, occupational and social outcomes
than students who already were in kindergarten, without benefit of preschool. This
was especially true for males and children
of high school dropouts. And the effects
were long lasting. By age 28, these onetime preschool students had higher educational levels and incomes and lower rates
of substance abuse and legal problems than
the kindergarten students.
A study called the Carolina Abecedarian Project monitored preschool children’s
progress over time with follow-up studies
conducted at ages 12, 15 and 21. It also
found long-lasting benefits associated with
early childhood programs. Children who
participated in the program had higher
cognitive tests from the toddler years to
age 21. Also, mothers whose children participated in the program, especially teen
mothers, achieved higher educational and
employment status than mothers whose
children were not in the program.
The HighScope Perry Preschool Study,
which followed at-risk, high-poverty African-American students, found that at age
40 these students had higher earnings,
were more likely to hold a job, had committed fewer crimes and were more likely
to have graduated from high school than
adults who did not have preschool.

Affixed in the center of Pilsen’s cultural vastness and minutes away from
the city’s colleges and universities, the
six story housing development of La
Casa, still in its construction stages,
hopes to provide Latino college students with an affordable place to live
and study when it opens in the fall.
“Many students from Pilsen, Little
Village or Back of the Yards live in
a small apartment, with one or two
bedrooms, sharing a room with their
sister or brother,” said Maria Bucio,
director of La Casa. “There’s no real
place for them to say this is my space,
this is where I’ll study, and this is
where I’ll put my laptop.”
The lack of space and inability to
afford living in university dorms contributes to the incompletion of a college education amongst Latinos and
low-income students, according to
Bucio.
“We’re losing a lot of [students] in
the transition from high school to college,” she said.
An example of that is the data gathered by the Illinois Policy Agenda. Out
of 100 students who enter 9th grade
only 20 graduate from college. Those
that do graduate, do so in 150 percent
of the program time, meaning if they
attend a four-year university, it takes
six years for them to complete it. The
numbers are worse if one looks at stu-
dents in Pilsen, Little Village and Back
of the Yards, said Bucio.
To combat this, The Resurrection
Project, the lead organization behind
La Casa, began developing a space to
provide students with the resources
to become successful and complete a
four-year college degree.
The housing development, located
on the corner of 18th Street and Paulina, can house 100 students and five
residential assistants, and includes a
fitness center, a laundry facility and
a resource center where students will
have access to tutors, computers and a
quiet place to study outside their dormitories.
“This is off-campus living with the
feel and resources that you might find
in an on-campus dorm,” said Bucio.
Undergraduate students looking
to live at La Casa will need to have
low- to moderate-income and either
be PELL eligible or meet the median
income of the area. Additionally, students must have the goal of completing a four-year degree, either through
attending a four-year university or
transitioning from a community college to a university.
“The idea is that if they are using
community college as a strategy to get
to that bachelor’s then so be it,” said
Bucio.
To keep rent affordable, currently
at $700 a month, Bucio compared
rent prices in Pilsen with the rent of
on-campus housing. Because La Casa
is a new housing development, Bucio
is still working on making the rent
part of universities’ housing plans.
She anticipates that most students
who decide to live at La Casa will use
private scholarships, work income or
loans to pay for the rent in the meantime.
With relatively lower rent prices,
Bucio hopes that La Casa will not
only provide a successful gateway
through college, but will also help
develop a college culture in the community.
“A lot of the times we talk about
creating a college culture in the
schools but I think what’s happening
here is that the community is saying
‘if you want to go to college, go to college,’” said Bucio. “That’s essentially
what we’re saying and you could
see it and it’s not hidden in a school
somewhere, it’s out in the community.”
La Casa is currently holding a
contest that will provide one student
with one year of free housing. To enter, students must create and submit

de construcción, espera brindar a los
estudiantes universitarios latinos un
lugar asequible para vivir y estudiar
cuando abra en el otoño.

On Monday, March 4, the styling chairs at Victor Mauricio Hair Salon were filled with eager
residents ready for a new look while their hair
was collected to create new hairpieces for cancer
survivors.
All afternoon a full crowd of children and
adults patiently waited to part ways with their
long hair for the sake of a good cause.
“I feel much better,” said Mayoree Elizalde, 10,
after cutting 32 inches off her hair.
Inspired by their paternal grandmother’s battle with breast cancer, Elizalde, along with her
younger sister Noelani, 5, got the idea to donate
their hair to Locks of Love, an organization that
provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged
children suffering from long-term medical hair
loss.
The two girls shared the idea with the Inspire
by L.O.V.E. youth leadership program at Nathan
Davis Elementary School, where together they
organized a hair styling event at Victor Mauricio Hair Salon, inviting community members to
donate their own hair for cancer patients across
the country.
“I’ve always wanted to donate [my hair] but I
never had the opportunity,” said Dora Hulihan,
a Brighton Park resident who heard about the
event through a promotional flyer. “I hope whoever gets it enjoys it. I’m happy to give it to them.”
The event was also a chance to provide free
haircuts to those whose hair measured longer
than 10 inches.
“I realized that a lot of people couldn’t afford
a haircut,” said Victor Mauricio, owner of Victor Mauricio Hair Salon. “So this event not only
helps giving hair to those people that need it but
it also helps people who can’t afford a haircut.”
The event helped gather over 40 hair donations, which will be weighed and shipped to
Locks of Love in Florida with the money raised
by the Inspire by L.O.V.E. youth leadership program.
“It was a great turnout,” said Beatrice Elizalde, the mother of Elizalde and Noelani, and the
founder of Inspire by L.O.V.E. “It made my girls
happy and I know it will make those who receive
the donations happy too.”
Among the attendees of the event were representatives of Special Service Area #39 and parents and families from Nathan Davis Elementary
Isaac Jones, president of the Vireya Nursery
School & Kindergarten Inc. in Englewood has
agreed to help by announcing this project to the
parents of his kids ages 8-13. A total of 10-15 kids
will be taught a curriculum designed by educators
from the University of Illinois Extension. This curriculum will focus on plant identification, pest control, vegetable selection and other age-appropriate
topics.
The hands-on portion for the kids will take place
at the 1901 W. 51st Street garden location twice a
week.
“Disadvantaged neighborhoods in Chicago are
plagued by a plethora of fast food while healthier
nutritious foods seem to be harder to find,” said
Akpan. “United Human Services Center has chosen
to continue producing garden-grown organic foods
and educating the local community on how to grow
healthy foods and also on the many health benefits
of eating differently.”

imagen mientras que su cabello estaba siendo
recolectado para crear nuevas piezas de cabello
para los sobrevivientes de cáncer.
Toda la tarde una multitud de niños y adultos
esperaban pacientemente para despedirse de
sus largas cabelleras en aras de una buena causa.
“Me siento mucho mejor”, dijo Mayoree
Elizalde, 10, después de haberse cortado 32 pulgadas de su cabello.
Inspirada por la batalla de su abuela paterna
con el cáncer de mama, Elizalde, junto con su
hermana menor Noelani, 5, tuvieron la idea de
donar sus cabelleras a Locks of Love, una organización que proporciona piezas de cabello
a niños en desventaja financiera que sufren de
pérdida de cabello a largo plazo por razones
médicas.
Las dos niñas compartieron la idea con el programa de liderazgo juvenil Inspire by L.O.V.E

Godwin Akpan and his organization, United Human Service Center (UHSC) are developing a
neighborhood project that will provide residents
with a choice of nutritious alternatives. The first
goal, according to the program’s objective, is to
educate local adults and youth on the benefits of
eating healthy foods. The second goal is to teach
various sustainable agricultural practices in conjunction with a hands-on experience for participants to put their education into practice.
The adult curriculum will cover topics that include proper soil selection, composting, vegetable
selection, organic fertilizers, constructing raised
beds, and other topics. The adults that will be selected to participate in the project will be UHSC
staff, UHSC volunteers, and community participants who are interested in urban agriculture.
There will be a minimum of 15 and a maximum
of 20 adults who will be a part of this project.
Classroom training will occur 1-2 times per week
at the UHSC headquarters or at the University of
Illinois Extension’s organic vegetable garden at the
Museum of Science and Industry. The hands-on
component for adults will occur 1-2 times per week
at the UHSC organic garden located at 1901 W. 51st
St. which is a one-eighth of an acre plot of land.
If space becomes an issue, the group will have another one-eighth of an acre plot of land at 1211 W.

de Illinois en el Museo de Ciencias e Industria. El
componente de práctica para los adultos ocurrirá

parcela de un octavo de acre. Si el espacio se convirtiera en un problema, el grupo tendrá otra parcela de un octavo de acre en el 1211 Oeste Calle 51.

de Niños Vivera en Englewood ha acordado ayudar
anunciando este proyecto a los padres de sus niños
de las edades de 8 a 13 años. A un total de 10 a 15
niños se les enseñará un plan de estudios diseñado
por educadores de la Extensión de la Universidad
de Illinois. Este plan de estudios se enfocará en la
identificación de plantas, el control de plagas, la
selección de vegetales y otros temas de acuerdo a
su edad.
La porción de práctica para los niños se llevará a
cabo en el jardín del 1901 Oeste Calle 51 dos veces
por semana.
“Los vecindarios en desventaja de Chicago se ven
afectados por una gran cantidad de comida rápida
mientras que los alimentos nutritivos y saludables
parecen ser difíciles de encontrar”, dijo Akpan. “El

New Exhibit Celebrates the
Meaning of Being a Woman

“Voces de Mujeres III” is the new exhibit at Carlos and Dominguez Fine Arts Gallery located on 1538 W. Cullerton in Pilsen.

Using various textures and contexts, Violeta Rendon’s
paintings usher a sense of femininity and strength, interlacing the female body with distinct yet subtle animal characteristics. Her intrepid use of animal and human qualities,
backdropped by vibrant images of nature, give way to eloquent depictions of what it means to be a woman.
But it’s not only Rendon’s work that outlines the meaning
of being a female. Opened on Friday, March 9 in celebration
of Women’s Month, Voces de Mujeres III, an art exhibit at
Carlos and Dominguez Fine Arts Gallery, brings together the
perspectives of seven Latina artists, Rendon included.
“Artists are some of the most sensitive people,” said Len
Dominguez, director at Carlos and Dominguez Fine Arts
Gallery. “It was just logical to bring these artists together
and look at their different perceptions of being a woman.”
Every year, Dominguez and his wife, Patricia Carlos,
organize an exhibit, a theatre performance or a series of
monologues to celebrate Women’s Month. This year was no
different; as they brought together women whom they believed showed “the passion, the playfulness and the power of
women everywhere.”
Among those artists is Alma Dominguez, a Mexican
painter who uses self-portraiture as a means for social expression. Incorporating a collage of newspaper clippings
along a painted hair strand or broche, she playfully works
with newspaper headlines to make phrases like “Poder Mexicano,” and “No a la Rutina.”
“Despite every artist having a different vision, it all came
together really well,” said Dominguez. “We’re familiar with
all of the artists and felt they all complemented each other in
some way or form.”
The sentiment seems to be uniform, as those who attended Friday’s exhibit opening lingered at each painting and
sculpture, captivated by the essence of each artists’ message.
The exhibit will run through April 6 and features artwork
from artists Violeta Rendon, Alma Dominguez, Nicole Marroquin, Nora Mendoza, Dolores Mercado, Particia Peixoto
and Carolina Reyes. Showings are by appointment only, for

Significado de Ser Mujer

Utilizando varias texturas y contextos, las pinturas de
Violeta Rendón manejan una sensación de feminidad
entrelazando el cuerpo femenino con distintas y a la vez
sutiles características animales. Su intrépido uso de cualidades animales y humanas, con el fondo de vibrantes
imágenes de la naturaleza, dan paso a descripciones elocuentes de lo que significa ser mujer.
Pero no sólo es el trabajo de Rendón lo que señala el
significado de ser mujer. Inaugurada el viernes 9 de marzo
para celebrar el Mes de la Mujer, Voces de Mujeres III,
una exhibición de arte en la Galería de Bellas Artes Carlos
y Domínguez, logra reunir las perspectivas de siete artistas latinas, incluyendo a Rendón.
“Los artistas son unas de las personas más sensibles”,
dijo Len Domínguez, director de la Galería de Bellas Artes
Carlos y Domínguez. “Era sólo lógico unir a estas artistas
y mirar a sus diferentes percepciones de ser una mujer”.
Cada año, Domínguez y su esposa, Patricia Carlos, organizan una exhibición, una presentación teatral o una
serie de monólogos para celebrar el Día de la Mujer. Este
año no fue la excepción; ya que unieron a mujeres quienes
creyeron mostraban “la pasión, la alegría y el poder de las
mujeres de todas partes”.
Entre esas artistas está Alma Domínguez, una pintora
mexicana que utiliza el autorretrato como medio de expresión social. Incorporando un collage de recortes de
periódico junto a un mechón de cabello o broche, juguetonamente trabaja con los encabezados de los periódicos
para formar frases como “Poder Mexicano” y “No a la Rutina”.
“A pesar de que cada artista tiene una diferente visión
todo se incorporó bastante bien”, dijo Domínguez. “Estamos familiarizados con todos los artistas y sentimos que
se complementaron entre sí de alguna manera o forma”.
El sentimiento parece ser uniforme, ya que aquellos que
asistieron a la inauguración de la exhibición el viernes se
entretuvieron con cada pintura y escultura, captivada por
la esencia del mensaje de cada artista.
La exhibición estará en puesta hasta el 6 de abril y
cuenta con obras de las artistas Violeta Rendón, Alma
Domínguez, Nicole Marroquín, Nora Mendoza, Dolores
Mercado, Patricia Peixoto y Carolina Reyes. La exhibición

Canteca De Macao at Double Door

Celebrating the release of their new
album “Nunca es Tarde,” Spain’s ninemember ensemble, Canteca de Macao,
brought their wide-range of flamenco,
jazz, reggae and rock to the Double
Door on Monday, March 12.
Equipped with the vocals of frontwoman Ana Saboya, the band elated
fans with their sultry-like brashness.
Their distinct and immeasurable style
took fans through their eclectic musical numbers, performing songs not
only from their new album but some
of their greatest hits as well.
The ensemble, based in Madrid,
was in town as part of Chicago’s Flamenco Festival. Having performed to
a full house last year at Green Dolphin, the half-packed venue for this
year’s concert didn’t do justice to their
talent. Whether it was because of the
size of the venue or because it was a
Monday night, the lack of attendees
was surprising. Nevertheless, the halffilled room lent to a more personal experience, as it was easy to get up close
and feel as you were jamming on stage
with the band.
But it wasn’t only Saboya’s powerful and dramatic voice that had fans
rejoicing. The percussion accompaniment, which included a cajon, timbales and congas, along with a flute
and a juggler, brought everyone to a
musical peak, evident by the jumping,
dancing and waving from those in and
around the stage.
Parallel to Canteca de Macao’s mu-
sical style, the band El Payo opened
the show. The Chicago-based band is
popular for their rumba and nuevo flamenco music, infused with rock, salsa,
ska, reggae and undertones of flamenco. The members, who hail from
Ecuador, Venezuela, Argentina and
the United States, did a great job of
warming up the crowd, as their music
became a teaser of what was to come
next.
Overall, the night was filled with
a gypsy-like feel, as the energy of the
crowd reflected that of Canteca de Macao. Their invariably unique orchestral style was contagious, and if you
weren’t a fan walking in, you were sure
to be by the end.

nuevo álbum “Nunca es Tarde”, el
grupo de nueve integrantes, Canteca
de Macao, trajo su amplia gama de
flamenco, jazz, reggae y rock al Double
Door el lunes 12 de marzo.
Equipados con la voz de la intérprete Ana Saboya, la banda puso
eufóricos a los fanáticos con su sensula
insolencia. Su distinto e inmedible estilo llevó a los fanáticos por sus eclécti-
cos números musicales, interpretando
canciones no sólo de su álbum pero

With the IHSA State Basketball Playoffs underway, local high school players’ talents look promising

It’s mid March and the Madness is in full swing. But it’s not only college
basketball teams that are participating in the madness, locally, the Boy’s
High School Basketball playoffs have begun. Varsity basketball teams from
across the state of Illinois are battling it out to be named the 2011-2012
IHSA State Basketball Champions. Some of the most talented basketball
players in the nation are playing in our own backyard, literally.
WHITNEY YOUNG
Thomas Hamilton Jr. – a junior, power forward for the Dolphins
is the No. 42 player in the nation for the Class of 2013. Hamilton is a 6’8”
forward that moves well without the basketball in his hands, he constantly
slashes to the basket on offense while remaining a standout defensive player. Although he still has one remaining year in his high school career, the
University of Illinois is watching Hamilton closely.
Jahlil Okafor – The No. 2 sophomore in the nation, Okafor is a
highly touted recruit and has been since his freshman year at Young. Standing at 6’9”, 270 pounds, Okafor has tremendous footwork for a center and
plays his best in the paint and near the basket. Georgetown, Duke, North
Carolina and Ohio State all have Okafor on their radar and hope his skills
progress as he hopes to bring a state title back to Whitney Young.
Paul White – The No. 19 sophomore in the nation has great size for
the small forward position. Being 6’8” and having the ability to score, rebound and defend sure makes Whitney Young’s chances in the IHSA playoffs much better.
Although Young was ousted in the Class 4A Sectional playoff game
against the No. 1 ranked team in the state, Simeon, they looked poised to
make long runs toward a state championship for the next couple of years.
CURIE
Cliff Alexander – Alexander, the No. 11 sophomore in the nation is
a 6’9” center with plenty of upside. Leading his Curie team, Alexander is a
defensive specialist that comes up with big blocks and rebounds each time
he hits the hardwood. Indiana and Florida State are a couple of schools that
are looking to lock up Alexander’s talent once he graduates.
SIMEON
Steve Taylor – The No. 86 player in the nation just signed to play
small forward next year at Marquette University. Taylor has a well developed outside game, his jump shot has improved steadily and can be quite
crafty when he puts the ball on the floor. Taylor already has one state title
under his belt and looking like he’ll add another this year.
Jabari Parker – The No. 1 junior in the nation is the talk of the
town. Parker is the best small forward in the nation and he sure does look
like it each time he laces up his Nikes. He does it all, he shoots the ball at a
high percentage; he gets to the basket with ease and creates offense when
needed. Parker is a flat out baller. It’s no surprise he is leading Simeon to
another state title with wins over Whitney Young and Marist in the Class 4A
sectional playoffs. Simeon and Parker are seemingly Peoria bound for the
second straight year.
While Parker and Simeon will make noise again during next year’s playoffs, Parker will have to keep his focus as he has already received numerous
offers from universities across the country. John Calipari at Kentucky, Roy
Williams at North Carolina and Mike Krzyzewski at Duke are all chomping
at the bit to recruit Parker. However, each might have to battle his current
coach, Robert Smith once Parker graduates next year.
With the current vacancy down in Champaign, Ill. the Illini men’s head
coaching gig looks very enticing to Smith. You better believe he will do everything possible to bring the No. 1 player in the nation to suit up in the
orange and blue.

Talento Cosechado en Casa
Con la postemporada del Basquetbol Estatal de la IHSA en marcha, los talentos
de los jugadores locales de secundaria se ven prometedores

Estamos a mediados de marzo y la Locura está en pleno
apogeo. Pero no sólo los equipos de basquetbol universitario
están participando en la locura, localmente la postemporada
de la Liga Varonil de Basquetbol a nivel secundaria ha comenzado. Los mejores equipos de todo el estado de Illinois están
luchando para ser nombrados Campeones Estatales 20112012 de la IHSA. Algunos de los más talentosos jugadores del
país están jugando en nuestro propio jardín, literalmente.
WHITNEY YOUNG
Thomas Hamilton Jr. – Tercer año, delantero principal de los Dolphins, ocupa la posición número 42 del país
en la generación 2013. Hamilton un delantero de 6’8” que
se mueve bien sin la bola en sus manos, constantemente se
dirige a la canasta en ofensa mientras se mantiene como destacado jugador ofensivo. Aunque todavía le queda un año
por terminar en su carrera de secundaria, la Universidad de
Illinois está observando a Hamilton muy de cerca.
Jahlil Okafor – Estudiante de segundo año que

de estatura, y 270 libras, Okafor tiene un tremendo juego de

CURIE
Cliff Alexander – Alexander el estudiante de segundo año que ocupa la posición número 11 del país es un centro
de 6’9” con bastante ventaja. Encabezando a su equipo de
Curie, Alexander es un especialista de defensa que viene con
grandes bloqueos y rebotes cada vez que toca el piso. Indiana
y Florida State son un par de escuelas que buscan conseguir
el talento de Alexander una vez que se gradúe.
SIMEON
Steve Taylor – El jugador que ocupa el puesto número 86 del país acaba de firmar contrato para jugar como delantero el próximo año en la Universidad Marquette. Taylor
tiene un juego externo muy bien desarrollado, su tiro de salto
ha mejorado de manera constante y puede ser muy hábil cuando pone el balón en el piso. Taylor ya tiene un título estatal
y parece que conseguirá otro este año.
Jabari Parker – El estudiante de tercer año que
ocupa el primer lugar en el país está en boca de todos. Parker
es el mejor delantero suplente del país y sí lo parece cada vez
que se amarra las agujetas de sus zapatos. Él hace de todo,
tira la bola con un alto porcentaje; la pone en la canasta con
facilidad y crea ofensa cuando es necesario. Parker es una
máquina con el balón. No es sorprendente que esté llevando
a Simeon a otro título estatal con victorias sobre Whitney
Young y Martist en la Clase 4A de la postemporada seccional.
Simeon y Parker aparentemente van en camino hacia Peoria
por segundo año consecutivo.
Mientras que Parker y Simeon volverán a hacer ruido durante la postemporada del próximo año, Jabari tendrá que
mantener su enfoque ya que ha recibido numerosas ofertas
